Tekken Christie – The Capoeira Master!
Christie Monteiro debuted in Tekken 4 in 2002 (or 2001 in arcades). He is essentially Eddy Gordo’s replacement in the series, and like Eddy is a follower of the Capoeira style and almost identical moveset. So it’s no surprise to learn that Tekken Christie was taught by Eddy’s master, who also happens to be her grandfather. After teaching her Capoeira, Eddy suddenly and mysteriously disappeared. Christie is now on a mission to find Eddy and find out why he had to disappear so suddenly. This leads her to enter the King of Iron Fists tournament as she feels it will lead her to Eddy.
The real reason why Tekken basically replaced Christie with Eddy was because the game developers thought that the Capoeira style was more suitable for women. This style is almost more like a dance than a martial art, as one has to swing from side to side and constantly change feet. This fighting style is very exhausting as it requires constant movement even when not attacking and there is never a chance to catch your breath. It also requires a lot of flips and turns and is not too dissimilar to breakdancing.
In Tekken, Christie is usually classified as a beginner character because she is easy to learn to play and a new player can quickly and easily pull off cool looking moves. Despite this, many advanced players and hardcore fans have criticized the character, for example, believing that the gameplay has little skill and depth, as she and players can win too easily simply by “mashing buttons” (randomly pressing buttons on a controller without skill or thought). This is why Christie is only seen as an introductory character to get more people into the game.
