Diseases from House Flies
I am writing this article as a way to promote our fly swatters. Provides information on diseases that can be caused by houseflies.
Houseflies frequent manure piles and other faecal sources. They also visit decaying matter, including dead animals. By landing on food that is prepared for human consumption, the contaminated material is often transferred to the food.
There are a wide variety of diseases that can be transmitted by flies. Here are some of them:
Typhoid fever (Salmonella typhi)
Symptoms: High temperature (up to 104 degrees F or 40 degrees C), loss of appetite, headache, stomach pain, and usually some weakness. Sometimes a pink rash appears.
Treatment: A doctor will usually prescribe an antibiotic and the symptoms will disappear within a few days. If treatment is not given, the subject can become seriously ill and even die from secondary problems (up to 20% of typhoid fever patients die without treatment).
Cholera (caused by Vibria cholerae, a bacterium)
Symptoms: unexpected episodes of watery diarrhea containing patches of white mucous material, stomach pains, dry or sticky mouth, sunken eyes, concentrated colored urine, in a child markedly sunken fontanelles (the soft spot on top of the head), dryness. skin, nausea and vomiting (usually).
Treatment: Cases can range from mild to severe. If left untreated, severe cases can lead to imminent death. Drink plenty of fresh water, mixed with small amounts of salt and sugar. This will restore body fluid. Treatment should be given immediately.
Escherichia coli
Symptoms: Depends on the strain of Escherichia coli. Most strains are harmless and produce no detectable symptoms. Other strains, such as O157:H7, can sometimes cause bloody diarrhea. In a very small number of cases, Escherichia coli O157:H7 can cause hemolytic uremic syndrome which can lead to kidney failure in young children. For most of us, and most of the time, Escherichia coli does not cause problems.
Treatment: No treatment is necessary unless uremic syndrome occurs, in which case blood transfusion and renal dialysis may be necessary.
Shigellosis (caused by Shigella, a bacteria)
Symptoms: diarrhea (often bloody), fever and stomach pains. Most cases are mild and may not even be noticed. In a small number of cases, the very young and very old may be vulnerable to high fever, possibly (and rarely) causing a seizure in a child.
These are just some of the diseases that can be transmitted by houseflies. Be on your guard. To be safe, you may want to install a fly swatter (details to follow).
