Five Essential Leadership Traits: The Story Of Martha Stewart From Kmart To Macy’s

It wasn’t that long ago that Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia (MSLO) seemed doomed. Kmart, its largest licensed home products retailer, was in Chapter 11 and closing hundreds of stores. His magazine was challenged by a new up-and-comer rival Rosie O’Donnell. Major TV stations were canceling their daytime show, and critics said the show would not finish the season. The leader of their company was ordered by the Securities and Exchange Commission to resign. Still, Martha was the most destructive and headed for prison.

With declining sales, disappearing profits and falling stock prices, few gave the homegrown diva’s business much of a chance of survival.

Fast forward to 2007. We no longer see society on the brink of extinction. The revamped daytime TV program is getting such good ratings and advertisers that it was renewed in 2008. A second show, specializing in food, can be seen on PBS, and a radio program has been added that debuted last week. Her single magazine has grown into six specialty magazines, each one of the top in their respective genres. In addition to the ongoing Kmart product line, MSLO has agreements to expand its product line with luxury retailer Macy’s and craft retailer Michael’s. New businesses include furniture and flowers and even a Martha Stewart estate.

Most important of all, the now-admired company’s sales grew by more than 50%.

Turnover

Ben Franklin once said, “What happens is not as important as how you react to what happens.” Despite a host of unfortunate events, Stewart kept looking to the future. She saw the company as a thriving entity with tremendous growth and maintained a public persona that matched her vision of success. Never pout. Always with smile. Martha looked into the distant future, overlooking what she saw as temporary inconveniences.

Things started to turn around when Martha was in prison. She learned that Susan Lyne, head of the then slumping Disney/ABC Entertainment, had been fired by the ABC brass. Their main complaint against her was that she pinned the network’s renewal on two shows they had little hope of airing so far: “Lost” and “Desperate Housewives.”

While visiting Martha in her prison in West Virginia, the two become instant friends. Martha admired Lyne’s 25-year work history and decided she was the right person to lead the company into the future. Taking over as president of MSLO, Lyne would soon garner incredible recognition: Advertising Age named her “Executive of the Year” and The Wall Street Journal called her “the best woman to watch in corporate America.”

The Five Fundamentals of Leadership

Top business leaders like Martha Stewart are known for five essential qualities:

1. Pursue your goal with passion. Anyone who knows Martha knows that MSLO is her true purpose in life. No two breaths go by without thoughts of her cause.

2. Practice fixed values. Not every aspect of a great leader is based on a fixed value, but all great leaders have one or more fixed values that they focus on. For Martha, her company is all about quality products for a better lifestyle at a great price. No one can deny that these attributes drive her actions.

3. Lead with your heart and your head. The rumors about Martha are correct. For the most part, they see people as commodities. Still, she shows heart in helping the people who work for her or with her to be successful. Still, it’s more of a team than an individual achievement.

4. Established connected relationships. The relationship with Kmart symbolizes her view of partnership. When Kmart filed for bankruptcy, Martha could easily move her products to another retailer. She has remained loyal, and that loyalty is being built by helping Kmart emerge from Chapter 11.

5. Demonstrate self-discipline. Martha’s self-discipline demonstrates her unwavering focus on her products and consumer demand. Stewart devotes little time to activities unrelated to her MSLO business.

MSLO’s success provides a lesson for all business professionals. Whether you’re leading a Fortune 500 company or a single-employee LLC, or planning to grow an individual or a department, the five essential principles of leadership provide a blueprint for lifestyle and attitude leading to success.
