Learn to Play Guitar Twice as Fast While Practicing Half as Much

If you really want to learn how to play the guitar well, you need to do one simple thing more than anything else. You have to learn how learning happens between your muscles and your brain. If you understand the process your brain has to go through to train your muscles, your workouts will produce predictably effective results.

You’ve probably heard the term muscle memory before. This is the process of your brain learning and storing a set of precise instructions for each muscle group needed for each little task you want your guitar fingers to perform. When muscle memory is firmly established, it becomes a naturally effortless and almost unconscious act to play the guitar well.

These tasks should be practiced at speeds that are slow enough for you to perform them consistently and perfectly. If you practice guitar at a tempo that produces a lot of mistakes, you’ll eventually teach your muscles how to play that practice with mistakes. Unfortunately, muscles cannot distinguish between a game with errors and a game without them.

Here are 12 exercise tips to help develop good muscle memory:

1. Prepare the whole body for exercise.

Exercise in peace. Just as an airplane pilot checks an airplane before takeoff, you should check your body for tension, stiffness, tightness, pain, or any discomfort. Tight muscles can tighten during practice, which can severely limit the full range of motion needed to master the guitar. Even tension in the shoulders can move to the arms and eventually the fingers. Before playing, stretch and warm up your entire body to stay loose. Start practicing with slow and easy exercises to prepare your hands for more challenging new material.

2. Exercise in a quiet, comfortable place where you are unlikely to be disturbed.

3. Commit to exercising at a specific time each day.

Start each day with a firm commitment to a training plan that includes specific details on when, where and what to play.

4. Keep your workouts short, frequent and very specific.

It is more effective to exercise 20 minutes a day than to exercise two or three hours once a week.

5. Always practice with a metronome.

Let me repeat that. Always practice with a metronome. It’s surprising how often even good guitarists break this rule. When you learn to play at a consistent tempo, your music will sound professional. This is valuable whether you plan to play just for friends at a party or to a stadium full of screaming fans.

6. Tune your guitar before each practice session.

7. Determine the optimal exercise speed.

For each part of the scale, exercise or song, find the fastest metronome speed you can play without mistakes. Practice it for one day at 25% to 30% of your maximum pace. Follow up with a day at 50% of maximum and then the next day at 75%. On the fourth day, train at your old top speed. You may be pleasantly surprised to find that you have a new, faster top speed. However, be forewarned that this routine may seem ridiculously slow, but stick with it because it really pays off.

8. Don’t try to teach too many different things in each training session.

Practice only small parts of an exercise or song at a time. Working on an entire new song, all in one setting, makes it harder for your brain to cement solid muscle memories. Just as a newborn baby cannot handle a whole meal of solid food, we only need to practice a few small musical spoons at a time.

9. Work on the problem parts, not just what you already know.

This may sound extremely obvious, but new guitarists tend to play simple parts over and over again while still stumbling over the trouble spots.

10. Spend the first ten minutes warming up, then divide the remaining time evenly between new exercises and new songs.

11. Set aside some time to just hang out with your guitar.

Make sure you inject a healthy dose of fun into every workout. If you’ve been working on blues scales, why not play some jam tracks or even your favorite blues CD and try improvising a solo. Choose a favorite song to work on at the end of each workout.

12. If you plan to perform in front of people

perfect your songs in private and then practice playing in front of sympathetic friends and family members. Create a practice environment that is as close as possible to the conditions of your upcoming performance. If you are going to do standing, then practice this way. Tell your friendly listeners to have fun and laugh during the exercise. This will help you learn to be comfortable in a distracting concert environment. Consider recording your workouts with a simple home video camera on a tripod.

Nighttime jitters can throw off your game no matter how well you know the material. If you’ve practiced playing in simulated concert environments repeatedly, then the real deal can be a breeze.

Bottom line: In order to play well, you need to recognize how your body is programmed to learn and then design exercise sessions that are free.
