Imagination Land

Land of imagination

For any South Park fan, the title of this story is a reminder of the wonderful episode of the trilogy created by Matt Stone and Trey Parker. Quick recap for anyone who missed this episode, the infamous Eric Cartman and Kyle Broflovski make a bet that Cartman can prove that goblins are real. Cartman manages to prove Kyle wrong, and at the same time terrorists have taken over the human imagination and the imagination is in full swing. Like most episodes of South Park there is always a message, the message is this: “Who are we to judge what is real or not?” Characters like “Popeye” are fictional, but we learn a lot from them, sometimes much more than from real people. I don’t think eating spinach would be in my life if it wasn’t for Popeye. For those unfamiliar with Popeye, the character has always gained incredible strength to defeat his enemy and save a girl by eating a can of spinach. As a child I was amazed by this cartoon and today I can honestly say “Thank you Peppa” for helping me eat spinach! Today it is one of my favorite meals. As a cartoon junkie, I started thinking about the different characters I’ve watched over the years and how each of them taught me something really valuable. So I decided to share part of my journey of learning “Imagination” by introducing some “fictional” characters from a different perspective. Not tight costumes and superpowers, but more how their struggles were more real than ever and how they dealt with challenges and lessons learned. I’ll pick some of my favorites to show you. “Spiderman and Batman” are the ones I will cover.

Chapter 1

The Amazing Spider-Man

Truly, “The Amazing Spiderman” not only because he can walk on walls and shoot webs, but because he always finds a way to stay on top of everything he faces. For people unfamiliar with the character created by the coolest person alive, Stan “the Man” Lee, here’s a quick recap. Peter Parker is a teenage scientific genius who faces normal teenage problems like getting the girl he wants and getting caught by a bully. After being bitten by a radioactive spider, he transformed into “The Amazing Spiderman”. He has gained super human strength, “amazing” agility, the ability to cling, and a spider-sense that warns him when danger is approaching. But Peter’s secret weapon has always been his intellect.

Peter decided to lead the life of a superhero after the death of his uncle Ben, who taught him that “with great power comes great responsibility”. His life was torn in half as he had to maintain his high school life while maintaining his secret identity. The lesson that Uncle Ben taught Peter is the hidden message of almost every Spiderman story. The power of being an extremely intelligent student and the responsibility to use that blessing to enrich your life and the lives of others. The power of being able to pick up a car and throw it 10 meters and the responsibility of saving the world from the villains who are constantly trying to destroy it. So what can we learn from our web-headed friend? Honestly, this character is an encyclopedia of lessons, but I’m going to pick my favorite Spiderman lesson “Perseverance”. You can see how this character struggles every day from trying to keep up her grades, to working a part-time job, shooting for the newspaper, to taking care of Aunt May and saving the world. A measure of responsibility and persistence is a lesson that everyone should follow. Never give up even if you’re trying to save the world; or if you can’t start working out because you’re lazy or can’t afford the house you want, never give up. Plan, strategize and fight to reach your goal. “Your dreams are your responsibility, channel the power of your mind to make those dreams come true”… From your friendly neighborhood Spiderman.

Chapter 2

Batman

I think everyone is familiar with the character “Sherlock Holmes”, a fictional detective created by author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in 1887. The character used logical reasoning and forensic science to solve difficult cases. Batman is an improved Sherlock Holmes in the comic book world created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger. He is the number one detective in the entire universe, armed with endless gadgets (designed by him), a black belt in almost every martial art, and a monopoly of almost every single industrial sector in Gotham City and parts of the world. … Not to mention he’s also loved by the ladies like Bruce Wayne. So generally he’s the guy almost every kid wants to be because he’s the easiest to achieve his status (in theory). I won’t go into detail and briefly describe the story of the Dark Knight because I think everyone knows him, but the origin of this character teaches us one of the most valuable lessons in life. “You have to face your fears in order to overcome them.” . Bruce Wayne’s life was destroyed when his parents were shot in the alley and he fell into a cave full of bats at home, causing him to suffer from “chiroptophobia” (fear of bats). After a journey of self-discovery and martial arts training, he returns to fulfill his duty as Gotham City’s hero, but first he must overcome his own fear to become a symbol of terror in the hearts of his enemies… BATMAN!. Some of my personal favorite Batman traits are his “attention to detail and strategic thinking. This is one of my favorite practices of the world’s best detective and a very useful habit that will come in handy when embarking on any new experience or solving puzzles created by the devious “The Riddler”? So, take your time, analyze the problem from every single aspect, do your research, consider the options, perform the required tests and formulate the result.

Finally, after revealing Batman and Spiderman from a different perspective, I’ll leave you with a word from Kyle Broflovski in the same episode of South Park that started it all: “It’s all real. Think about it. live more than most real people in this room? I mean, whether Jesus is real or not, he had a bigger impact on the world than any of us. And the same can be said for Bugs Bunny and Superman and Harry Potter. Changed my life, changed the way I act on Earth. Doesn’t that make them a little bit real? They may be imaginary, but they are more important than most of us here. And they’ll all be around long after we’re dead. So in a way, these things are more real than any of us.”
