Treatments For Insect Bites and Stings

I used to go barefoot in the spring. Then, unfortunately, I discovered bees. That made me a lot more careful about walking around barefoot, let me tell you!

My mom took quick action with baking soda and water paste a few minutes after the incident and that helped. Still, I ended up with ten days of home treatment, because I’m one of those people with an allergy to bee stings. It was horrible.

I had to keep my swollen foot elevated. I had to soak it every so often in warm water with Epsom salts. That felt so good. I would get pins and needles, but hot baths helped a lot. I bet it would have hurt a lot more without these.

If you put the baking soda paste on the bite right away, it can draw out the poison. There are other ways to do it too. I’m not a fan of tobacco, but if you get stung by a bee and put wet tobacco on it, it can draw out some of the venom.

I still swear by baking soda. Works for all types of insect bites. Also, if you’re not allergic, try camphor oil. That works too. My grandparents used lard to make the itching and irritation less severe.

Unfortunately, none of these work for some of the worst bug bites out there. Chiggers are pretty much the worst things to get bitten by. The itching is so intense that you may end up needing prednisone.

A home remedy that can work is to paint each bite with nail polish. I was so miserable from chigger bites that I grabbed the first bottle I could reach, but frankly I recommend a bottle of clear nail polish if you want to try this trick.

It is much better if you can avoid being bitten by them in the first place, or minimize the number and frequency of chigger bites. Some people swear that spices can make your sweat unattractive to chiggers. Try cayenne, marjoram and ginger for this purpose.
