Purina Pet Health Insurance Review
In 2008, the 85-year-old Purina PetCare Company launched PurinaCare Pet Health Insurance. This insurance company offers PurinaCare Without and PurinaCare With Preventative Care plans for cats and dogs as young as 8 weeks old.
PurinaCare Without Preventative Care is their basic pet insurance plan that covers the costs of injuries and illnesses related to diagnostic procedures, prescriptions, surgeries, hospital stays and treatments. This also includes hereditary and breed-specific diseases. Depending on the location, age, type and condition of your pet, monthly costs start at $22 per dog but can go up to $90. You can adjust your deductible from $100, $250, $500 or $1,000 per year, but this will affect your premiums. 80% of approved expenses are reimbursed after your annual deductible is met; your deductible is calculated annually and not per incident, and your annual benefit limit is $20,000 per animal. Important note: Your premium increases when your pet reaches 5, 8 and 10 years of age.
In addition to what is included in PurinaCare’s Basic Plan, with Preventive Care, your dog or cat is also covered for wellness and routine procedures such as: annual exams, flea and heartworm prescriptions, vaccinations, spay/neuter and more. Like the basic plan, PurinaCare With Preventative Care can start at $28 per pet, but can go up to $100.00, so there is definitely a wide range between monthly costs. Other costs remain exactly the same as a PurinaCare plan without preventive care, but keep in mind that even after the annual deductible is met, some wellness/routine procedures may still be costly, meaning you still have to pay out-of-pocket after the deductible is met:
- Dental Scales/Polishing: $200
- Vaccines for dogs and cats under 9 months: $250
- Neutering of dogs: $150
There are several discounts available – If you insure 2 pets on the same plan, you get a 5% discount; if you insure 3 or more pets on the same plan, you get a 10% discount.
As for exceptions, there are quite a few, but here is just an example:
- Any pre-existing condition
- Costs associated with breeding and pregnancy
- Alternative care such as: rehabilitation, acupuncture, holistic/homeopathic treatment, chiropractic treatment, etc.
- Optional procedures such as tail docking, declawing and ear docking
- All dietary supplements, vitamins, natural remedies
- Diseases that can be prevented by vaccination
- Intentional accidents or injuries by the policyholder
- Dogs and cats up to 8 weeks of age
- Accidents that occur before 00:01 on the third day after the insurance effective date
- Illnesses that appear before 00:01 on the 15th day after the effective date of the insurance
PURINACARE PET HEALTH INSURANCE: PROS
- If no claims have been made, you can receive a full refund of your premium within 14 days of registration
- There is no waiting period for preventive care benefits only; coverage begins at 12:01 a.m. the day after your policy becomes effective
- Hereditary and breed-specific diseases are covered, but ONLY if manifested after registration; if your pet has had hereditary and breed-specific conditions prior to insurance, this is considered “pre-existing” and not covered
- You can choose any licensed veterinarian in the US
- You choose the participation yourself
PURINACARE PET HEALTH INSURANCE: INCL
- All preventable conditions are excluded, but like many other pet insurance companies, these specific conditions are not detailed, so there is a lot of room for interpretation. That’s the top complaint among PurinaCare customers — their claims were denied due to inconsistent interpretation
- The following states are not covered: Alaska, District of Columbia, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, Montana, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Washington
- Only dogs and cats are covered
