Fast answer
The answer before the background
For a reliable all-purpose run, start with King Bible, Santa Water, Garlic or Song of Mana, then add Magic Wand or Laurel for safer coverage. Aim for Unholy Vespers, La Borra, Soul Eater or Mannajja when their passive requirements fit. For boss damage, choose Thousand Edge, Holy Wand or Heaven Sword. For difficult stages, combine one close-range defensive weapon, one screen-clearing weapon and one homing or directional weapon instead of filling every slot with the same attack pattern.
Quick ranking
Best choices for most runs
This is a practical tier list rather than a claim that every weapon has identical value in every mode. Weapons are ranked by how consistently they help a normal run reach its late-game pressure points, how forgiving they are before evolution, and how well their passive requirement contributes to the rest of the build.
S-tier recommendations are weapons that solve a major survival problem: clearing crowds, controlling space, killing elites or recovering from mistakes. A weapon can drop to A-tier when its evolution is awkward, its damage depends heavily on a specific Arcana, or it is strongest only on a particular stage.
- S tier: Santa Water, King Bible, Garlic, Song of Mana, Pentagram, Laurel and the Peachone and Ebony Wings combination.
- A tier: Magic Wand, Knife, Cross, Axe, Fire Wand, Runetracer, Lightning Ring and Whip.
- B tier: Garlic before evolution, Gatti Amari, Phiera Der Tuphello, Eight The Sparrow, Shadow Pinion and most weapons that need careful positioning.
- Specialist tier: Victory Sword, Bracelet lines, DLC signature weapons and high-ceiling weapons whose value depends strongly on character bonuses or stage rules.
| Role | Recommended weapon or evolution | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Crowd control | Santa Water → La Borra | Creates persistent area damage and becomes especially reliable when enemies surround you. |
| Close defense | King Bible → Unholy Vespers | Forms a rotating barrier that protects movement and damages enemies entering your space. |
| Emergency defense | Laurel → Crimson Shroud | Provides a safety tool for players who are still learning enemy patterns. |
| Boss damage | Knife → Thousand Edge | Fires rapidly in the direction you face and rewards deliberate movement. |
| Screen clearing | Pentagram → Gorgeous Moon | Can remove large groups and produce experience, but its timing is less consistent early in a run. |
| High-ceiling setup | Peachone + Ebony Wings → Vandalier | Covers wide circular zones and benefits greatly from projectile-focused upgrades. |
Poncle does not publish an official universal tier list. The ordering above is a repeatable-play recommendation based on coverage, survivability and ease of use, not a developer balance statement.
Build planning
Best equipment by build type
For a beginner build, take one weapon that protects the space immediately around your character and one that attacks at range. Garlic plus Song of Mana is forgiving because both help control nearby enemies, while Magic Wand or Santa Water deals with targets you cannot safely approach. Add Hollow Heart only when Whip is part of the plan; otherwise, do not take an evolution passive merely because it is available.
For an area-control build, prioritize Santa Water, King Bible, Song of Mana and Lightning Ring. Their effects overlap around the player and reduce the number of directions that need constant attention. Empty Tome is particularly valuable with King Bible and Magic Wand because reducing cooldown improves both protection and damage frequency.
For a projectile build, combine Magic Wand, Knife, Cross, Runetracer or the bird weapons with Duplicator, Bracer, Empty Tome and Spinach where available. This approach is stronger when you can keep moving in a deliberate direction and when the stage gives you room to kite.
For a defensive or challenge build, Laurel is the safer choice than another damage weapon if the stage contains cramped routes, dangerous bosses or enemies that can break through your normal perimeter. Armor, Max Health, Recovery and a suitable evolution passive may produce fewer damage numbers but can prevent a failed run.
DLC equipment can outperform these recommendations in the right hands, particularly when a character or stage rewards its weapon family. However, there is no verified reason to treat every newest weapon as automatically superior. Test the weapon before building an entire run around it.
- Do not force an evolution if its passive is worse than a stronger general-purpose passive for your current plan.
- Keep at least one weapon that works before evolution; some late-game evolutions are excellent but awkward during the first several minutes.
- If you use Limit Break, projectile count, area, cooldown and damage can all change the value of a weapon, so ordinary-mode rankings should not be treated as absolute.
| Build goal | Core picks | Useful passives |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner survival | Garlic, Song of Mana, Magic Wand | Empty Tome, Pummarola, Spinach, Armor |
| Area control | Santa Water, King Bible, Lightning Ring | Empty Tome, Spellbinder, Duplicator |
| Fast projectile damage | Knife, Magic Wand, Cross | Bracer, Empty Tome, Spinach, Duplicator |
| Safe challenge run | Laurel, King Bible, Santa Water | Armor, Tiragisú, Empty Tome, Recovery |
Most standard evolutions require a maxed base weapon, the relevant passive or partner item, and a qualifying Treasure Chest. Some special weapons, unions and gifts use different rules, so confirm the individual recipe before committing a slot.
Stage advice
Choose around the map, not just the tier list
Open stages reward weapons that create a safe circle while you travel toward experience and stage items. Santa Water, King Bible, Lightning Ring and Garlic are dependable because they continue working while you steer toward pickups. Pair them with a homing weapon if you want less precise aiming.
Cramped stages favor persistent zones and close-range protection. Song of Mana, King Bible, Garlic and Laurel are safer than weapons that require a clear firing lane. Knife and Shadow Pinion can still work, but they demand more deliberate movement and positioning.
Stages with dangerous elites or recurring bosses benefit from at least one focused damage option. Thousand Edge, Holy Wand, Heaven Sword and Hellfire give you ways to pressure priority targets while your area weapons handle ordinary enemies.
For exploration-heavy stages, Attractorb is often more useful than a narrow damage passive because it shortens the time spent circling for experience. Crown is a strong alternative when the run is still leveling quickly and you can already survive the current wave.
The stage modifier matters. Hyper, Inverse, Endless, Limit Break, Arcanas, Darkanas and DLC-specific rules can change which weapons scale best. If a weapon feels weak only in one mode, treat that as a mode-specific limitation rather than proof that it is universally poor.
- Open map: favor Santa Water, King Bible, Lightning Ring and homing attacks.
- Cramped map: favor Garlic, Song of Mana, Laurel and persistent area damage.
- Boss-heavy run: add Knife, Magic Wand, Cross or another focused projectile weapon.
- Experience-focused run: consider Attractorb or Crown after your immediate survival needs are covered.
| Situation | First priority | Second priority |
|---|---|---|
| You are losing to crowds | Area coverage around the character | Cooldown or projectile count |
| You cannot reach experience safely | Attractorb or a protective perimeter | Movement speed and cooldown |
| Bosses survive too long | Focused projectile damage | Might, area or projectile count |
| You die to contact damage | Laurel, King Bible or Garlic | Armor, health or recovery |
Stage-specific rankings are recommendations, not fixed rules. Enemy composition, character bonuses, Arcana choices and your available unlocks can outweigh the general ranking.
Execution
How to assemble the loadout
First, choose the run's main problem: surviving contact, clearing crowds, killing bosses or leveling quickly. Pick one weapon that directly solves it. Next, choose a complementary weapon rather than a duplicate. A close-range barrier plus a ranged attack is usually more reliable than two attacks that both require enemies to be directly in front of you.
Second, check the evolution path before accepting a passive. If you already have Empty Tome, Magic Wand and King Bible become more attractive. If you have Spinach, Fire Wand is easier to justify. If no useful evolution matches the offered passive, take a strong standalone passive instead of weakening the entire build for a future chest.
Third, level your core weapons consistently. A nearly maxed weapon with a reachable evolution is normally more valuable than collecting six underdeveloped attacks. Keep enough flexibility for stage items and character-specific weapons, especially in DLC stages.
Finally, evolve in a sensible order. Evolve the weapon that fixes your immediate weakness first, then use later chests to convert damage and control tools. Remember that evolution timing can reset or alter a weapon's firing cycle, so do not assume opening a chest is always an instant damage increase during a dangerous wave.
- Pick a survival anchor first.
- Match passives to both the evolution recipe and the whole build.
- Avoid taking a weak weapon solely because its evolution looks impressive.
- Use the Bestiary, Collection and in-game unlock information when a recipe is uncertain.
| Step | Action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Select a survival anchor | It prevents the build from collapsing before evolutions arrive. |
| 2 | Add a complementary damage pattern | Different ranges and targeting rules cover more threats. |
| 3 | Secure matching passives | You improve the current run while moving toward an evolution. |
| 4 | Evolve the most urgent weapon first | Immediate stability is more valuable than a theoretical late-game ceiling. |
The official patch feed shows 1.16.107 hotfixes and notes fixes affecting several weapons, including Bloodmoon weapons and multi-projectile effects. If your platform is on a different build, visual behavior or balance may not match this guide exactly.
FAQ
Common questions
What is the strongest all-purpose weapon?
There is no single official winner, but Santa Water and its La Borra evolution are among the safest general recommendations because persistent area damage keeps working while you move. King Bible and its evolution are similarly dependable for close protection.
Are evolved weapons always better than base weapons?
Usually, but not automatically in every situation. An evolution can change targeting, timing or utility, and some base weapons are already strong with the right character, Arcana or Limit Break setup. Evolve when the result improves the problem your run is actually facing.
Should I fill all six weapon slots?
Not necessarily. Six complete weapons are a straightforward approach, but a smaller number of well-supported weapons can be stronger in modes that reward concentrated upgrades or Limit Break scaling. Do not leave slots empty unless you understand why the trade-off helps.
Which passive items are safest to take?
Empty Tome, Spinach, Duplicator and Attractorb are broadly useful, but the best choice depends on your weapons. Tiragisú, Armor, Recovery and Max Health become more valuable when survival is the problem. Always check whether a passive is needed for an evolution you genuinely want.
Do DLC weapons belong in the same tier list?
They can be compared, but their value is less universal because they may depend on a DLC character, stage, weapon family or special mechanic. Treat them as specialist choices until you have tested their early-run performance and evolution requirements.
