Start with a compact core supply line: mine copper and lead, secure power, feed a basic turret, then add graphite, silicon, and metaglass production. Research conveyors, junctions, routers, drills, generators, and stronger defenses before rushing advanced units. When you need construction help, produce builder-capable units such as Poly; check the unit database for a Build Speed stat. Poly has 50% build speed, while Oct has 400% and also carries large payloads. If a unit cannot build, it usually lacks a build speed value, is banned by the map rules, or is being asked to perform a task outside its role.

Classes and skills: what the game actually uses

Mindustry does not use named player classes such as engineer, tank, or mage, and it does not have a conventional skill-point system. Your core, researched blocks, unit factories, schematics, and controlled unit determine your capabilities.

The useful equivalent is a role system. Blocks handle mining, transport, processing, power, defense, storage, and logistics. Units specialize in combat, mining, construction, repair, transport, or combinations of those jobs. This is why a good build is better understood as a route through the technology tree rather than a character build.

Unit stats are the practical skills to watch. Build Speed controls construction rate, Mine Speed affects extraction, Mine Tier determines which ores can be mined, Payload Capacity controls carried blocks or units, and abilities such as repair fields or shields add utility. The official UnitType reference also distinguishes build range from build speed, so a unit may reach a location without being able to construct anything.

Important distinction

A turret is a building, not a construction unit. Selecting a turret or combat unit does not make it a builder. Check the unit information screen for Build Speed before troubleshooting.

A dependable early build order

The safest opening is a layered route rather than a race to the strongest turret. First secure copper and lead near the core. Use drills and short conveyor runs, but avoid covering the entire base with transport before you have stable production.

Next, establish power and a small defensive perimeter. Place the first turret where it covers the most likely enemy approach, then add ammunition handling that cannot be cut off by a single destroyed conveyor. Store spare material near the defense line so a damaged section can be rebuilt quickly.

Once the immediate threat is controlled, research graphite and silicon production. Graphite improves many drills and weapons, while silicon unlocks more advanced electronics and combat options. Metaglass is the important liquid-and-storage branch; it supports liquid distribution and related infrastructure. Do not expand every branch at once. Build one dependable line, confirm that it is supplied, and then duplicate it.

After basic production is stable, add stronger power, more efficient drills, storage, and a second defensive layer. Only then should you commit to expensive units, large schematics, or high-tier turrets. This order keeps the base functional if a wave destroys one section.

Recommendation, not a hard rule

Maps with scarce copper, isolated ores, or an immediate boss threat require deviations. Pause the game when planning complicated layouts so you can place the route without losing production time.

Builder units, skills and useful stats

Poly is the most important early construction helper. The official unit page lists 50% build speed, 350% mine speed, and an ability that automatically rebuilds destroyed structures and assists other units. It is fast and inexpensive compared with later builders, so it is a strong first target when the map supports air production.

Oct is a late construction and support option. Its listed 400% build speed is substantially higher than Poly's, and it combines construction with a shield, repair field, and large payload capacity. That makes it valuable for rebuilding exposed defenses, moving structures, and supporting a push, although its production route is much more demanding.

Do not judge a unit only by health or weapon damage. A combat unit may survive near the front but contribute nothing to a damaged factory. Conversely, a builder may have modest weapons yet be the unit that keeps the whole base alive. Inspect build speed, mine speed, mine tier, payload capacity, abilities, and unit cap before choosing a route.

Why the numbers can differ

Rules can apply global multipliers to unit build speed, health, damage, mining, and cost. Custom maps and data patches may therefore produce different results from the vanilla database.

Why a unit cannot build

If the interface says a unit cannot build, check the unit's information page first. A genuine builder has a Build Speed value; the official data definition treats a negative value as disabled construction. This is the fastest way to separate a role limitation from a broken factory.

If the unit is a builder, check range, movement, obstruction, resource delivery, and team ownership. A plan can also be invalid because the location is occupied, the block is not researched, the map bans it, or the unit cannot reach the construction area. In logic-controlled games, the bound unit and its control commands add another possible failure point.

For a factory problem rather than a unit problem, inspect the unit factory's selected plan, input items, power, output space, unit cap, and any map restrictions. A factory can be researched yet still remain idle because one input or the required upgrade path is missing.

Common questions

Does Mindustry have classes or skill trees?

No. Vanilla Mindustry uses researched content, unit roles, block statistics, factory plans, and campaign progression instead of RPG classes and skill points.

Which unit should build structures first?

Poly is the usual early construction helper because it assists building and rebuilding while also mining quickly. Confirm its availability and cost in the current tech tree.

Why can my unit fight but not build?

Combat ability does not imply construction ability. Check the unit information screen for Build Speed. If the value is absent or disabled, that unit cannot build in vanilla play.

Is build 158 still the current version?

No. The official wiki currently lists version 159.7. Build 158 and earlier references can still be useful, but mechanics, balance, and content may differ.

What is the best general build order?

Secure copper and lead, add power and basic defense, unlock graphite and silicon, improve drills and transport, then expand into liquids, stronger defense, and builder units. Adapt the order when the map changes resource access or wave pressure.
