Spoilers for late-map encounters and the campaign’s final boss.

The answer before the background

Our recommendation

There are four campaign boss encounters: Shadow in the Water on Frostsee, Elara the Vile on Moorweg, Strange Statue on Sturmklamm, and the Corrupt King on Totend. Prepare for each by saving gold for the last waves, upgrading the damage type that matches the boss, and keeping the King mobile so he can draw attacks away from the Castle Center. Boss victories do not award normal loot items; they finish the map and count toward quests, crowns, score and progression.

Every campaign boss and where to find it

Bosses are a separate enemy category from Human, Monster and Siege enemies. Elite versions of ordinary enemies have four times their normal health and three times their damage, so the waves before a boss can be as important as the boss itself.

The first boss is the frozen-lake creature on Frostsee. The fire encounter follows on Moorweg, then Sturmklamm ends with four awakened statues. Totend is the final map and ends with the Corrupt King.

About enemy icons

Use the enemy category and silhouette shown in the pause screen to plan counters. Human, Monster, Siege and Boss enemies behave differently, while the advanced settings can display basic health and damage values during a run.

How to beat Shadow in the Water on Frostsee

Shadow in the Water rises from Frostsee’s central lake. Its appearance destroys the map’s ports, so do not depend on fishing income after the fight begins. It also periodically releases smaller enemies, turning the encounter into a damage race with a crowd-control problem.

The creature deals increased damage to towers but reduced damage to the King and vulnerable units. That makes a purely static tower defense less reliable than a mixed plan: use towers for sustained fire, keep mobile units nearby, and have the King pull smaller enemies away from damaged structures.

  • Build and upgrade ranged towers before the boss night, but do not place every defensive resource in one exposed cluster.
  • Keep the King moving around the lake and use him to draw spawned enemies into tower range.
  • Use melee resistance if the boss or its minions are reaching the King repeatedly.
  • Prioritize the boss when its spawned enemies are contained; otherwise clear the dangerous adds before they overwhelm your economy and towers.
Verified limitation

The available references list no special item drop for this encounter. Treat the reward as map victory and progression rather than loot farming.

How to beat Elara the Vile on Moorweg

Elara is a ranged fire boss with 15,000 health. Her fight was rebalanced after launch: the current post-2.06 behavior alternates between a fire tornado and a ranged fire attack instead of running both attacks continuously. The extra downtime creates openings, but her attacks were also retuned to hit harder than the temporary 2.04 hotfix version.

The safest approach is to separate survival from damage. Let towers and upgraded ranged units maintain pressure while the King moves laterally around the arena. Do not stand still in the tornado path, and do not allow the boss to keep uninterrupted line of fire on a single barracks or tower.

  • Use ranged resistance when Elara’s projectiles are deleting the King or frontline units too quickly.
  • Attack during the gap between her tornado and projectile patterns, then reposition before the next attack begins.
  • Keep repair money available for the structures closest to her approach route.
  • Avoid chasing her into a corner if doing so abandons the Castle Center; sustained damage is more valuable than a risky burst.
Why older guides may disagree

Early-release advice can describe overlapping fire attacks or much lower damage. The alternating attack pattern is the relevant post-2.06 behavior.

How to beat the Strange Statue on Sturmklamm

The final night of Sturmklamm awakens four Strange Statues. This is not a normal single-target boss fight: several durable targets can attack at once, and the map’s limited walls make tower placement and movement more important than a traditional choke point.

A tower-heavy build is the most dependable recommendation. Activated shrines add continuous damage, so lead the statues around shrine coverage instead of fighting them in an isolated corner. Golems can buy time, while the King should focus on positioning, pulling statues through damage zones and avoiding unnecessary direct hits.

  • Activate shrines during earlier waves and leave enough supporting defenses alive for the final night.
  • Invest in Ballista or other high-damage towers rather than relying only on the King’s weapon.
  • Use the Shadow Codex if available and apply its curse across the statues before concentrating fire.
  • Keep statues moving through activated shrine ranges; standing and trading blows wastes the map’s strongest advantage.
Encounter condition

The four-statue fight is tied to Sturmklamm’s final night, not a random event or optional world boss.

How to beat the Corrupt King on Totend

The Corrupt King is the last campaign boss and appears on Totend’s nineteenth night, after the final siege wave. He has two main forms. In the flying phase, he ignores walls and attacks the kingdom from above. In the grounded phase, he becomes a close-range threat and summons shadow clones as his health falls.

The post-2.06 fight is less dependent on one narrow build. The grounded form’s health was reduced to 66,666, clones have 1,250 health, and clone spawning is tied to health thresholds rather than jumps. The flying form also loses health while using its attack, while the grounded jump no longer damages the Castle Center.

  • Save gold from the final siege for emergency repairs and last-minute upgrades; there is no boss-wave income.
  • Use target lock and keep concentrated damage on the King instead of scattering attacks across clones.
  • Kite the grounded form away from the Castle Center. If it follows the King, your towers and units gain time to keep firing.
  • Use a high-damage weapon or fully upgraded Ballista and Sniper towers. Blood Wand is particularly effective when it can maintain damage on one target.
  • Destroy clones only when they threaten the Castle Center, critical towers or the King. The main goal is to push the boss through its health thresholds quickly.
  • Do not expect a conventional drop. Defeating the Corrupt King completes the campaign map and contributes to quest and score objectives.
Practical preparation

Totend has 19 nights, starts with 23 gold, gives no gold for its first four nights and contains 29 enemy types. Protect the early economy, then reserve late income for ranged damage, repairs and the final boss.

What bosses drop and how long the campaign takes

Thronefall is a run-based kingdom defense game rather than a loot-driven RPG. The boss references and campaign map data do not list unique weapons, armor, crafting materials or boss-specific equipment drops. A successful fight gives the normal benefits of winning a map: completion, quest progress, crowns where applicable, score and access to later campaign content.

There is no single reliable answer to how long it takes to beat the game. A first clear depends on difficulty, retries, quests and whether you count optional objectives. The campaign contains ten maps, and Totend alone has 19 nights, so a normal first playthrough is better measured in several sessions than by a fixed boss timer.

  • Before every boss, spend spare gold on permanent damage, range, resistance and unit upgrades rather than cosmetic or low-impact options.
  • Repair the structures that protect income and the Castle Center first.
  • Keep at least one mobile response group available for siege units and spawned minions.
  • If a boss kills you quickly, replay the preceding waves and change the build instead of only adding more walls.

Common questions

What is the first boss in Thronefall?

Shadow in the Water is the first campaign boss. It appears on Frostsee, rises from the central lake, destroys the ports and spawns smaller enemies during the fight.

What is the ice boss?

The ice or frozen-lake boss is Shadow in the Water on Frostsee. Use sustained ranged damage, keep the King mobile and prepare for extra enemies after it appears.

What is the final boss?

The Corrupt King is the final boss on Totend. He fights first in a flying form and then in a grounded form that summons shadow clones at health thresholds.

Do bosses drop unique loot?

No unique boss loot is documented in the available campaign references. Boss victories function as map completions and contribute to quests, crowns, score and progression.

Are Eldermole and Ghostqueen campaign bosses?

They appear in some enemy reference lists, but the verified campaign map progression identifies Frostsee, Moorweg, Sturmklamm and Totend as the maps with the named campaign boss encounters covered here. Their encounter conditions are not sufficiently verified for inclusion as current campaign fights.
