The answer before the background

Our recommendation

Start with Helga if you want a dependable learning route, Thyra for straightforward ranged damage, or Amaranth once you can support a summon-focused run. Build Hansi around critical chance and critical damage, Lorcan around Luck and percentage effects, Talkor around gold generation and damage scaling, and Yggdrasil progression around permanent upgrades that fix each survivor’s early weakness. Do not spread upgrades across every damage type: choose one primary relic family, add defensive stats, then fill the remaining slots with coverage or boss damage.

How survivor classes actually work

Nordic Ashes presents survivors rather than conventional selectable classes. In practice, each survivor is a class-like package built from a signature passive, a starting weapon or relic pool, a constellation and a set of character relics. A successful run normally has three layers: the survivor’s innate rule, the relics chosen during level-ups, and permanent Yggdrasil upgrades.

For the first minutes, choose reliable area damage and movement or defensive stats before chasing a perfect synergy. A build that kills one target quickly can still fail if it cannot clear enemies from several directions. Once your main relic is upgraded, add cooldown, attack speed, damage, critical chance, status chance, status duration, area, projectile count or experience according to the route you selected.

  • Use one primary damage identity rather than mixing unrelated relic families.
  • Treat healing, hearts, movement and defensive upgrades as damage-enabling tools because surviving longer creates more level-ups.
  • Ascend the relics that define the route before spending resources on minor improvements.
  • Use Relic Ban when available to remove options that do not support the intended build.

AmaranthSummoned creatures deal more damage, while other relic damage is reduced.Commit to Ivy, Chilli, Skog, Peasprout or Lingon, then add green-heart scaling and summon damage.
HansiEnemies can drop Shadow Orbs that grant critical chance, up to five charges; damage removes charges when hit.Stack critical chance, critical damage and safe positioning.
HelgaHalf red hearts increase stats according to the current zodiac rune.Collect hearts and let the active zodiac direction determine whether to favor damage, cooldown, area or defense.
LorcanLuck gives extra rolls for percentage-based attacks and effects, with periodic Lucky Rolls.Prioritize Luck, then effects that benefit from repeated percentage checks.
TalkorGold functions as health and powers his economy-centered playstyle.Generate gold, protect it through movement and defense, then scale gold-based damage.
ThyraStarts with an extra projectile and increased movement speed.Build projectile count, attack speed, area and ranged coverage; status effects are a useful secondary route.
Naming note

The survivor is officially named Talkor, although searches and player discussions sometimes call him Talker. The same distinction applies to “class” terminology: the game’s playable units are survivors, but their kits behave like classes.

A practical route for new and established accounts

For a new account, use Helga or Thyra to learn enemy patterns and realm layouts. Spend early constellation resources on consistent damage, survivability and the ability to reach relic upgrades. After that, move to Amaranth for a focused summon run or Hansi for a critical run. These characters teach the value of committing to a build identity rather than collecting every attractive option.

For established accounts, test specialist routes on higher difficulties after the relevant character relics are unlocked and ascended. Amaranth benefits most when the run can maintain green hearts and field several summons. Hansi benefits from avoiding damage so Shadow Orbs remain active. Lorcan and Talkor are more dependent on permanent progression and can feel underpowered if their economy or Luck support is incomplete.

Yggdrasil progression should fill gaps rather than simply add more damage. If a survivor dies before the build comes online, buy early-run consistency, healing, rerolls, starting resources or defensive support where available. If the survivor already survives comfortably, then push the permanent bonuses that multiply the chosen route. This is why a Yggdrasil build should be viewed as a support plan for a survivor build, not as one universal tree.

  • Learning route: Helga or Thyra, then Amaranth.
  • Critical route: Hansi with critical chance, critical damage and safe movement.
  • Summon route: Amaranth with summons, green hearts and summon damage.
  • Luck route: Lorcan with Luck and frequent percentage-based effects.
  • Economy route: Talkor with gold generation, defense and gold scaling.
  • Permanent progression route: Yggdrasil upgrades that solve the chosen survivor’s early weakness.

Common questions

What is the easiest survivor to build?

Helga is the most forgiving generalist because her heart-based stat gains adapt to the current zodiac rune. Thyra is also approachable because extra projectiles and movement speed make ranged kiting easy to understand.

What is the best Amaranth build?

Use a summon-only or summon-dominant route. Prioritize her plant and creature relics, then add green-heart generation and summon damage. Her innate penalty makes unrelated relic damage less attractive.

How should I make a Hansi critical build?

Collect Shadow Orbs without taking unnecessary hits, then stack critical chance, critical damage and reliable area coverage. Add defensive movement tools so the critical bonus is not repeatedly lost.

Is there a universal best build?

No. Results change with difficulty, relic ascension, constellation progress, Yggdrasil upgrades, available unlocks and DLC. A route that is excellent for one survivor can be inefficient for another.

Should I use a bleed build on every survivor?

No. Bleed is a status-focused option, not a universal solution. Choose it when the run offers reliable status application and then support it with status chance, duration and damage.

Why does Talkor feel weak at the start?

His gold is both his health and a major part of his scaling, so early damage or missed economy effects can hurt twice. Permanent Yggdrasil support and a cautious gold-first route make him much more consistent.
