The Top 3 Must-Do’s In Nassau, Bahamas
I first visited Nassau when I was just 15 years old and immediately fell in love with this Caribbean paradise. It’s just a short cruise or flight from the eastern US and can be very affordable. Nassau is also largely wheelchair accessible and the people of Nassau are always willing to help in any way they can. My incredible first visit at age 15 inspired two more trips, one just last year. During these three trips to Nassau, Bahamas, I explored almost everything the island has to offer and discovered the best things to do in Nassau. Here are my three must-do’s while in unspoiled paradise in the Bahamas:
1) Atlantis Resort
The beautiful Atlantis Resort is located on Paradise Island, Atlantis’ private island, just a fifteen-minute drive from Nassau Cruise Port. Finding an accessible taxi to get to Atlantis was never a problem for me as there was always an accessible van available and I never pre-booked the service. Once you get to Atlantis, you are in for a truly amazing experience. When pulled in, there is a huge water fountain composed of golden horses that immediately exude elegance. You will then enter the lobby and begin your Atlantis experience. Atlantis is free to visit, but many areas are reserved exclusively for resort guests. However, you can purchase an all-day pass that gives you access to the beaches and Aquaventure, Atlantis’ very own water park with slides, pools and rapids. A day pass is quite expensive and can be up to $135 USD per adult during high season. While the water park is not very wheelchair friendly, admissions also include access to the Aquarium and Dig, both of which are accessible. If this is your first time in Atlantis, then I would suggest going out and seeing everything. There is also a large casino with lots of slot machines and table games that are available to all, regardless of whether you are staying at the resort or not. However, I always spend too much time and money at the casino, probably because they give out free cocktails while you play – a definite way to keep me from leaving the casino. The resort is also home to many high-end boutiques, as well as gift shops and restaurants. Plan to spend at least a few hours at Atlantis, and more if you get a day pass. You’ll be planning your next trip to Atlantis before you leave because it’s so fantastic, I guarantee it.
2) Straw market
Although navigating the narrow lanes of the Straw Market can be extremely challenging in a wheelchair, I always make sure to visit. You can walk here from the cruise port, so it’s always full of tourists, but strangely, it’s also full of locals. The local Bahamian people who work the straw market are always in a cheerful mood as they try to sell their wares. Many of them have been selling on the Straw Market all their lives. I once met an elderly lady who had worked there for over sixty years and was still smiling as she told me about her life experiences at the market. If you’re looking for souvenirs, the Straw Market has everything you could wish for: t-shirts, toys and wallets to name a few. However, the most amazing and unique items are the handmade straw purses and fans that the vendors make themselves. They’ll even offer to engrave them (in a straw color of your choice) for free. Everything here is also relatively cheap, but always be sure to negotiate. I asked how much the item was before and they said $20 but after negotiating I got it for half price. The Straw Market is a unique experience not to be missed in Nassau.
3) Señor Frog’s
This is one of my favorite restaurants and probably one of my favorite places in the world, period. It’s an outdoor restaurant, bar and gift shop located right on the crystal clear water and within walking distance of the cruise ship port. Señor Frog’s is always “crunk” for lack of a better word. During the day, it’s a little more family-friendly, with staff making balloon animals and balloon hats for everyone at your own table. At night it becomes a club. There is a DJ and various contests and games where you can win free shots. The whole environment is wildly fun and they have good food in addition to a huge selection of great drinks. The chicken nachos are amazing and the Bahama Mama (drink) to wash it down is perfection. Señor Frog’s is the most fun you can have in paradise!
