The answer before the background

Our recommendation

For a dependable all-purpose build, use a fully upgraded classic shark with balanced Bite, Speed, and Boost, then equip one stamina or food-value baby plus gadgets that improve mobility or safe clearing. For progression, spend first on Bite, then Speed, and leave Boost for the final upgrades unless you frequently die while escaping. For high scores, choose a shark with strong area control or mobility, add a fish-spawn or Gold bonus baby, and use Gold Rush-friendly accessories. Special sharks are better when their unique power matches the task, but they are not flexible build platforms because normal items cannot be equipped.

How the build system works

Hungry Shark Evolution has two practical build layers: the shark itself and the equipment screen. The shark shop exposes three upgrade paths: Bite, Speed, and Boost. Bite improves how confidently you can attack larger or more dangerous prey; Speed makes feeding routes and escapes easier; Boost helps you cross danger zones, chase prey, and maintain momentum during a run.

Classic sharks are the flexible class. They progress through the normal shark chain, grow as they eat, and can use accessories and gadgets. Ubisoft lists five equipment slots for classic sharks: fin, neck, nose, eye, and head. Items can provide points, speed, gold, survivability, or a special function, but some occupy the same slot and cannot be worn together.

Special sharks are the power-focused class. They include unusual hybrids with abilities such as electric attacks, freezing, invisibility, flight, or phasing through hazards. Their trade-off is important: they can be purchased independently of the classic progression, but they cannot equip normal items and return to their starting size after a session. In other words, choose a special shark for its skill, not for a customizable loadout.

  • Verified core stats: Bite, Speed, and Boost.
  • Classic sharks: growth, upgrades, and equipment flexibility.
  • Special sharks: fixed powers, limited equipment, and session-based size.
  • Shark evolutions can add levels and improve certain stats, but requirements differ by shark.

Verified versus recommended

The class descriptions and available stat buttons are verified by Ubisoft support. The upgrade order below is a recommendation based on how each stat supports survival, movement, and scoring; Ubisoft does not publish a universal best order.

Progression and first-clear route

Use this route while unlocking larger sharks and learning the map. Start with Bite upgrades until you can reliably eat the prey that blocks your route. Add Speed next so you can reach food before the hunger timer becomes a problem and retreat from submarines, mines, or stronger sharks. Finish with Boost unless your deaths mainly happen during escapes.

Equip a baby that directly improves consistency. Stamina bonuses are the safest choice for new or under-upgraded sharks because they extend the time between feeding mistakes. If you are comfortable staying fed, use a baby that increases fish spawning or food value instead. The official support list includes examples such as Lepreshark Baby for increased fish spawning, Bat Baby for extra food value per kill, and Zephyr Baby for longer boosting.

For gadgets, mobility is usually more valuable than a narrow damage effect while progressing. Jetpack improves access to airborne prey and escape options, while Laser can stun prey from a distance and award extra points when that prey is eaten. Use Shark Vortex when your shark is already large enough to benefit from its wider collection radius.

  • Upgrade Bite until the next route tier feels safe.
  • Add Speed before buying luxury score equipment.
  • Use stamina when learning; use fish-spawn or food-value effects when farming.
  • Prefer Jetpack, Laser, or Shark Vortex according to the route you actually play.
PriorityWhat to chooseWhy
1Bite upgradesMakes dangerous prey and blockers less punishing
2Speed upgradesImproves feeding, travel, and escape timing
3Boost upgradesAdds control once basic survival is reliable
4Utility equipmentConverts spare resources into safer runs
Practical checkpoint

Do not buy every accessory as soon as it appears. Save coins and gems for items that solve a repeated problem: running out of food, missing airborne prey, failing to escape, or losing Gold Rush chains.

Long survival and high-score route

For survival, build around uptime rather than maximum burst damage. A stamina baby is the clearest starting point, especially when matched with a shark-specific companion. Ubisoft documents several +45% stamina babies, including Jira Chan, Flea Baby, Baby Abyss, Baby Boris, and Baby Sharksen, although some are tied to particular sharks or ownership requirements. Check the in-game description before spending gems.

For scoring, fish density and gold are more valuable than a small theoretical damage increase if they let you maintain a continuous feeding chain. Lepreshark Baby raises fish spawning according to Ubisoft’s support description. King Baby adds extra Gold per session, while Pirate Baby turns edible targets into gold but does not affect Gold Rushes. These effects serve different routes: fish density supports longer chains, while gold bonuses support currency farming.

A score-oriented classic build should include a gadget that keeps prey within reach or creates safer collection windows. Shark Vortex is useful when its radius matches the shark’s size. Laser is a strong option for controlled kills and distance safety. Jetpack is best when your route regularly includes birds, paragliders, or vertical movement. Do not combine items solely because they sound powerful; select the setup that keeps your shark eating without entering unnecessary danger.

  • Survival: stamina first, then food value or defensive utility.
  • High score: fish spawning, Gold bonuses, and Gold Rush uptime.
  • Currency farming: gold-focused effects are more relevant than raw points.
  • Mobility gadgets are strongest when the map route actually uses them.

About the best build

There is no single best build for every run. A score build, a currency build, and a first-clear build reward different effects, and special sharks can outperform classic sharks only when their fixed ability suits the objective.

Skill-focused shark choices

Choose a special shark when its ability removes the main obstacle in your run. Electric Shark is a direct combat option, Ice Shark provides freezing, Pyro Shark adds flight and fire-based attacks, and Ghost Shark can pass through walls and ignore many enemy threats. Sharkeleon is useful when copying or absorbing elemental abilities is more valuable than carrying equipment.

Among classic sharks, select for the route rather than the name alone. Ubisoft’s official descriptions identify useful role differences: Mako Shark is faster and stronger than the entry-level Reef Shark, Tiger Shark emphasizes jaw power and enemy resistance, Moby Dick can stun nearby enemies in specific boosted situations, Leo can break rocks and move on land without health penalties, and Nessie uses portals that can create a fish-filled Wormhole during Gold Rush.

These are abilities, not a formal competitive ranking. The game does not provide a developer-maintained tier list or complete public stat sheet. Treat community rankings as opinions unless they show reproducible tests on the same platform and update.

  • Use elemental or defensive special powers to solve a specific hazard.
  • Use classic sharks when you need equipment customization.
  • Pick Leo for routes involving rocks or land movement.
  • Pick Nessie when portal and Gold Rush routing is central to the run.

Common questions

What are the three main stats?

The shark shop lists Bite, Speed, and Boost. Ubisoft confirms these are the three upgradeable shark stats, but it does not publish a complete numeric formula for each level.

What is the best build for beginners?

Use a classic shark, upgrade Bite first and Speed second, then equip a stamina-oriented baby. Add Jetpack or Laser only when the map route benefits from them. This is safer and more flexible than choosing a special shark only for its appearance.

Can special sharks use accessories and babies?

Ubisoft states that special sharks cannot equip normal items. The support pages describe babies as equipment alongside a normal playable shark, so do not assume a special shark can use every baby or gadget unless the game allows it in your current version.

Should I prioritize Speed or Boost?

Prioritize Speed for feeding routes and general control. Prioritize Boost earlier if you routinely die while escaping, crossing hazards, or chaining Gold Rush movement. For most progression runs, Bite first and Speed second is the more consistent route.

Are shark tier lists reliable?

They can be useful for opinions and playstyle comparisons, but they are not an official ranking. Patch changes, platform differences, item availability, and personal route choices can change the result, so test a recommended shark against your actual goal.
