The answer before the background

Our recommendation

The main story roster centers on Kiyan, Eara, Portia, Azad, Darius, Shin, Alexander, Cornette, and several supporting characters. Kiyan is the permanent player hero; Eara is a major non-playable story character; Portia and Azad temporarily join during the campaign. Recruitable allies come from Mercenary Emblems and belong to six classes: Black Knight, Assassin, Warlock, Priest, Ranger, and Warrior. The named mercenaries are the rare targets to keep, but exact rates and a complete monster drop table are not officially published.

Main story characters and playable allies

Kiyan is the central protagonist and the character you control throughout the campaign. He is introduced as an Assassin from the Shadow Tribe, although the game’s class system lets the player build him around the Assassin skill tree and equipment rules. Older translations may spell his name as Kian.

Eara, also called the Channel of Light, is the other central figure. She is important to the plot but is not a standard recruitable party member. Her role is story-driven rather than emblem-driven, so searching for an Eara Mercenary Emblem will not produce her.

The most important temporary allies are Portia and Azad. Portia is a high-ranking Shadow Tribe character who is later revealed to have ties to the Djinn. She temporarily joins the party and is associated with the Warlock class. Azad is a powerful temporary companion connected to Kiyan’s past and is associated with the Black Knight class.

Other named story figures include Darius, the Shadow Tribe vice-leader; Shin, Eara’s protector; Alexander, a Berkel Empire commander; Cornette, one of the Arnen Chasers; Cardinal Janus; the Veteran, also identified in references as Lucio; the Carp Sage; and Olaf. These characters support quests, exposition, or boss encounters rather than functioning as ordinary permanent recruits.

  • Permanent player hero: Kiyan.
  • Major story character: Eara.
  • Temporary playable companions: Portia and Azad.
  • Story and quest figures: Darius, Shin, Alexander, Cornette, Cardinal Janus, Veteran or Lucio, Carp Sage, and Olaf.

Roster limitation

The game contains many unnamed NPCs, enemies, and quest characters. The list above focuses on named characters relevant to the party, campaign, and character-database questions.

The six mercenary classes

Mercenaries are the game’s main repeatable party system. They can gain levels, use equipment, learn class skills, and be placed in or removed from the active party. Their class determines their broad role, but individual skill rolls and passives mean two recruits of the same class can perform differently.

Black Knights are front-line defensive fighters. They are the natural choice when the party needs durability, armor support, or a character who can hold enemy attention. Warriors are also combat-focused, usually emphasizing direct physical damage and two-handed weapon play.

Assassins are agile physical attackers with critical-hit and utility options. Rangers provide ranged physical damage and benefit from bow-focused builds. Warlocks supply magic damage and elemental or crowd-control tools. Priests provide healing and support, and their mercenary passives can improve party economy, experience, or recruitment quality.

For a first playthrough, a balanced group usually benefits from one durable front-liner, one Priest, and two damage dealers. A second defensive class is safer for difficult areas, while a second caster or Ranger can shorten routine fights. These are recommendations rather than fixed requirements; Kiyan’s own class and equipment should determine the final arrangement.

  • Black Knight: defensive front line and metal-armor support.
  • Warrior: direct physical damage and two-handed weapon focus.
  • Assassin: agile damage, critical hits, and utility.
  • Ranger: ranged physical damage and material-finding utility.
  • Warlock: magic damage and spell-based control.
  • Priest: healing, support, and valuable party passives.

Official class count

Com2uS describes the game as having six classes and 90 class skills. Some English store text omits Warrior from the displayed list, but the six-class mercenary roster consistently includes Warrior.

How emblems and named mercenaries work

Recruit mercenaries by using the corresponding emblem from the party or recruitment interface. Community documentation reports that emblems can come from monster drops, chests, and crooked street vendors. The official store listing confirms the recruitment system but does not publish a complete source-by-source table.

Shadow Mercenary Emblems are special early or story-linked items and are not the same as ordinary class emblems. Regular Mercenary Emblems are associated with a class, while Divine Mercenary Emblems are described as producing more skillful recruits. Hero Emblems are premium recruitment items and should not be confused with ordinary drops.

Named mercenaries are the rarest and most valuable recruits. Community references list two lower-tier named recruits and three rarer premium names for each class. A named recruit keeps a recognizable skill identity, but its numerical stats, skill maximums, and mercenary passives may vary. Do not dismiss one only because its first skill roll looks imperfect; inspect the full skill page before replacing it.

The Priest mercenary passive Celebrity is widely reported to improve the chance of obtaining rare mercenaries. This is a community observation, not a published Com2uS probability table. It is reasonable to use a Priest with Celebrity before opening valuable emblems, but exact odds should not be treated as verified.

  • Regular class emblems: ordinary class-specific recruitment.
  • Divine Mercenary Emblems: intended for more skillful recruits, but outcomes remain random.
  • Hero Emblems: premium recruitment items with stronger expected quality.
  • Celebrity: commonly reported to improve rare-mercenary recruitment odds.
  • Keep named recruits until their complete skills and passives have been checked.

Do not trust unverified percentages

Exact emblem odds, monster-specific drop rates, and claims about guaranteed named recruits are not confirmed by the official game listing. Treat online percentages as estimates unless a current developer source proves them.

Which recruits should you keep?

Early in the game, prioritize functional party coverage over rarity. A Priest with reliable healing can be more useful than a high-damage recruit who has poor survivability. Add a Black Knight or Warrior if Kiyan is built as a fragile Assassin, then fill the remaining slots with ranged or magical damage.

When a named mercenary appears, compare class, level, equipment compatibility, usable skills, maximum skill levels, and mercenary passives. Named status alone does not guarantee the best possible roll. A normal recruit with the right healing or control skill can still outperform a badly rolled rare recruit during the story.

Mercenaries continue to matter after the main campaign because Infinite Dungeon reuses the party system for harder fights. Store useful recruits rather than deleting them immediately, especially if they provide a passive that benefits the whole party. Confirm whether the passive applies while inactive before reorganizing your roster.

  • Build around a healer before chasing perfect rarity.
  • Use Black Knight or Warrior protection for fragile Kiyan builds.
  • Keep named mercenaries until every skill and passive is inspected.
  • Do not spend rare emblems based only on an unverified drop-rate claim.
  • Use Infinite Dungeon as the long-term test for your final roster.
QuestionBest practical answer
Best general support recruit?A Priest with dependable healing; Celebrity is a bonus for recruitment farming.
Best front liner?Black Knight for defense, or Warrior for more direct physical pressure.
Best damage class?Assassin, Ranger, or Warlock depending on enemy defenses and your equipment.
Should every rare recruit be kept?Keep it temporarily and inspect its full skill and passive roll first.
Recommendation versus fact

There is no universally confirmed strongest mercenary. Performance depends on skill rolls, equipment, level, party composition, and whether you are playing the story or Infinite Dungeon.

Common questions

How do I unlock mercenaries?

Use Mercenary Emblems through the party or recruitment interface. The emblem determines the available class or recruitment pool. Emblems are reported from monsters, chests, vendors, quests, and premium purchases, but the exact source and rate depend on the emblem type.

What is the Inotia 4 hero emblem?

A Hero Emblem is a premium recruitment item intended to produce a highly skilled mercenary. Community references describe random-class and class-specific versions, but current official pages do not publish a complete result table or guarantee a particular named recruit.

Are Portia and Azad permanent mercenaries?

No. Both are temporary story companions. Portia is associated with the Warlock class, while Azad is associated with Black Knight. They should not be confused with randomly recruited mercenaries bearing class emblems.

Who are the rare mercenaries?

The named recruits are the rare targets. Community lists identify five names for each of the six classes, including Clea and Rosarine for Black Knight, Rica and Morgana for Assassin, Enesse and Orbey for Priest, Loutch and Mares for Ranger, Lacroix and Exion for Warlock, and Duval and Krist for Warrior. The same references divide the names into different rarity tiers.

Is there a complete monster drop list?

No complete, current, reliably verified monster-by-monster list was found. Emblems are broadly associated with monster and chest rewards in community documentation, but exact monster tables and drop rates should be treated as unconfirmed unless tested against a current game build.

Is Eara playable?

Eara is a major story character and temporary narrative companion, not a normal permanent mercenary recruited through emblems. Kiyan remains the permanent player-controlled hero.
