Scientific Wrestling – A New Dawn For an Old Style

The golden age of pro wrestling is often considered to be the Frank Gotch era, however the golden age in terms of “technical” wrestling came after that.

During the early 1900s, specifically the teenage to late 1920s, many of the top pros began to excel using their feet on the mat. These shooters were able to use their legs as another set of arms and were experts at controlling their opponents’ legs and arms. These talented grapplers were commonly called “legs” by wrestlers, and leg wrestling became part of the catch-and-catch trade of the old masters. Famous names included Joe Stecher, Earl Caddock, “Tigerman” John Pesek, George Tragos, Ad Santel and Clarence Eklund.

These men combined brutal submissions (double wrists, neck cranks and leg holds) with the ability to twist their opponents into pretzels. It is not surprising that it was at this time that the term “stretch it” was coined. The basic drive used by the old leg wrestler was the crossbody drive (commonly called the “single leg grapevine”). It was from there that they maneuvered their opponents into various positions where the human body was not supposed to.

They used a guillotine (abdominal stretch), banana split, crossfaces and reverse crossfaces off crossbody drives, inside holds, crossface headscissors (commonly called “back mount”). They were also adept at cutting arms with their feet and using various nelson holds and stretches of both arms to bring their opponents to the point where they felt as if their muscles were actually tearing.

Arguably the greatest of the old leg wrestlers, pound for pound, was Clarence Eklund. Known as wrestling’s octopus, Eklund proved to be one of the most technical grapplers in wrestling’s late shooting days. Roaming all over the United States, Eklund has developed his leg wrestling style into a plane of his own. Sports writer Bill Sopris had this to say about the Octopus: “(Ek had) a knack for using vines and blocking his opponent’s progress with his legs, and his strong point was his legs, and with this uncanny strength he was able to break levers and wear down a man, eventually beating him in half with scissors and arm bars.”

Eklund weighed 175 pounds. and from 1916 won the light heavyweight world title. He cemented his claim at the age of 42 by defeating the best light heavyweight wrestlers in the world to win the undisputed world title at the Australian tournament in 1928. Among those he defeated were Clete Kauffman, the infamous Ad Santel and Ted Thye. The story of Eklund dominating Ad Santel in their tournament shootout became the stuff of legend and cemented Eklund’s claim that no man in the world could match him at 175 pounds.

I spoke with Dick Cardinal, one of the last old shooters and a master hooker, about Eklund. Dick knew Ted Thye (one of Eklund’s opponents in the 1928 tournament). Thye remarked to Dick that Eklund’s performance against Santel was pure wrestling mastery. Thye’s words about the event were awe-inspiring in themselves, according to Dick, and Eklund dominated his foe in every phase of the game.

Another story that has become legendary is Eklund’s visit a few years after retirement to practice in Oklahoma with that year’s NCAA national championship wrestling team (Oklahoma A & M). The coach invited Eklund down to check on the team’s progress.

Eklund walked and nodded when he saw something he liked. After a while, the coach asked him if he would like to practice. “Sure,” Eklund said, “Line them up. The trainer was impressed by this, as he was only suggesting Eklund train with one of his lighter wrestlers; after all, Eklund was in his mid-40s and had been retired for years. Still, he did as Eklund asked.

Within 15 minutes, 45-year-old Clarence Eklund had pinned every member of the national championship team, from lightest to heaviest. Heavyweight lasts the longest, taking Eklund around 2 minutes to pin. Now imagine a wrestler walking in today and pinning every member of the Oklahoma, Iowa or Minnesota State wrestling team and you begin to get an idea of the technical mastery of the wrestling octopus. Eklund was the king of the science match.

I have long worried that the technical style of the old wrestlers has been forgotten over the years as professional shooting really died out in the professional ranks after the late 1920s. Then I came across something that almost made me cry with joy. I came across an instructional video called “LEGAL BAIN” by one of the greatest wrestlers of all time – Wade Schalles.

Wade Schalles’ riding/pinning style is the closest I’ve ever seen to Old Time Leg Wrestlers. Wade is a four-time NCAA champion and has won more world and national championships than any man in history. I have seen very few current amateur wrestlers that have the technical prowess of the old timers, but Schalles takes footwork, wobbles and pinning to a new level.

It’s a Schalles style match where you can see the bridge between the Old and the New. Watching Wade’s material makes it very easy for me to imagine what men like Eklund, John Pesek and Earl Caddock must have looked like on the mat. Everything is there: leverage, fulcrum, speed, technique and above all AGRESE.

If you were to add leg holds, neck cranks, and double wrists to the material that Wade presents and master it thoroughly, you’d be a very dangerous person in very little time, and that’s no joke. I give this stuff 5 stars, but I’d like to give it a 10 (it’s that good). It is, quite simply, the best leg and peg riding material I have ever seen.
