The answer before the background

Our recommendation

Prioritize the boss mechanic before damage. In Pirate Bay, bring status-changing cards for Fragile, Dodge, and Rage fights. In Skulls Island, prepare for curses, reviving remains, and undead enemies. Against Souls Rift spirits, use skills, Bleeding, or Precision Strike because some spirit forms resist ordinary attacks. In Arena, expect a champion every 10 rounds and build for the next boss rather than the current battle. Quest rewards are generally fixed at 1,000 gold and 200 Repute, plus a named card, relic, or package; ordinary bosses instead lead to the normal loot selection.

How boss encounters work

Navigate bosses appear at the end of map stages, but the exact boss is selected from that stage’s boss pool. Common quests can require defeating every boss in a map, while hero quests create special multi-enemy encounters or send you to a particular Arena level.

The Arena is separate from normal map progression. It unlocks at 500 Repute, contains 100 rounds, and places a champion on every tenth round. Winning a round gives the usual Loot choice or one of two additional random actions, so Arena runs reward flexible decks and careful resource management.

  • Use burst damage against summoners, gunners, and bosses that scale over time.
  • Keep at least one way to remove or replace a status effect. Blind, Weakened, Fragile, Dodge, Injury, Mark, and curses are frequent boss checks.
  • Do not assume a lackey is optional. Several bosses are protected while their minions live, or become much more dangerous when minions die.

Evidence note

The official store page confirms 16 heroes, more than 700 cards, 200 relics, 150-plus outlaws, and 60-plus unique bosses. Exact move patterns and quest routes below come from the community wiki, which is useful but not an official balance reference.

Key enemies and reliable counters

Pirates Bay is the best place to learn boss fundamentals. Stage 1 includes Gargantua, Hankor, and Red Bear. Hankor charges a heavy attack, so Shield, Dodge, Blind, or a status-changing card is more valuable than another small attack. Red Bear becomes much more dangerous below half health: remove his initial minion quickly, then save damage and defense for his Rage phase.

Stage 2 includes Baraky, the Huldin Brothers, and Ed’hog. Baraky’s attack is based on his armor, so high-damage cards and armor-punishing effects are excellent. The Huldin Brothers apply Injury and punish repeated low-damage hits; use hard-hitting attacks, healing, or status immunity. Stage 3 includes Blackbeard Rogers, La Comandante, and Roly-Poly. Blackbeard’s chest heals him, but destroying it gives him Rage and useful consumables, so plan to burst through the second phase rather than slowly chip him down.

Skulls Island emphasizes curses and undead rules. Priestess can repeatedly bring back a skeleton, while Kezalkoatl adds Chronic Illness curses that reduce maximum health. The Gravedigger cannot be damaged normally while his lackeys remain, and the Sentinels heal each other until one is killed. Bring curse control, fast finishing damage, and a way to handle remains before they revive.

Souls Rift bosses often test defense and deck control. The Spirit quest boss has low-health lackeys and Dodge, while the main Spirit increases the damage of all spirits over time. Skills, Bleeding, and Precision Strike are recommended because they can affect spirit forms when ordinary attacks cannot. The Kraken is an optional long fight with 999 health: pursue it only with reliable healing, armor, or sustained damage.

  • For summoners, decide whether killing minions helps or triggers a worse phase. La Comandante and the Gravedigger require special attention to their protection rules.
  • For undead fights, prioritize cards that remove curses and finish revived remains quickly.
  • For the Kraken, protect yourself through the low-damage turns and kill its tentacle before the curse pressure becomes unmanageable.

Champions and quest encounters

Arena bosses become more demanding because every tenth round is a fixed checkpoint. Unknown Slave adds Chain and can combine Rage with Fragile. Lucy Weston gains Dodge each turn and can apply Injury, so status-changing cards are important. The Impostor brings a Swordsman lackey, curses, and a transformation below half health. These fights reward flexible answers more than a single damage plan.

Several hero quests use boss-style battles rather than ordinary stage bosses. The Chicken quest is one of the hardest: it eventually asks you to defeat Swordmaster and Gunner in Pirates Bay, Carpenter, Cursed Captain, and Explorer in Skulls Island, Inventor and Alchemist in Souls Rift, Carpenter, Bear Tamer, and Fortune Teller in Lost Islands, then Vigilante and Doctor at Arena level 42. Gunner should usually die first because of his burst damage; against Fortune Teller, remember that her Tarot charges mean she must be defeated multiple times.

The Doctor quest requires curing Coco at Arena 40 and Sleepy Hollow at Arena 80. The Swordmaster quest begins by defeating Lucy Weston at Arena 20, taking Burned Key, and carrying it into a Pirates Bay run. These are encounter conditions, not optional flavor events, so abandon a run only when the required route becomes impossible.

  • Before a hero quest, favor reliable damage and defense over narrow synergies that need several rare cards.
  • Against Chicken-quest teams, kill Carpenter before his damage escalates and remember that Cursed Captain’s skill damage ignores Dodge and Blind.
  • Against Vigilante and Doctor, control Doctor’s maximum-health reduction and expect Doctor to revive after defeat.

Conditions, drops, and route checks

Quest rewards are more predictable than ordinary boss loot. A Reputed Pirate requires three food-type relics traded to the Merchant in Pirate Bay Stage 3, then a new Pirate Bay run to find the chest and defeat the stranger. Its reward is Vigilante, with 500 gold and 100 Repute. Food relics include Grapes, Apple, Bread, Crab Pincer, Rum, Cheese, and Pepper; the community reference says Disgusting Egg and Beer Mug do not count.

Malediction requires collecting the Cursed Book in Skulls Island and defeating the 300-health Undead Captain. It awards the Cursed Book relic, 1,000 gold, and 200 Repute. Awakening requires Malediction first, then a shipwreck route with 15 opponents across five groups before the same Undead Captain fight; its reward is Sacred Book.

For the Admiral quest, follow the event choices in this order: Pirate Bay, Pirate Bay, Lost Islands, then Eastern Seas. It leads to three boss battles and one normal battle, with Red Coin, 1,000 gold, and 200 Repute as the listed reward. For Gunner, buy information from the Fisherman for 50 coins, clear three enemy waves at Stage 2, and defeat Unknown Captain at Stage 3 to receive Instant Order.

The Alchemist quest requires four Emerald cards to be carried into Souls Rift. Fuse them at the marked events rather than in a tavern, collect Sapphire and Ruby during the failed fusions, then choose to fuse at Stage 3. The final enemies are immune to melee damage, and the reward is Unstable Stone and Philosopher’s Stone, plus 1,000 gold and 200 Repute.

  • If a quest says to carry relics or cards, do not spend them before the marked event.
  • A quest reward is not the same as a boss drop. Ordinary boss victories use the normal reward system unless a quest explicitly names a reward.
  • When a route requirement is unclear, the event marker is the authority in your current run; community route instructions can vary with localization.
What could not be verified

I found no authoritative drop-rate table for ordinary map bosses, so this guide does not claim that a particular boss always drops a specific card or relic. Named quest rewards and encounter requirements are listed only where the available references state them explicitly.

A short boss checklist

Build for the map, not just the next hallway fight. Keep enough coins for required quest trades, preserve healing before Stage 3, and remove weak cards when the opportunity appears. A thin deck makes it easier to draw your defense, status removal, and finisher on the turn they matter.

Before entering a boss, inspect the enemy intent and identify the fail condition: a charged attack, a healing loop, a protected summoner, a curse that remains after combat, or a scaling damage pattern. If you cannot answer that condition, take a safer reward or restart the run rather than hoping for a perfect draw.

  • Pirates Bay: status removal and burst damage.
  • Skulls Island: curse control, undead damage, and fast finishing attacks.
  • Souls Rift: discard outlets, skills, and sustained defense.
  • Arena: a general-purpose deck that can handle Dodge, Injury, curses, and armor.
  • Hero quests: carry the exact required item, card, or Repute route before entering the event.

Common questions

How many bosses are in Pirates Outlaws?

The official Steam page describes more than 60 unique bosses. The exact number encountered depends on the map, stage, Arena progress, quests, and optional encounters such as the Kraken.

How do I unlock Arena bosses?

The Arena unlocks after reaching 500 Repute. It contains 100 rounds, with a champion appearing on every tenth round.

What is the counter for the Spirit boss?

Use Precision Strike, Bleeding, and skill damage where possible, remove or replace Dodge, and focus the main Spirit before its escalating damage makes the fight unmanageable.

How do I complete the A Reputed Pirate quest?

Trade three qualifying food relics to the Merchant in Pirate Bay Stage 3, start another Pirate Bay run, find the treasure chest, and defeat the stranger. The listed reward is Vigilante, plus 500 gold and 100 Repute.

What is the Alchemist quest condition?

Carry four Emerald cards into Souls Rift, fuse them at the marked quest events, collect Sapphire and Ruby from the failed fusions, then fuse at Stage 3. The final enemies are immune to melee damage.

Is the Kraken a required boss?

No. The Kraken is an optional Souls Rift encounter triggered by pursuing the event after it steals some Action Points. Defeating it replaces the final random Stage 3 boss and grants an achievement.
