The Milky Bar Kids – A Memorable First

Our dairy was a herringbone style with cows standing next to each other in a staggered fashion – 6 on each side of a waist-deep pit where we worked with sets of drop-down milking cups. A strong steel bar in their bottoms and a thick concrete ledge behind their back feet kept them from joining us down there…mostly.

This old dairy had been the first herringbone style in the area – an advance in its day – but this one already had ‘whiskers’ – as we would discover -. There was a long trough with a walk space in front to allow him to hand scoop his ration of crushed grain. For the sake of speed and ease of handling, he had carefully lined up where each cow’s head would be and placed 6 buckets in each trough. It seemed good to me.

On this first day, the husband and I went on foot to bring the cows. His size was a bit “superior” for this ex-secretary, and some “Dutch courage” needed strengthening. Lesson no. l – when cows have been welcomed by a sheep farmer and his dogs – and then given quiet but firm encouragement from humans “on foot”, they do NOT respond with gratitude and appreciation.

NO… the dripping ladies had to stop whatever they were doing ‘staring at us wide-eyed’; ‘poop’; turn around and start following us (from an ever-shrinking distance…did I mention, cows are SO curious); ‘poo’ more; finally they start moving together – in the wrong direction; and just for good luck, “poop” again.

On this day, it required a human in front, to be followed, and a human behind to encourage forward momentum. I can’t tell you how much we laughed at the memory. We seriously had no idea! But at last they were in the concrete yard with the gate firmly chained behind them. With the push of a button, the milking machine sprang into action and it’s “all systems go”.

Except… the first cow into the dairy stopped at the first pile of feed in the long trough and started eating. And everyone else started piling up behind her, pushing and shoving like a mob scene at the opening of a department store sale. Then there were cows in the engine room and the milk room around the huge (and extremely valuable) refrigerated milk vat. A couple walked down the stairs to “our” well; two were tight between the tail rail and the trough; and another tried to jump over the manger, and succeeded in placing him on his horse in its place.

Before this event, we were apprehensive, but bravado was sure to outshine anything we faced. Huh! Now our stomachs and nervous systems looked more like the stuff jellyfish are made of as we tried to restore order to the incredible chaos that overwhelmed us. I remember we had to let them back out into the dirt yard next to the concrete and clean up the milk (you can guess why!). Then remove the offending feed from the diners. Oh! Feed them after they’ve come in and messed around and fixed themselves (and “pooped” again, where does it all come from?).

Believe me, it’s not work for the faint of heart – all these poppy eyes with huge heads, all staring at you. Some want to smell and taste with snake-long tongues (well, almost), while others poke their eyes, poke their ears, and poke their heads. It’s hard to decide which is worse. There was one more thing that happened before this long day ended, but that’s another story, coming soon, honestly!

It’s been almost 4 hours since he “went” to milk 26 cows. We were very proud to find that we cut that down to 2-1/2 hours on the next one – the afternoon milking. That day, we wouldn’t believe the “norm” we achieved much later: 65 cows in 2 hours!

But this was ‘rua fácil’, as my mother-in-law would tell you. He grew up in Denmark, milking three cows by hand, three times a day – and he was not denied the opportunity to learn hairdressing.

“There’s no future in hairstyles, girl – milk cows – that’s what you have to do!” declared her Father, very sternly.

Hmm-mm-m! (says Christine… the cowgirl?)
