The answer before the background

Our recommendation

Install the game from Google Play by searching for Fallout Shelter and confirming that the publisher is Bethesda Softworks LLC. This is the recommended Android route because Play can filter the app for your device and provide normal updates. Do not treat a third-party APK or modded save as an equivalent download: it may be altered, incompatible with your phone, blocked by Play Protect, or capable of damaging your Vault. Before reinstalling, open Vault List and enable Cloud for each Vault you want to preserve.

How to download it from Google Play

Bethesda’s own support guidance directs Android players to Google Play. Open the Play Store app, search for Fallout Shelter, and select the listing whose publisher is Bethesda Softworks LLC. You can also open the official listing in a browser and continue the installation on a signed-in Android device.

Before tapping Install, check the publisher name, screenshots, content rating, reviews, and update information. The current listing identifies the game as a free-to-play simulation with advertisements and optional in-app purchases. It also describes the game as playable offline, although the store, cloud backup, updates, and purchases still need an internet connection at appropriate times.

  • Open Google Play Store.
  • Search for Fallout Shelter.
  • Confirm the publisher is Bethesda Softworks LLC.
  • Tap Install or Update.
  • Launch the game and create or restore a Vault.
  • Enable Cloud in Vault List before changing phones or uninstalling.

Publisher check

The name Fallout Shelter is not enough by itself. Check that the listing says Bethesda Softworks LLC. A similarly named app, unofficial mirror, or separate regional product is not a verified substitute.

What to do when the store will not install it

There is no single Android-version promise in Bethesda’s download article. Google Play uses your device configuration, operating-system version, hardware features, region, and certification status to determine whether an app can be installed. If the listing says your device is incompatible, treat that message as the first compatibility result rather than forcing an APK onto the phone.

Check for Android system updates, Google Play system updates, and an update to Google Play services. Also confirm that the device is Play Protect certified in Play Store under your profile, Settings, and About. Uncertified, rooted, or heavily modified devices may have broken app features, unreliable backups, or installation problems.

  • Update Android and Google Play services.
  • Restart the phone and retry the installation.
  • Check available storage and remove incomplete downloads.
  • Confirm the device is Play Protect certified.
  • Use the official store listing rather than a copied APK when compatibility is uncertain.
  • If the phone is rooted or running a custom ROM, test on an unmodified certified device before blaming the game.

Update will not installCheck storage, Play services, and whether an older sideloaded build is installed.Install a different unsigned or modified package over it.
Compatibility uncertainty

A sideloaded package can appear to install and still fail at launch because it has the wrong architecture, split-package components, signature, permissions, or game data. A successful APK installation is not proof that the device is supported.

Are third-party APKs, cheats, and mods safe?

No third-party Fallout Shelter APK should be treated as official merely because its filename contains the game’s name or a version number. Bethesda’s Android download guidance points to Google Play, and the official store listing is the verifiable publisher route. Google Play Protect also scans apps installed from outside the store, but a scan is a safety layer, not a guarantee that an altered game is trustworthy or that it will preserve your saves.

Searches for cheats android, mods android, or a save editor often lead to modified packages or tools that request broad access to files, accessibility controls, notifications, or account information. Those requests are warning signs for a game that does not need them. Never disable Play Protect just to install a mod, and do not enter your Google or Bethesda credentials into an APK site.

  • Prefer the official store build.
  • Keep Play Protect enabled.
  • Scan any already-downloaded file before opening it, and delete it if Android warns you.
  • Do not grant unrelated permissions to a game or save tool.
  • Back up your Vault before testing any unofficial modification.
  • Expect unofficial changes to stop working after an update.

What Play Protect can and cannot do

Play Protect can warn about or remove harmful software, including apps installed from outside Google Play. It cannot certify that a mod is fair, that a save editor is accurate, or that an altered APK will work with the current store build.

Cloud backup, save location, and Android to iOS moves

To back up a mobile Vault, open Fallout Shelter, go to Vault List, and select the Cloud checkbox for the save slot. Bethesda says cloud backup can be enabled on Android and iOS. To restore it, open Vault List on the target mobile device, select the matching Cloud checkbox, and choose the cloud save when a conflict prompt appears.

This is not a universal cross-platform account system. Bethesda explicitly says Vaults cannot be transferred between Android, iOS, and PC. Therefore, fallout shelter android to ios is not a supported direct migration path, even if both devices use the same email address or Bethesda account.

Bethesda’s public support instructions do not provide a single guaranteed Android save-location path for every phone and Android release. Modern Android storage restrictions, manufacturer file managers, app data permissions, and whether the device is rooted can change what is visible. Do not delete the app or clear its data while looking for a file unless you already have a confirmed cloud backup.

  • Back up each important Vault from Vault List.
  • Wait for the cloud option to finish before uninstalling.
  • Restore on another supported mobile device through Vault List.
  • Do not expect Android saves to appear automatically on iOS or PC.
  • Avoid editing or moving files whose location and format you cannot verify.

Protect an Android VaultEnable Cloud in Vault List. The backup must be enabled for the relevant save slot.
Move Android to iOSCreate a new Vault on iOS or continue only where the game offers a compatible cloud save.Bethesda says cross-platform Vault transfer is not possible.
Find the local saveUse the device’s supported app-data tools only after backing up.The visible path varies, and app data may be inaccessible without special permissions.
Recover after reinstallInstall the official build, open Vault List, and restore the cloud copy.Bethesda Support says it cannot restore Vaults for you.
Save-loss warning

Cloud backup is a safeguard, not a promise that every recent action has uploaded. Close the game normally, verify the Cloud option for the correct slot, and keep an independent backup only if you understand the risks of accessing local app data.

Fix a crash or loading screen on Android

Bethesda has published Android support guidance for both launch crashes and loading failures. The first step is to update Fallout Shelter, because Bethesda has marked reported crash and loading issues as resolved by updates. If the store offers Update, install it before clearing data or reinstalling.

If the app still crashes or remains stuck, force-close it, restart the device, install pending Android updates, and confirm that the phone is compatible. Reinstall only after backing up your Vault through Vault List. Clearing app data without a verified backup can remove local saves.

  • Update the game from Google Play.
  • Force-close the app and restart the phone.
  • Update Android and Google Play services.
  • Check that the device is Play Protect certified and has free storage.
  • Try again on a stable connection if the problem occurs during cloud access or an update.
  • Back up the Vault, then reinstall the official store build.
  • Contact Bethesda Support if the problem affects a specific Vault after these steps.

Version-aware caution

Bethesda’s support pages identify fixes and recommended steps, but they do not guarantee that every phone, custom ROM, APK variant, or corrupted Vault will recover. Record your device model, Android version, game build, and exact error before contacting support.

Common questions

Where is the official Android download?

Use the Google Play listing for Fallout Shelter published by Bethesda Softworks LLC. Bethesda’s support page directs Android players to Google Play rather than to a standalone APK download.

Can I install an APK if Google Play says my phone is incompatible?

You can sometimes sideload an APK, but that does not make the device supported. The package may lack required components, use the wrong architecture, fail to update, or damage local saves. Update the device and check Play Protect certification first.

Does the game have official Android cheats or mods?

No official Bethesda cheat APK, mod package, or save editor is identified in the publisher’s Android download and support guidance. Treat websites promising unlimited resources or free purchases as high risk.

Can I move my Vault from Android to iOS?

No. Bethesda says Vaults cannot be transferred between Android, iOS, and PC. Cloud backup supports mobile save backup and restoration, but it is not a cross-platform migration system.

What should I do if it is stuck on the loading screen?

Update the app first, then force-close it and restart the device. Check Android and Play services updates, confirm compatibility, and reinstall only after enabling Cloud backup for the affected Vault.
