Foolish Wisdom with Children
The boy stood in the middle of the supermarket aisle, screaming, while the mother reached for something on a nearby shelf, apparently giving up on trying to calm her down. A retired teacher (bless us!) stopped by to shop in the next aisle. She pushed her cart toward the scene and bent down to speak directly to the boy. “We don’t do things like that in a store,” she whispered. The girl stopped screaming and went to stand next to her mother.
When I related this incident to my mother (also a retired teacher). She said that, at church, the children sitting in front of her often don’t stop moving or talking. His solution is to put his hand on a child’s shoulder. When the boy turns around, as he always does, my mother just smiles. She says it works every time.
I am struck by the wisdom of these two women, and their respect. Out of respect, the teacher, experienced in handling children, spoke directly to the child. He didn’t blame the mother, or give her advice. My mother does not speak at all, but through her touch and her smile, she reminds the child where he is and what is expected in that place.
Perhaps these incidents seem insignificant compared to the problems we face on a daily basis. Maybe calling them wise sounds silly. But it’s also possible that acts of care affect both the giver and the receiver, and that investing in kindness has its own rewards.
In the coming weeks, I hope you notice how the people around you show kindness to friends and strangers alike. And don’t forget to see these qualities in yourself.
