The answer before the background

Our recommendation

For a dependable general build, lead Engineer and combine Electric Turret, Electrocution and EMP Grenade with ability damage, ability cooldown reduction, area and duration. Add Huntress when you want stronger weapon critical hits, or Ghost when you want melee pressure and ability criticals. Use SWAT for an uncomplicated weapon route, Tank for armor and horde control, Medic for healing, Pyro for fire damage, Mechanic for ability support and Ranger for marked-target utility. During a run, finish one weapon or ability package before chasing secondary synergies. If attempting No Skill, avoid ability rewards while still taking money, health and defensive options when the game offers them.

Classes and their jobs

A squad has up to three survivors, with the leader providing the full value of their leader perk and rescued members contributing a reduced value. That makes the first choice important: select the leader whose global bonus matches the run, then use the other two slots to cover missing damage, control or sustain.

The current 1.0-era ability reference lists nine survivors: SWAT, Tank, Engineer, Huntress, Ghost, Medic, Pyro, Mechanic and Ranger. The older official wiki page still reports seven, so treat the in-game selection screen as the final authority if your installation shows a different roster.

  • SWAT: Straightforward kinetic weapons, reliable reload support and a flexible first build. Choose this when you want a forgiving gun route.
  • Tank: Armor, heavy weapons and space control. Tank is the safest choice when enemies regularly reach the squad.
  • Engineer: Cooldown-focused electric damage, turrets, shields and grenades. This is the best starting class for ability-heavy runs.
  • Huntress: Critical-focused ranged damage. Her slower attacks are compensated by strong boss pressure and critical scaling.
  • Ghost: Close-range slashing damage with strong ability-critical and melee potential. Ghost needs movement and positioning more than armor stacking.
  • Medic: Healing, regeneration and chemical or ice utility. Medic is excellent for long runs and error-prone teams.
  • Pyro: Fire damage and area denial. Pyro becomes more valuable when enemies arrive in dense waves.
  • Mechanic: Contraptions and ability amplification. Mechanic supports teams that already want frequent active skills.
  • Ranger: A newer 1.0-era option associated with marks, ranged utility and support for elemental or ability-focused squads. Confirm exact unlock details in-game.

Verified versus uncertain

The official wiki confirms the established class roles and several unlocks, but some pages have not caught up with the Steam 1.0 release. The table therefore separates stable role information from newer roster claims that should be checked in your game.

How to choose skills and evolutions

Most survivors have four ability slots, with later branches replacing a base skill or changing its damage type. The practical rule is to choose a coherent package: pair the survivor's strongest weapon with two or three abilities that cover different ranges, cooldowns or enemy types. A screen full of unrelated elements usually performs worse than a smaller number of upgraded, mutually supporting effects.

Engineer illustrates the process clearly. Electrocution supplies repeatable electric pressure, Electric Turret adds automatic area control, and EMP Grenade gives explosive crowd control. If the shield or another defensive option appears in your current version, value it highly in difficult modes because surviving long enough to cast the next cycle is often worth more than a fourth damage skill.

  • For weapon builds, take weapon damage, weapon attack speed or reload-related improvements first, then critical chance and critical damage when the character already has a critical identity.
  • For ability builds, prioritize ability damage and cooldown reduction. Add area when skills struggle to cover the screen, and duration when the effect remains active or controls a zone.
  • For elemental builds, match tags and damage modifiers rather than mixing every element. Electric Engineer, fire Pyro and ice-oriented Mechanic routes benefit most from concentrated bonuses.
  • Use final branches according to the threat. Choose piercing, explosive or area branches for hordes; choose concentrated damage, criticals or longer uptime for elites and bosses.
  • Do not assume a synergy activates automatically. Many synergies require the named ability to appear during the run, and permanent upgrades may only unlock the possibility of the interaction.

No Skill clarification

The older official changelog records a fix so money and health powerups would not count as abilities for the No Skill achievement. That supports using ordinary money or health rewards, but the current achievement text and any later changes should be verified in-game.

Stat priorities that remain useful

The stat screen groups bonuses into healing, weapons, abilities, armor, movement and elemental effects. Build around the source of most of your damage instead of selecting every generally useful bonus. For example, weapon cooldown reduction is valuable to a gun-focused SWAT build, but it does not replace ability cooldown reduction on Engineer.

Defensive stats become more valuable as danger rises. Armor reduces the punishment from unavoidable contact, movement speed helps dodge telegraphed attacks, and health regeneration or life steal can stabilize a long run. In one-hit modes, health and regeneration have little or no practical value, so movement, dodge, damage and control should take priority.

  • Weapon route: weapon damage, attack speed or reload, critical chance, critical damage, then movement and defense.
  • Ability route: ability damage, ability cooldown reduction, area, duration and ability critical stats when the build can exploit them.
  • Boss route: critical chance, critical damage, elite and boss damage, reliable single-target attacks and enough movement to avoid attacks.
  • Elemental route: the matching elemental modifier and tag support, followed by cooldown or attack speed for more applications.
  • Safety route: armor, movement speed, health regeneration, healing bonuses and crowd control. Use this when a run is failing from deaths rather than lack of damage.

Recommendation

These are build priorities, not fixed tier-list rankings. A lower-damage build that keeps the squad alive can outperform a higher-paper-DPS build when the map or mode prevents safe positioning.

Three practical build plans

For a first clear, use Engineer as leader with a ranged weapon evolution, Electric Turret and Electrocution. Take EMP Grenade or another large-area skill when offered, then fill the final slot with defense or control. Pair Engineer with Huntress for boss pressure and a durable survivor such as Tank or a sustain option such as Medic when available.

For a critical team, lead Huntress and prioritize her weapon upgrades, critical chance and critical damage. Ghost is a natural partner because Critical Protocol-style support can amplify ability criticals, but the pair is fragile. Add Tank, Engineer or Medic depending on whether the run needs space, protection or healing.

For a no-skill attempt, choose a survivor with a dependable weapon route, avoid ability rewards and concentrate on weapon upgrades, passive items, movement and defense. Rerolls and bans are especially important because one unwanted ability can end the attempt. The official changelog confirms that health and money rewards were separated from ability counting in the achievement logic, but current behavior still deserves an in-game check.

  • Step 1: Decide whether weapons, abilities or criticals will provide most of the damage.
  • Step 2: Secure one complete weapon or ability package before taking speculative synergies.
  • Step 3: Add one crowd-control answer and one defensive answer before the late waves.
  • Step 4: Spend rerolls and bans to protect the route rather than chasing a perfect early roll.
  • Step 5: Recheck the pause-menu stat panel after upgrades so you know whether a bonus affects weapons, abilities or both.

Common questions

What is the best class for beginners?

Engineer is the safest recommendation if you like active abilities because cooldown reduction, turret control and defensive tools cover common mistakes. SWAT is equally approachable if you prefer a simple weapon-first run.

What is the best Engineer build?

Use an electric weapon route with Electrocution and Electric Turret, then add EMP Grenade or another large-area skill. Prioritize ability damage, cooldown reduction and area, while keeping one defensive or movement option.

What are the best Huntress abilities?

Favor abilities and weapons that preserve her critical identity while adding area coverage. Her role is strongest against elites and bosses, so pair critical upgrades with one reliable horde-control option.

How should I build Ghost?

Ghost wants movement, close-range slashing damage and ability critical support. Keep moving through or around the horde, and pair Ghost with Engineer, Huntress or Tank so the team supplies control while Ghost handles nearby threats.

Does No Skill mean I cannot take health or money rewards?

The official Early Access changelog says a fix stopped money and health powerups from counting as abilities for the achievement. Avoid ability rewards, but verify the current achievement text in your version because the official wiki contains older information.
