How to Brainstorm the Best Jobs For 13 Year Olds This Summer
Looking for fun summer jobs for 13 year olds? To prevent them from complaining about being bored?
Or is your teen dreading having to work at a fast food restaurant and smelling like a greasy ball at McDonald’s or Burger King?
Fortunately, McDonald’s isn’t the only teenage job in town. But the best summer jobs for kids 13 and older really depend on their interests.
Here’s how my daughter and I brainstormed the best teen jobs for her this summer.
First, I asked him to think…
What do you like to do? What are your interests and hobbies? Or what would you do for free whether you get paid or not?
My daughter loves horses. He spends countless hours during the summer in the stable…brushing, grooming, cleaning stalls and of course riding his horse. So I wasn’t surprised when he came up with the idea of getting a horse-related summer job.
And his second choice was swimming. He is on the high school varsity swim team and is even in his sophomore year. So getting a job around water would also be a lot of fun.
Here’s what we did for the horse-related teen jobs:
Working at a horse camp
Riding stable
Stable help (cleaning, feeding, grooming)
Sitting Horse
Saddle and tack shop
And for teen jobs related to swimming:
first aid
Swimming instructor
YMCA pool
Summer swimming camp
Sounds like really fun jobs for 13-year-olds, right?
But the BEST part is that any of these teen jobs wouldn’t feel like “work” at all.
alone FUNNY.
But do any of these jobs pay well?
After doing a little research and making a few calls, we were happy to find that all of the previous jobs paid better than minimum wage. Your area may pay more or less, but the average was $7.50 an hour.
Now all I had to do was choose the teen jobs to apply for.
After much thought, he decided to start his own business. So she put together some flyers and brochures that offered “riding” for people going on vacation.
And she’s making money doing what she loves to do…and I don’t have to nag her to wake up to go to work!
You can follow these same 3 steps to come up with the best teen job:
1) Find out or ask your teen what they would do for FREE whether they were paid or not.
2) Brainstorm ideas for work or home business opportunities (get creative here!)
3) APPLY, APPLY, APPLY!
It really is that simple…good luck!
