The Secret Herbal Colic Home Remedy
Is it true? Can there really be a home remedy for colic?
After hearing stories from my friends whose new babies have battled colic, the idea of a remedy must come as a welcome relief, a breath of fresh air, and a glimpse of possible rest for your family.
Colic occurs in many different levels of severity being caused by spasms of young intestines or gas trapped in the intestine. My babies never experienced what I would consider a serious case of colic, and yet we faced some early digestive challenges that caused them discomfort and found herbal remedies that worked for us.
My favorite home remedy for colic is catnip, fennel tea.
Prepare this brew by pouring a cup of boiling water over 2 teaspoons of dried catnip leaves and 1 teaspoon of fennel.
Let it infuse for 15 minutes.

Drink this infusion right before breastfeeding to pass the benefits on to the baby, or give it directly to your baby via dropper or bottle.
With Hailey, I would make an even stronger infusion, putting a handful of catnip and a spoonful of fennel in about 4 cups of water and simmering for 20 minutes. I gave him a full dropper at a time, every half hour until the discomfort subsided. It worked very well. Choose a strength and dosage that feels comfortable for you in your situation.
Other aromatic seeds such as dill, anise and cumin can also be used to create a colic home remedy seed tea. Simply pour a cup of boiling water over a teaspoon of any or a combination of seeds and let steep for 15 minutes. Pass it through breast milk or give it directly to your baby as recommended above. Seed tea offers antispasmodic and carminative effects that will help relieve colic.
Two other colic remedies are recommended in Susun Weed’s Healing Wise and seem worth trying. One is to put cold, wet woolen socks on your baby’s feet and then dry cotton socks over the woolen ones. She writes that mothers report that their children relax and fall asleep soon after putting on the socks.
Another possibility for a home remedy for colic is to prepare slippery elm gruel.
To do this, mix a liquid sweetener (like maple syrup, definitely NOT HONEY, as honey should never be given to a baby under one year old because botulism could occur) with slippery elm powder until it’s all wet. Add milk or hot water until porridge results. Give one or more servings to help settle the bowels.
All of these colic home remedies help with digestion to ease the discomfort of colic, and there are also many things you can do to prevent colic.
Some of these things include giving small, frequent feedings and soothing your baby with skin-to-skin contact during feeding. Also feeding your baby is a quiet, safe place can help digestion flow more easily.
If you’re breastfeeding, you can also avoid gas-producing foods like brassicas, including broccoli, kale and cabbage, as well as onions and garlic.
I usually recommend that mothers also take the beans and spicy foods during the first few days of breastfeeding. Other foods such as chocolate, peanuts, sugar and white flour can slow down bowel activity and cause colic, so you can try to eliminate them. Also limit the intake of food laxatives (such as prune juice) as they can upset the baby’s bowels.
My hope is that these tips and home remedies for colic will help you feel empowered and give you some strategies to work with your baby in natural ways to ease their discomfort and help you get some rest.
