How I Overcame Procrastination

“Procrastination is the art of sticking to yesterday.” – Don Marqués

Well, with that appointment Don Marqués, without a doubt, gave me a headache as far as I was concerned. But that was not long ago when I was considered the king of procrastinators. I’m a changed guy now, but I’ll tell you what: read how I’ve changed, and maybe that will help procrastinators everywhere.

Before I start talking about my lazy life, let me describe procrastination: Procrastination is the habit of doing something today that should have been done before yesterday. Yes, simply speaking, procrastination is the art of continuing to put off tasks. Now, on to my story:

Once upon a time, three months ago to be exact, my routine went something like this: lounging on the couch drinking cups of coffee instead of attending to my daily rest rituals; bunking exercise, thinking I would catch up tomorrow; delay writing checks that needed immediate attention; hanging out on the couch and staying up late watching TV instead of catching up on my sleep; pushing important tasks like filing my tax returns by the last date etc.

The consequences continued to add up and my slips began to appear: my colleagues lost respect for me as I was fatigued during working hours; my children began to treat me as part of the furniture; my friends started avoiding me since I hadn’t bothered to catch up with them because of past times, and every time I looked into my wife’s eyes, I could read “shape up or ship out” loud and clear. All I loved was Bud, our dog, but that wasn’t enough.

From being a fun-loving human, procrastination turned me into a lazy dog and from a lazy dog I was turning into a lazy pig. I had to do something to shake my procrastination and regain my self-confidence. I knew my path to salvation lay in my self-determination, but I needed help. I took my wife into confidence and discovered my soul, and from there I began my journey of redemption: my wife would now be my guide and mentor and help me avoid my procrastination.

As I look back, I realize that getting rid of procrastination is not as difficult as it seems. These are some of the measures I resorted to, and this is what I did:

1. First, I had to steel my mind. If he had to do it, he had to do it now. This kind of chanting became a song, and although I was a slow starter, I started right away attending to important tasks and gradually got a hold of myself.

2. I started thinking positively. I washed away all the negative feelings I had about my boss, my friends, my colleagues and even my wife and painted them all the color of sunlight and my whole thought process changed for the better. The cobwebs in my mind cleared and I began to look at people and things with a new perspective.

3. Positive thinking gradually drove away all the self-destructive thoughts that used to lurk in my mind. “Can’t” became “I can,” “Shall not” became “Will fare,” and things began to change because I began to receive positive feedback from my family members.

4. Little by little, I started planning tasks and started enjoying the process too! Well, my wife was there to urge me on, and my kids looked at their dad in a new light and that gave me the strength to continue my anti-procrastination drive.

5. Okay, I’d be lying if I said the transformation was magical, because it wasn’t. To begin with, I had to break down important tasks into small, doable pieces and then tackle them. But, over time, I found that I could handle monstrous tasks in an instant.

6. Well, I tried a little meditation and found that it had a calming influence on me. Believe me, a calming influence can give you the inner strength to get your work done without anyone’s help or interference.

This is the essence of how I went about breaking my procrastination. Today, the sun shines on me while I have the respect of my colleagues and friends and the love of my family.

And now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to plan my budget for next month and help my lovely daughter with her school project work. I started my story with a quote and now I will end with a:

“Someday is not a day of the week.” – Unknown author

Good luck!
