Kids’ Art – Anger Management That is Transformative and Fun
One form of anger management training takes into account a basic law of nature: energy can be changed from one form to another. Fossil fuels, for example, can be converted into forms of electrical energy. Potential energy is converted into kinetic energy when we move. The key is to find a fun and affordable way to make this conversion possible.
Helping your child channel excess energy, stress, or anger into something positive can easily be done through art. Children are naturally attuned to creative expression. Many simply need to be given the space, time and materials necessary for creative transformation to take place.
There are several ways the caregiver or parent can help the child with this form of anger management.
1. Make the choice the main focus of this activity. Giving the reluctant child a choice is the best way to get their cooperation. Get out as many tools and materials as possible, such as craft dough, papier-mâché, paint, pencils, crayons, brushes, plastic spoons, forks, potatoes, paper, strips of newsprint and Bristol cardboard.
2. Allow the child space and room for his creative impulses. The garden at the back of the house or the deck that can be cleaned with a hose are perfect places to develop the desire to do something of your heart. The key is to give the child space: space to work with the materials, space to play and experiment with what’s in front of him or her, space to think, space to let twin ideas go, even space to take a break and start over. It is absolutely necessary that we abandon the idea of a one-hour arts and crafts session; no one can work creatively in temporary circumstances.
3. Give praise and encouragement openly and often. You are not training your child for the Academy of Arts. You are giving the energetic self a way to play with excess energy. Positive encouragement is the best way to keep this worry at bay. Any creation, even a half-baked one, deserves a positive comment. The boy is making something out of nothing and that in itself is noteworthy.
Positive comments encourage the child to establish the connection between a specific activity and his emotional state. You want him or her to make this connection a lifelong affair.
4. Play soft music in the background; it can be soft classical music or happy children’s songs. Studies have confirmed that music has a powerful effect on our emotions. Researchers have found that the emotions evoked by upbeat music can produce healthy effects on blood vessel functions. The sense of joy that is awakened in the listeners causes the blood vessels to dilate or expand, allowing for greater oxygenation of the body.
5. Display your child’s art. Make your home an art gallery. There is nothing that boosts self-esteem more than seeing your creations displayed and appreciated. I have my grandchildren’s artwork all over my fridge and all over the walls up and down the stairs in my house. Place them in sturdy frames to make my home literally an art gallery for your creations.
6. If you can, create with children. I love making my own artwork with the kids. Being there adds a whole new dimension to the experience. I do not just supervise them, but actively participate in their work. Not only is it fun for me (it makes me 10 years younger); it is absolutely fundamental to my own development as an artist. They give me great suggestions. Children are the best critics of art when given the chance.
Anger management doesn’t have to be a form of heavy training. Anger management can be fun, centered, and transformative through art.
