Sciatica – How to Get Rid of the Pain
If you have a burning sensation along your spine, this can often mean that you may be suffering from sciatica. The name of the disease Sciatica, derives from the compression or irritation of the “sciatic nerve”. This is the largest nerve in our body and runs down the spinal cord, through the buttocks and down the back of each leg.
Sciatica sufferers often have back problems in the past, such as a prolapsed or slipped disc. However, it is not unknown for people with no previous problems to suffer from sciatica.
In fact, a “slipped disc” is the result of the softer internal material crossing over and aggravating the roots of the sciatic nerve along the spinal cord. It is not unusual for some pregnant women to suffer from sciatica, during pregnancy or even during childbirth. Improper lifting of heavy objects or stress can also trigger sciatica.
Sciatica pains can range from mild to very painful, possibly even immobilizing the sufferer. All sufferers complain of having sharp pains along the spine, and in the buttocks and legs. A tingling sensation or even numbness in the legs and feet, along with a general feeling of weakness are symptoms experienced by some.
Fortunately for some people, sciatica can be a temporary condition and subsides over time. Obviously, during pregnancy, the effects of sciatica should disappear after delivery.
Tip 1 – Temporary relief can be achieved by lying on your back, on the floor for short periods of time. While on the floor, keep your knees bent and both feet flat on the floor. Support your head with a good pillow or some books.
Tip 2 – If you can, arrange a session with an aromatherapist. A proper massage using the right oils will help relieve the pain.
Tip 3: A warm bath with lavender oil can also be helpful in relaxing the muscles that cause pain.
Obviously, to avoid sciatica pain, we should strive to keep our bones and nerves healthy. Try to eat more foods that are mainly rich in calcium (fresh or canned fish, like bones too). Magnesium is also a valuable source (nuts and soybeans). Make sure you get your daily dose of vitamin D as this helps the body absorb calcium. Alternatively, you can try supplementing your diet with brewer’s yeast.
Obviously, if your sciatica condition worsens dramatically, or does not improve over time, you should see your GP or doctor for treatment.
