The answer before the background

Our recommendation

For a reliable first route, choose Crusader, take Smite as the foundation, and prioritize Damage, Weapon Skill Damage, Size, Amount, and defensive support. Add Study or Psychokinesis early so levels and pickups arrive consistently, then take Shield, Vitality, or Buckler when contact damage becomes the main threat. For a faster offensive route, use Quickling with projectile or movement-friendly skills and invest in Speed, Damage, Size, and Amount. For a defensive route, use Knight with Purifying Circle, Colorless Glyph, Shield, Vitality, Buckler, and Defense. The best results come from matching each class’s weapon skill to a small group of stats instead of trying to improve everything at once.

How the build system works

Nomad Survival is a time-based, auto-attacking roguelite in which each run combines a character, active skills, passive skills, permanent upgrades, and relic choices. The Steam store confirms that characters and skill combinations are central to progression, while the developer’s patch history confirms permanent upgrades such as Max HP, Defense, Damage, EXP Bonus, Pickup Range, Critical Rate, Critical Damage, Projectile Speed, Skill Size, Coin Bonus, and Weapon Skill Damage.

The game does not require a single rigid tier list. A skill’s value depends on the stats it can use and on whether your character’s weapon skill fills the same role. For example, Amount is valuable for projectile-heavy attacks, while Size and Duration are more important for persistent zones such as Purifying Circle. Weapon Skill Damage is a separate priority when your character’s signature ability is doing most of the work.

  • Early run priority: Damage, a reliable active skill, EXP support, and enough movement speed to avoid being surrounded.
  • Mid-run priority: specialize into the stats that affect your best two or three skills.
  • Late-run priority: survivability, critical scaling, cooldown or duration support, and weapon-skill damage where applicable.

Verified versus recommended

The stat effects and route priorities above combine documented upgrade names with practical recommendations. The game does not publish an official ranking for every class, so labels such as safest or fastest are recommendations, not developer-designated tiers.

Choose the character that matches your route

The community reference lists nine selectable characters: Adventurer, Crusader, Cultist, Ratfolk Archer, The Divine, The Quickling, Necromancer, Knight, and Whisperer. Their exact starting values and unlock conditions are not fully documented on the official store page, so the safest comparison uses the character abilities that are explicitly recorded and then tests the result in the in-game stats screen.

Crusader is the strongest recommendation for a first serious run. Its Smite weapon skill creates multiple projectiles and a persistent damaging aura, and its level milestones increase projectile count and aura size. Build around Damage, Size, Amount, and knockback support, then add Defense or Shield when enemies begin reaching you.

Knight is the defensive specialist. Provoke draws enemies in faster, halves movement speed during the effect, doubles Defense, deals damage based on incoming damage, and restores health from enemies hit. This makes Defense, Max HP, Buckler, Vitality, Bravery, and area damage natural partners. Do not overinvest in movement speed if you are deliberately using Provoke as your main damage window.

The Quickling suits players who prefer constant repositioning. Its Speed Unlimited ability transforms the character, damages enemies on contact, grants substantial damage reduction, increases speed, and leaves a damaging trail. Favor movement speed, Damage, Size, Duration, and defensive effects that protect you between transformations.

The Divine is a burst specialist. Empyreal Obliteration temporarily removes control, damages enemies, and grants invulnerability during and shortly after casting, but SP cannot be gained while invincible. Pair it with SP regeneration, Weapon Skill Damage, Damage, and enough ordinary active skills to cover the periods between casts.

  • Use Crusader when you want the least complicated all-round route.
  • Use Knight when surviving contact and retaliation matter more than speed.
  • Use Quickling when movement is part of your damage plan.
  • Use The Divine when you are comfortable timing burst windows and managing SP.

The remaining characters are valid choices, but the available public evidence is not detailed enough to assign them a definitive ranking here. Check their in-game description and weapon skill before committing to a route.

Three practical build routes

A good run has stages. During the opening levels, take the first dependable damage skill offered rather than waiting for a perfect combination. Secure EXP or pickup support soon afterward, because a powerful late-game plan is useless if it levels too slowly. Once one offensive skill clearly outperforms the others, make later choices support it instead of adding unrelated damage types.

For a projectile route, combine a high-value projectile skill with Duplication or Archery. Magic Missile, Chain Lightshock, Spectral Bow, Fireball, and similar attacks can benefit from Amount, Size, or Projectile Speed depending on the skill. Do not assume every stat affects every attack; the community skill list identifies which attributes each skill uses.

For an area-control route, choose persistent or sweeping attacks and scale Size, Duration, and Damage. Purifying Circle is especially suitable because its documented upgrades improve duration, cooldown, base damage, and attack rate, while Amount cannot modify it. Colorless Glyph also rewards Size but does not provide knockback, so pair it with another skill that creates space.

For a weapon-skill route, select Stamina Potion when SP regeneration is relevant, and take Weapon Skill Damage from permanent upgrades or relic effects when available. This route is strongest when the character’s signature ability has a clear combat purpose; otherwise, ordinary active skills should remain your main source of consistent damage.

  • Levels 1–10: secure one damage skill, one pickup or EXP tool, and one survival option.
  • Levels 11–25: complete the main offensive scaling package before taking luxury passives.
  • After the core is complete: fill gaps with Defense, Max HP, movement speed, critical stats, or SP regeneration.
  • If a skill does not benefit from your chosen stat package, stop upgrading that package and diversify deliberately.
StageWhat to seekWhat to avoid
OpeningReliable damage, Study, Psychokinesis, movementTaking several weak skills at once
MiddleAmount, Size, Duration, or Projectile Speed for the main carrySpreading upgrades across incompatible skills
EndgameDefense, Shield, Vitality, critical scaling, SP supportIgnoring survival because damage looks high
Map and challenge adjustment

The developer reduced enemy and boss HP on the fourth map in Patch 1.6.4 and later fixed a Challenge II issue in October 2023. That means older community advice may describe a harsher version of the final map, but the core build principles remain applicable.

Common build mistakes

The most common error is choosing attractive passives without checking what they improve. Duplication is not automatically correct for every skill, and Size is not a substitute for Damage when enemies have high health. Read the skill description, pause to inspect your general stats, and watch which attacks are actually clearing enemies.

Another mistake is treating defense as wasted damage. On harder maps, a Shield proc, Buckler investment, or Vitality pickup can preserve the run long enough for your offensive scaling to mature. A slightly slower build that reaches the boss consistently is usually better than a fragile build that dies before its late-game upgrades matter.

Finally, do not copy a route without checking the character’s signature ability. Spectral Sword, for example, mirrors weapon-skill upgrades but does not reproduce every secondary effect. Similar exceptions are why the in-game description should take priority over a generic tier list.

  • Pause after a level-up to confirm which stats your current skills use.
  • Keep at least one reliable way to create space: knockback, movement, a zone, or invulnerability.
  • Use relic rerolls for a coherent plan rather than trying to rescue several unrelated skills.
  • When testing an unfamiliar character, record the weapon skill, SP requirement, level milestones, and whether it benefits from Amount, Size, Duration, or Projectile Speed.

Common questions

What is the best beginner character?

Crusader is the safest recommendation because Smite supplies both projectiles and a persistent aura, while its level milestones increase projectile count and aura size. It remains useful even when your level-up choices are not perfect.

Should I prioritize Damage or Weapon Skill Damage?

Prioritize Damage when ordinary active skills are carrying the run. Prioritize Weapon Skill Damage when the character’s signature ability is reliable, frequent, and central to your route. If you are unsure, take general Damage first and add weapon-skill scaling after the build is stable.

Is Knight actually good on difficult maps?

Yes, if you build around Provoke instead of trying to play Knight like a fast ranged character. Defense, healing, Max HP, area damage, and retaliation support its grouping mechanic. Movement speed is less important during the ability’s active window.

Which passive skills are broadly useful?

Study and Psychokinesis improve the run’s economy, while Shield, Vitality, and Buckler provide dependable survival. Enchantment is a straightforward damage choice. More specialized passives such as Duplication, Hourglass, Expansion, Archery, Bullseye, and Primal Might are best when your active skills clearly benefit from them.

Are these rankings official?

No. The developer publishes the game and patch notes but does not provide an official class tier list. The character descriptions and skill effects are evidence-led; the recommended rankings and routes are practical recommendations based on those effects.
