The Lost Library of Hernando Columbus
Everyone has heard of Christopher Columbus – the famous “admiral” who came across some islands while sailing west from Europe to find a new route to the Orient. He didn’t realize that there was a continent blocking the way to his destination. Over the decades, this uncharted land developed into a lucrative transatlantic empire for Spain. Columbus had two sons. Hernando was the only illegitimate son of Christopher Columbus; Diego Columbus was the legitimate son of an explorer. While Diego continued his father’s legacy as governor and admiral of the Indies, Hernando decided to become a scholar by building the largest collection of printed books in existence.
University of Cambridge literature professor Edward Wilson-Lee recently published “The Catalog of Shipwrecked Books” (2019), the only book detailing the life of Columbus’s second son Hernando and his incredible obsession with books. Just as his father explored the lands for gold and Christian converts, Hernando explored the bookstore for all the printed books and maps he could find. His goal was to create a universal library of books that could be shared with Spaniards seeking information on all subjects in the world. Hernando’s huge ambitions would turn his great library into the first “database” of information. He kept track of these books by traveling frequently to visit most of the bookstores in at least fifteen major European cities and buy every new book that was recently printed. By the end of his life in 1539, he had acquired over 15,000 to 20,000 volumes.
Hernando was born in 1488, which is significant given that the printing press had been invented forty years earlier and was first used to print manuscripts into books. He began collecting in 1509 until his death in 1539, putting pressure on him to collect all printed books in the last sixty to eighty years after Gutenberg invented the printing press.
Hernando wanted to build his library with all known printed books because he wanted to catalog all human knowledge in every language and every subject. He couldn’t do this monstrous job himself, but he paid an army of readers to summarize every book he owned. In early 2019, a thick 2,000-page tome titled “El Libro de los Epitomes” or “The Book of Epitomes” was discovered in Scandinavia, missing for three hundred and fifty years. She summarized the contents of many books and arranged them in a kind of systematic structure. Lee believes that many of the books summarized in this collection no longer exist. Fortunately, however, it shows what Europeans were reading more than five hundred years ago (“Typeroom” website, August 2, 2019).
The second son of Christopher Columbus is an underrated historical figure who himself bought almost every printed book since the invention of the printing press in 1450, from 1509 until his death in 1539. Although little was known about Hernando until Professor Edward Wilson-Lee shed light. about the book collector’s life in his recent biography, “The Catalog of Shipwrecked Books.” He acknowledges that Hernando created the original database “search engine” summarizing many of his books. According to the author, Hernando “gathered everything he could lay his hands on. Manuscripts, pamphlets, posters in pubs—it all ended up in his library.” (“Guardian”).
After nearly thirty years of wandering the streets of Europe, exploring bookstores and buying everything he didn’t buy, Hernando died and so did his books. Today, since 1552, only one quarter of his collection has been stored in the Cathedral of Seville, Spain. Many were either stolen and others were damaged by floods. Still, that many books is a huge amount, even in today’s volume in an average-sized library.
Hernando tried to preserve his father’s honor by collecting a “new world” of many books. While Hernando’s father, Christopher, discovered the parts of the New World that Spain soon claimed as part of the empire, Hernando discovered books that he dreamed would become an empire for learning. Although Christopher himself failed to build a lucrative source of wealth for Spain, Hernando’s library did not become the source of knowledge for the Spanish people as he had hoped. Eventually, the birth name Columbus faded from history.
