Toxic Overload

A thirty-six-year-old construction worker was writhing in pain as the ambulance took him to the hospital. Andy’s cramps were excruciating and he thought he was going to die. The doctor told him that his gallbladder had to be removed and that there was no time to waste. Three hours later, this apparently healthy young man lay recovering in his hospital bed without a vital organ needed for the body system to function properly, like a car with a leaking gas valve. And where are the gallstones now since Andy had his gall bladder removed?

A fifty-six-year-old widowed secretary and grandmother of six began experiencing severe abdominal pain, throbbing back pain, nausea, and vomiting. My taste buds liked the sugary sweet sensation because I was addicted to sugar and caffeine.

Sweets, cakes and cookies filled our cupboards and kitchen counters; we even had a drawer in the kitchen called the junk drawer that was always full of processed takeout snacks. Sound familiar? When I was young, eating this way didn’t phase me, I was a top runner in track, the girl’s middleweight arm wrestling champion, and I won several presidential awards for my athletic ability.

But soon everything changed. I got married and had three kids, and started eating a little better, just because my husband was more health conscious than I was. About eight years later, my athletic, muscle-toned body began to take on a new shape and feel. I didn’t like how I felt. In my thirties, I had persistent low back pain; I could barely sit or stand without looking like the Hunchback of Notre Dame. For two years I had a constant throbbing in my lower back. I was afraid for my health because the doctors, or I did not know what the problem was.

He had huge pimples on his shoulders even though he rubbed them vigorously with a loofah pad every day. I wasn’t fat, but I started to show a belly, and several days would go by without moving the bowl. My back, obviously being the weakest part of my body, was getting seriously worse. I went to the doctor, and they told me that I was as healthy as an ox and nothing was wrong. He told me to do several exercises that would help reduce the pain in my back. He also informed me that lower back pain is experienced by 70% of the population at some point in their lives, and is something most people just learn to live with. This was not good news.

I tried the exercises, and it helped a little, but soon the palpitations came back. With two babies and a toddler, I certainly couldn’t lie on the floor doing exercises all day.
