Unlock details changed during the 1.0 launch period. On September 21, 2026, the developer made Silas, Tiny, and Chunk slightly easier to unlock without publishing their new numerical requirements. Treat any precise community-only requirements for those three as unverified.

The answer before the background

Our recommendation

Emberward has nine standard characters: Feri, Silas the Merchant, Chunk the Builder, Tiny the Bot, Tana the Sorcerer, Belloc the Pyroguard, Chrono Traveler, Scrap Master, and Estelle the Astromancer. Joker is the special event character currently documented alongside them, making ten playable names in the 1.0 roster. Feri is available at the start. Silas, Chunk, Tiny, Tana, Belloc, and Chrono are achievement unlocks; Estelle requires 40 tower types in the Compendium; Scrap Master and Joker unlock after clearing all four original regions. The exact achievement objectives for several standard characters are not publicly stated by the developer, so do not rely on outdated guides that give unsupported numbers.

Every playable character currently documented

Characters change the rules or resources of a run rather than acting as cosmetic skins. You choose one before the adventure, then build towers, blocks, relics, and flames around that character's strengths. The roles below are practical descriptions based on official skills, achievements, and developer examples; they are not formal in-game classes.

  • Feri: The starting, general-purpose character. Use Feri to learn maze construction, tower placement, and the normal economy before committing to a specialist.
  • Silas the Merchant: The economy specialist. His achievement requires carrying 150 gold into the next stage, and official event examples associate him with coin-heavy gifts. He suits players who enjoy saving, timing purchases, and turning surplus gold into future power.
  • Chunk the Builder: The block and maze-shaping specialist. His achievement requires clearing a boss stage while every backpack block has a Mega Rune, while the developer has also shown Chunk supplying Mega Rune blocks in an event map. He is a natural choice for long, carefully engineered paths.
  • Tiny the Bot: The elemental and large-tower support specialist. Tiny has an achievement for building an elemental 3×3 tower with matching elemental buff tiles underneath it, so prioritize coherent elemental layouts rather than mixing every damage type.
  • Tana the Sorcerer: The buff-card specialist. Her achievement asks you to maintain five Overcharge buffs at once. Version 1.0 also made her buff-card distribution more even, reducing extreme luck swings.
  • Belloc the Pyroguard: The fire-source and quest-oriented character. The official 1.0 update removed his previous fire-source starting-HP penalty. His achievement rewards completing at least seven quests in one run and clearing the boss, making him a good fit for players who actively pursue objectives.
  • Chrono Traveler: The time-pressure specialist. Version 1.0 sets the first-round limit to 60 seconds and later rounds to 15 seconds. Pick Chrono if you are comfortable making fast build decisions and planning before the timer becomes restrictive.
  • Scrap Master: The mobile-machine specialist. Scrap Master pilots S.C.R.A.B.; official notes describe improved movement, freedom from enemy territory, and a five-second Focus Fire cooldown. Build around the machine when you want a compact, highly mobile defense.
  • Estelle the Astromancer: The broad-roster and tower-collection specialist. Her achievement requires having at least 25 different tower types on the field at once, so she rewards variety and careful positioning rather than a narrow single-element build.
  • Joker: The special event character. The official achievement list identifies Joker as the character for the no-gold tower-building challenge, while community records describe random block and tower behavior. Because the developer has not published a full skill description in the official patch notes, treat detailed Joker mechanics as version-sensitive.

Why some lists say nine

Nine is the count for the standard roster. Joker is classified separately as an event character, so guides may report nine normal characters or ten playable characters. Both counts can be correct when the category is stated.

A reliable order for opening the roster

Start by completing the training stage and using Feri to learn the basic loop. Then work through the achievement list naturally instead of farming one suspected requirement from an old guide. The game records character achievements in the Compendium, and the official Steam achievement list confirms the names of the main unlocks.

For Estelle, focus on collecting different tower types rather than repeatedly building the same favorite tower. The developer's official requirement is 40 tower types in the Compendium, and Estelle's own achievement later rewards using 25 different types in one stage. These are separate milestones.

For Scrap Master and Joker, clear all four original regions on any difficulty. The developer specifically confirmed that this unlocks both characters. Version 1.0 added Void Depths and changed progression for special-event content: Special Event Characters and Infernal Shards require completion of the entire game, so players who unlocked them during Early Access may need to clear Void Depths again.

  • Use Feri for early achievement cleanup and learning.
  • Collect tower variety for Estelle instead of chasing only damage upgrades.
  • Clear the first four regions before expecting Scrap Master or Joker.
  • After a patch, check the Compendium rather than trusting an old unlock number.
  • If an achievement appears to unlock incorrectly, restart the game and verify the character screen; post-launch fixes included achievement and translation corrections.

Verified versus inferred

The game exposes achievement names publicly, but not every hidden objective is reproduced in the official news posts. Where this guide gives a role such as economy, elemental support, or timed play, it is a practical interpretation of documented achievements and skills, not an official tier label.

Which hero should you pick first?

Choose Feri if you are still learning how block placement changes enemy routes. There is no drawback from spending time on the starter: the lessons carry over to every specialist, and early talents and tower knowledge matter more than forcing a complicated character.

Choose Silas when you understand when a defense is strong enough to save gold. His economy focus can feel awkward during early learning because spending less now may make the current wave harder, but the payoff is stronger later stages and more flexible shop decisions.

Choose Chunk if your enjoyment comes from solving the maze itself. Bigger or better-runed blocks can create impressive routes, but they also consume space, so avoid treating every large block as an automatic upgrade.

Choose Tiny for an elemental plan and Estelle for a broad collection of different tower types. Tana is best when you actively manage buff cards, while Chrono is for players who prefer speed and already know their opening placements.

Choose Belloc when you like quests and fire-focused runs. Choose Scrap Master when controlling a separate mobile unit sounds appealing. Leave Joker until you are comfortable with the basic economy, because its event rules are less conventional and its public documentation is thinner.

  • Best learning pick: Feri.
  • Best economy experiment: Silas.
  • Best maze-building experiment: Chunk.
  • Best elemental experiment: Tiny.
  • Best buff-focused experiment: Tana.
  • Best speed challenge: Chrono Traveler.
  • Best mobile-unit experiment: Scrap Master.
  • Best variety challenge: Estelle.

Named character questions

Common questions

How many characters are in Emberward?

The verified 1.0 list contains nine standard characters: Feri, Silas, Chunk, Tiny, Tana, Belloc, Chrono Traveler, Scrap Master, and Estelle. Joker is documented separately as a special event character, so the practical playable total is ten.

Is Joker a normal character or an event character?

Joker is treated as an event character. The official achievement list names Joker in the no-gold tower-building achievement, while the 1.0 announcement says Special Event Characters are tied to completing the full game. That is why some roster guides exclude Joker from the standard count.

How do you unlock Scrap Master?

Clear all four original regions on any difficulty. The developer confirmed this requirement directly in a Steam discussion. Scrap Master's playstyle centers on piloting S.C.R.A.B., a controllable machine that can host towers and use Focus Fire.

How do you unlock Estelle the Astromancer?

Collect 40 different tower types in the Compendium. The requirement was stated in the official v0.4.7 update notes. If a save is lost or corrupted, the Recover Save from Achievements setting can also restore Estelle's unlock data.

Were Silas, Tiny, and Chunk changed after launch?

Yes. On September 21, 2026, the developer said their unlock requirements had been made slightly easier. The exact replacement numbers were not included in the public post, so precise older requirements should not be presented as current facts.

Who is the best character for beginners?

Feri is the safest first pick because the character adds no specialist condition that you must manage. After that, choose based on your preferred decision type: Silas for gold, Chunk for maze design, Tiny for elemental setups, Tana for buffs, or Chrono for timed play.
