How I Got Rid Of My Migraine Headaches Without Supplements or Medications
Here’s a little history of my migraine headaches, why I believe I have them, and what has worked for me to eliminate these excruciatingly uncomfortable conditions after 7 years. I got them around the age of 25. They would start suddenly and put me in bed for 1 – 2 hours. Then they would dissolve and I would feel better again. I didn’t get them too often – about once every 3-4 months. However, after 7 years of suffering from them, they seemed to be happening more frequently.
So far, it’s been 10 months without a headache. I consider this a significant improvement.
Also, I’m not a doctor, so take this advice at your own risk. But maybe someone reading this will find the ideas described in this article worth trying and maybe even useful. I came across the solution quite by accident, as I experimented with cutting certain types of foods out of my diet and wanting to find out how it affected me.
I was looking to improve my skin conditions and digestion. For almost 20 years I suffered from mild skin rashes and eczema due to my inability to tolerate certain types of food. I also had chronic diarrhea and thus problems with nutrient absorption. Those two diseases are something my father also had, so I thought it was something I would never be able to change.
In addition, I have been allergic since I was 12 years old. Every spring I have less hay once everything starts to flower.
Trying to alleviate those symptoms on my own without the use of artificial drugs or artificial chemicals, I have always been a fan of natural remedies and self-help books. I avoided taking medication or supplements whenever possible. Instead, I made changes to what I eat and took notes on my general feeling or body reactions. To increase the chances of getting more reliable information, I often ate only 2 or 3 different foods during a given time period. Over the years I have developed a better understanding and awareness of how specific foods affect my overall energy levels, digestion, as well as food intolerance and allergy symptoms.
Due to my food intolerance symptoms I ended up eating a lot of white bread, which seems to cause the least amount of rashes and eczema while giving me the most feeling of fullness. I knew that many people with allergies felt better once they completely stopped eating gluten. But I liked the sweet taste and the crisp smell of fresh white bread so much that it was almost 10 years before I decided to try to do without it.
I enjoyed eating white bread daily for years as it seemed to be one of the few things that didn’t cause too many skin problems. However, I didn’t realize that I was slowly causing damage to my body in other ways. I had given up dairy products already in my teens, as these would give me more symptoms and discomfort. However, gluten-rich white bread has been my staple along with buckwheat for a long period of time.
I decided to give up gluten completely just under a year ago. Already after 3 months I started to notice significant positive changes in my skin, knee arthritis, digestion, hair loss. By the time it’s been 10 months, the only two times I’ve had milder symptoms of headaches have been when I went to visit someone and chose to take them up on their offer to eat gluten-containing foods. Both times I developed a milder headache within 24 hours of eating those foods. This made me even more aware of the effect gluten has on my body.
From time to time, I still miss white bread. But once I remember the terrible headaches I now no longer have, it’s easier to seek satiety from alternative food sources. Instead, I replaced white bread with more cooked vegetables and fresh fruit. This doesn’t give me headaches, although it has an even more healing effect on my skin, digestion, and other minor body ailments I’ve developed over the years that are probably related to my gluten intolerance.
For now, an effective way to get rid of migraine headaches is to stay away from gluten.
