Review of Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2 CPU Cooler

INTRODUCTION

Arctic Cooling is one of the most well-known manufacturers in the PC hardware industry, especially when it comes to smart cooling solutions. The company also manufactures power supplies and computer cases. The Swiss brand may be best known for VGA coolers; “Accelero Xtreme” and “Accelero Twin Turbo” which are available for more or less all mid to high end graphics cards on the market.

Today I’m going to take a closer look at Arctic Cooling’s overhauled CPU cooler released in a secondary revision, the “Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2”. This cooler excels in two ways; first: it’s really cheap and second: it’s compatible with a really long list of platforms including the latest Intel and AMD sockets.

Here are the specifications of the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2:

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

“Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2” comes in a 100% transparent plastic box that allows you to see all the details of the cooler. Included accessories are: a printed manual and two different bracket and screw setups for installing AMD or Intel systems No separate tube of thermal paste is included, instead it has been pre-applied to the copper base of the heatsink. The thermal grease used is Arctic Cooling MX-2.

DETAILS: 7 ARCTIC COOLING FREEZERS FOR REV.2

Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2 is a tower cooler of relatively small dimensions. It is one of the few CPU coolers compatible with Intel’s new 1366 and 1156 sockets. The heatsink is made of 42 aluminum plates and the base is made of pure copper, as well as the three heatpipes.

In the following pictures you can see how the three heatpipes go from the base to the top of the cooler.

The 92mm fan is pre-mounted with Arctic Cooling, but it’s easy to remove for those of us who are interested.

The fan rotation speed is from 900 to 2500 rpm. It has a 4-pin PWM connector, which is great because it allows us to control the speed of rotation in software, or alternatively, the speed can be automatically controlled by the system, adapting the speed to the overall needs of the system.

The base is made of copper and comes with a pre-applied layer of Arctic Cooling MX-2 thermal paste. As you can see in the pictures below, I removed it to check the surface of the motherboard. Although the foundation does not have a mirror effect, the shine is still quite good, much better than its closest competitors.

INSTALLATION AND TESTS 7 ARCTIC COOLING FREEZER FOR REV.2

I ran this test on an Intel system. The anchoring system couldn’t be simpler, but I’m more of a fan of using the back plate along with the classic screws as I feel it gives me a better feel for how tightly the cooler is attached.

To put some pressure on the cooler, I overclocked the E6400 CPU to 3.0 GHz (375 MHz x8) and to 2.66 GHz (333 MHz x8), bringing its voltage up to 1.4 V. Here are the components in the test Settings:

Testing device

Processor – Intel Core 2 Duo E6400, 2.13 GHz

Cooler – Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2

Motherboard – DFI Lanparty JR P45 T2RS

Graphics card – nVIDIA GeForce 8800 320 GTS Mb

Hard drive – Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500 GB

Memory – Kingston 800 HyperX DDR2 2×1 GB (4-4-4-12)

Power – Tacens Missile Exchange II 600

I used OCCT 3.0.1 software to max out my system in 20 minutes. I measured the temperature before and at the end of this stress test. The room temperature was around 15 ËsC and the fan was PWN controlled during the test, i.e. the fan rotation speed was controlled by the system and adapted to the system load.

Here are the test results:

As you can see from the graphs, the performance of the cooler is quite good. I don’t expect to find a cooler on the market with a better performance/price ratio.

I wouldn’t recommend using this cooler for extreme overclocking, but it handles moderate overclocking very well.

I was impressed with the low noise generated by the fan even at higher RPMs.

CONCLUSIONS

You would normally expect that if a product has a higher price, either the performance or the quality is higher. Arctic Cooling tries to tell us something different with the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2. The Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Rev.2 proves to be a great cooler with a spectacular finish and performance that surpasses many of its competitors.

Anyone looking to replace a stock Intel cooler with something else would do well to check out this cooler. Not only does it offer great performance, but what’s really remarkable about it is the price point around $30 (€18).
