The answer before the background

Our recommendation

The Age of Darkness Final Stand best units are a combination rather than one spam choice. Protected ranged troops provide the most reliable Death Night uptime, faction specialists or siege support handle durable targets, and melee or support units protect the firing line. Keep part of the army mobile so a side spawn, disabled tower, or broken wall does not turn a strong front into an unrecoverable defeat.

Cover crowds, armor, and recovery with different jobs

A Death Night army needs sustained crowd damage, an answer for high-health or protected Nightmares, and enough control or screening to keep those damage dealers firing. The official game emphasizes faction-specific units, so the exact roster changes, but the job list does not. Before training more of a favorite unit, ask which enemy reaches the wall, which target survives too long, and which part of the formation stops attacking after contact.

Ranged units become valuable when towers, walls, terrain, and target priority create long safe firing windows. They become wasteful when placed too far back, blocked by line of sight, or left exposed after the first barrier falls. Melee units should screen, intercept, and protect a retreat rather than stand in the center of the largest wave without sustain. Specialist units earn their cost only when their preferred target actually appears.

Turn walls and towers into time on target

The best unit choice can still fail in a poor choke. Build layers so the first contact point slows enemies while several protected positions fire. Leave space to repair, replace a wall, and move a reserve through the settlement. A single deep block can look efficient but often removes recovery options; once it breaks, workers and production become the next targets.

Official patch v1.0.2.5 changed tower quality of life so target priority no longer resets when Towers and Ballista Towers are upgraded. Use priority deliberately: the main damage line can focus the threat it was built to kill while general coverage removes smaller enemies. Recheck settings after loading an old save or changing the formation, and do not assume a unit is weak when target selection is wasting its attacks.

  • Put long-uptime ranged damage behind more than one failure layer.
  • Use a smaller mobile force to answer side pressure and leaks.
  • Place support where it affects several important groups.
  • Match target priority to the unit's intended enemy class.

Compare units inside the faction economy that produces them

The Order, Rebellion, and Volatists have different bonuses, heroes, and special units. A unit with an excellent ceiling may arrive too late or cost too much for a particular opening. Another may look ordinary but fit the faction's production rhythm and hero support. Rank the complete package: unlock timing, training capacity, upkeep, required research, movement, range, survivability, and the enemy job it solves.

Community unit-stat and damage guides are useful references for discovering hidden interactions, but prominent examples were authored during early access and label versions such as 0.8.4. Use them to form a question, then verify the current tooltip and observe several comparable waves. Record the installed version, faction, difficulty, relevant research, tower position, and target type. That makes the result reproducible without pretending that one old table is a permanent current tier list.

Low-regret composition

Start with a protected ranged core, add the specialist needed for the next durable threat, and reserve enough mobile bodies to stabilize a breach. Expand only after each role is covered.

Common questions

Should I put ranged units inside towers?

Protected elevation and long firing uptime can be very effective, but the position must cover the real route and retain a fallback layer if the front wall fails.

Are normal melee units useless late game?

No. Their job changes toward screening, interception, and protecting valuable ranged or support units. Asking them to absorb the whole wave alone is the problem.

Can I use a version 0.8.4 unit tier list for the full release?

Use it only as historical context. Verify current tooltips, faction bonuses, patch notes, and target interactions before adopting its ranking or numerical breakpoints.
