Who Needs Magnesium?

Now that’s a question, isn’t it?

Until the other Sunday I would vaguely say:

“Oh, well, I guess everyone, to a certain extent.”

So that Sunday I got up, had breakfast and got ready for church. All the while having the uneasy feeling that I was going to fall. –

What?

Weird, but what worried me was that I had started to feel a little dizzy too, dizzy, you know, like my brain was swimming inside my head, not knowing what to do with itself. Which I’ll admit, I was starting to feel a little scared.

I think it came to a head when I went for a walk looking for a church closer to my house that I could walk to instead of taking the car. But that day, instead of going up the road, noticing that the parking lot was full, I decided that the service had probably already started so, not wanting to go into a place where I didn’t know anyone, I went back home. Instead of going in, sitting down with a Panadol and a cup, I just collected my car keys and drove to my regular church. It’s also pretty new to me as I’ve only been living here for a few weeks.

I then went to a nearby cafe for lunch with some of my new friends, where I started having trouble standing again. When I told one of my colleagues, she told me about a relative of hers who had experienced something similar. As he is a farmer, he reminded ‘The Staggers’ that cattle suffer when they lack magnesium. She told her doctor and they recommended she try a magnesium supplement.

Now, up until a few weeks before, I had been taking a supplement that actually included magnesium, but had run out of tablets. The main supplement in the tablets was turmeric and not magnesium. At that point I just thought, well, I’ll get some more next bi-weekly shop. Of course, since this was just something I had bought because I thought it might be good for my health, it wasn’t really something I thought was important. So I just forgot about the next store, telling myself when I remembered (after I got home, of course), don’t worry, I’ll just get some next store. Needless to say, I forgot too. is

However, after my “episode” on Sunday I made sure to buy some magnesium tablets and started taking them daily. Within a week I seemed to be back to normal, so again I forgot about it. I continued to take the tablets though.

Until no, I ran out and thought I’d wait until the next store, well you know the saying, those who don’t remember their history, will still have the same results. A few days of nodding off as I sat in a comfortable chair all day, then the return of the swimming in the head problem sent me to the pharmacist pretty quickly.

But – it also sent me to the computer and my second favorite occupation, deep research. I quickly discovered that people may not need a magnesium supplement if they eat a few servings of nuts, seeds, whole grains, beans, leafy greens, milk, yogurt, and fortified foods, which are good sources of this product. Even water (tap, mineral, bottled) can provide it. Although, unfortunately, many of us don’t eat all the foods that will help us, do we?

And for me the question that follows is – WHY do we need it? –

Did you know that the Mayo Clinic reported that magnesium supports muscles, nerve function and energy production, synthesizes proteins, DNA and RNA. Like some antibiotics and osteoporosis drugs. In addition, the antioxidant glutathione contributes to the structural development of bones and helps to increase the absorption of calcium.

Plus, just 1 ounce of raw almonds contains 20% of your daily magnesium needs. And who doesn’t like almonds? okay I know there are some who don’t and even some who are allergic, but for many of us YUM.

Magnesium also plays a role, in our metabolism, cells use magnesium to transport calcium and potassium ions across cell walls.

On the other hand, low magnesium levels have been linked to osteoporosis, anxiety, depression among other conditions, as well as ADHD.

Magnesium is sometimes recommended as a supplement to help treat people with high blood pressure, some chronic diseases, diabetes, chronic fatigue syndrome.

Excessive drinking and alcoholism sometimes cause chronically low magnesium levels, as do Crohn’s disease and celiac disease. Older adults (like me ï Š) may be prone to have lower levels than young adults. Partly because the gut often becomes less efficient at absorbing magnesium while our kidneys can become less efficient at retaining magnesium. Also, type 2 diabetes can cause the kidneys to excrete too much magnesium, leading to (surprise, surprise) magnesium deficiency.

Several long-term studies have found a correlation between high magnesium levels and a lower risk of heart disease, sudden cardiac death, and ischemic heart disease (National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements). This also helps prevent strokes. An analysis of 7 studies, including one of more than 200,000 people, found that an extra 100 ml of magnesium daily reduced the risk of stroke by 8% (February 2012 review in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition). Very positive findings.

Side effects of the supplement may include:

Nausea, cramps and diarrhea

It may interact with certain medications, diuretics, heart medications, or antibiotics.

Patients with diabetes, intestinal diseases, heart or kidney diseases should consult their doctor before starting a course of treatment.

Signs of overdose may include nausea, diarrhea, low blood pressure, muscle weakness, and fatigue.

As with many medical remedies, very high doses can have serious effects.

There has been much more revealed through my research, but all things considered, including the disappearance of the original symptoms I experienced before I started taking my magnesium supplements, I truly believe that health monitoring after starting a course of magnesium , as long as any adverse effects are noted, is a great way to increase magnesium in the body and aid health and fitness.

So to my original question – Who needs magnesium? –

I would have to say – Probably everyone.
