Five Different Types of Babysitters
There are good babysitters, then there are exceptional babysitters…
When I was training in Miami, one of my teachers gave me some sage advice. She said, “If you find a good nanny, keep her, and never breathes a word about its existence.” Then she told me the story of how she had a great nanny, mentioned how great the nanny was to one of her neighbors, and the next week saw her neighbor running down the street to catch her and hire her.
I believe there are several levels of babysitting. I will rank them in order of increasing value:
-
The “Negative Experience” Girl: You’re better off leaving the kids in the custody of the neighbor’s pit bull. A friend recounted the story this week of how a college girl she trusted decided to take her children, without her permission or knowledge, to her sorority reunion. He drove them there in his car without using seats and returned them with the youngest daughter, who had a fever of 102 degrees. I’m sure there are other horror stories you can think of.
-
The “I Know What Your Kids Really Need” Girl: Usually an older girl who may have had children of her own. She decides that she knows better than you about what is best for your children. They tend to come in two breeds: the hyper-authoritative “Supernanny wannabe” type and the “I know your mommy and daddy wouldn’t normally give you this candy but…” type. Enough said.
-
The basic standard sitter model. You come home. Children are safe and accounted for. The house is still standing.
-
The big girl The children learned something new. The girl involved them in games or crafts or some kind of outdoor fun. The children are safe and happy. The little ones are still down and asleep at nap time. The house is in relatively good condition and the children do not need an immediate bath.
-
The exceptional nanny. All of #5 above, PLUS the house is CLEAN, who isn’t frantic and mentions that she recruited the kids to help her clean. Bonus points if laundry is in progress. The nanny comes straight from heaven if any clothes are folded. Definitely above and beyond the call of duty, but I guarantee mom will ask for it back with tears in her eyes.
We have had many very good babysitters over the past few years. However, there is a short list of truly exceptional people we have had.
My wife and I went out to dinner recently to celebrate our anniversary. When we got home he was home impeccable. It was great to see Robyn walk in, see a spotless kitchen and gasp, then breathe a sigh of relief and give the person a glowing thank you for making it a “perfect night” (and I thought she was doing it. well with a good dinner). I bet she emptied the cookie jar.
… and, NO, I will not reveal our baby girl’s name…
