Camping at Lac Le Jeune, British Columbia

A beautiful camping spot in BC is a scenic drive to Lac Le Jeune Provincial Park between Merritt and Kamloops. It took less than 4 hours of driving, including a stop for lunch in Hope, for the little ones to stretch their restless legs. The weather can be quite hot during July and August, but the lake is delightfully cool.

We use two tents for our family, a large six person tent for our three kids so they can stretch out and have room in the center to play. We love that store! You can stand up inside and still have some headroom! We’ve also brought our newest addition to our tent collection, an ultralight extra-long three-person that’s primarily used for backpacking.

I don’t know the temperature of the lake, but it is very refreshing and not too cold that it takes your breath away. Even our youngest got into something weird. A small sandy beach worked great for entertaining the kids, so bring sand toys if you go there.

Downside: It seemed to be leech breeding season while we were there for a week in August and a few people, including our kids, got their first leech lessons. Also, the geese were there all summer, which meant the grassy area was completely covered in goose poop, but the park hired a “superior goose poop collector” who worked tirelessly between 5 and 10 a.m. every morning. days What a job!

The kids loved the naturalist show and earned all their Jerry Ranger stickers! This is such a great program for children with a planned activity each morning followed by different types of talks, plays and other programs each evening in the amphitheater.

There is also a decent playground for the little ones to enjoy. The paved roads are perfect for biking and the dirt roads around the lake are great fun for walking and biking.

Since the beetles destroyed so many trees there a few years ago, many of the pines had to be removed, leaving the campsite quite open with a lack of privacy and shade. The advantage of this is that the campsite will take on a new look over the years as new young trees grow.

will we come back Probably in a few years when the trees get bigger. I found this campsite very good for relaxing. Not much to do if you don’t have a boat with you or have very young children who won’t be walking or cycling for hours on end. We caught some fish from shore but no bites although we have heard tales from previous years of 3-4lbs being caught.

On the bug side, they weren’t too bad. Just a few mosquitos and wasps but nothing compared to previous camping elsewhere.

Final note: I saw the Milky Way in the middle of the night and had the privilege of hearing hooves and owls all night every night, which we honestly enjoyed and missed on our first night back home.

This is a great family campsite and well worth checking out. It’s also a short drive to Kamloops if you forget an essential or are looking for a break one day.
