The answer before the background

Our recommendation

There are three practical map groups. Campaign missions are fixed scenarios spread across named areas such as Outskirts, Hogar, Highlands, Wetlands, Depths and Abyss. Skirmish currently lists two fixed missions, Forgotten Glade and The Torrents. Survival creates procedural maps from a selected terrain and can be replayed with seeds. For every map, scout the shortest routes to wood, minerals, salvage and objectives before committing to a fortress. Build your first wall at a narrow, defensible connection that still lets workers and troops reach the resources you need.

How the map types differ

Campaign maps are designed around the mission type. Tutorial and city-building missions teach or test settlement construction, expedition missions restrict units and building pieces while asking you to explore, and tower-defense missions provide a limited defensive setup with a fixed objective. That distinction changes how aggressively you should expand.

City-building maps reward a connected settlement: production buildings, resource sites and defensive walls must work as one system. Expedition maps are closer to route puzzles. You must preserve your limited force, search ruins or caches and avoid turning every fight into a costly detour. Tower-defense maps are less about expansion and more about controlling the approach to the stronghold and, when required, the ancient beacon.

Survival is the most variable format. Its maps are procedurally generated, and the generation settings can be customized. That makes a seed useful for repeating a layout, but it does not make every seed equally strong: the value of a layout depends on resource distance, elevation, choke points and the direction of later waves.

  • Fixed campaign areas include Outskirts, Hogar, Highlands, Wetlands, Depths and Abyss.
  • Wetlands introduces rain, which can make attacks miss unless units are sheltered.
  • Depths sharply reduces unit sight range, making scouting and safe movement more important.
  • The official map list currently names Forgotten Glade and The Torrents as the two Skirmish missions.

Verified versus inferred

The named areas and mission structure are verified by the official wiki. Recommendations about the safest first wall or best scouting order are practical guidance, not universal rules; a generated map can invalidate them.

Plan around the mission objective

Before placing a wall, pause and identify three routes: the worker route to nearby wood or minerals, the troop route to the next objective, and the enemy route to your citadel or stronghold. If two of these overlap, keep the corridor wide enough for units and workers to pass without dismantling your defense.

The campaign’s named areas signal the kind of problem you should expect. Outskirts and Highlands commonly support early exploration and settlement growth. Hogar missions emphasize defending established gates and city approaches. Wetlands adds rain and bog-like space, while Depths limits vision and makes hidden threats harder to detect. The final Abyss mission is a larger city-building scenario with multiple strongholds, so a single compact wall is not enough.

In expedition missions, do not spend limited building pieces on decorative fortifications. Use them to secure a retreat, protect a narrow crossing or create height for ranged units. In city-building missions, invest earlier in permanent infrastructure because prosperity, production and military capacity improve over several nights.

  • Mark the citadel or stronghold, then trace the shortest walkable approach from each open side.
  • Place early resource buildings where they remain connected to the settlement and can be defended without splitting your army.
  • Scout ruins, caches and optional objectives before triggering the next major attack when the mission allows it.
  • Keep at least one retreat path for Iris and fragile units; a forward wall is not useful if it traps your own force.
  • For tower defense, inspect both the stronghold route and the ancient beacon route before starting the night.

A practical first minute

Pause immediately, zoom out, and locate the objective, resource nodes, high ground, narrow passages and visible horror groups. Then choose the smallest defensible area that supports your next objective.

Using fixed layouts, seeds and terrain

Skirmish maps are fixed missions rather than an endless list of random layouts. The current official listing names Forgotten Glade and The Torrents, and each lasts four nights. Learn their opening resource pattern and attack lanes instead of searching for a seed that cannot change the underlying scenario.

Survival is where map seeds matter. A seed can let you replay a procedural layout, compare openings or share a favorable resource distribution with another player. It cannot guarantee the same result if generation settings, difficulty or the game version differ. Record the terrain, seed and important settings when sharing one.

For a new Survival map, do not wall the citadel immediately unless the surrounding terrain is exceptionally open. First reveal nearby wood, minerals and likely attack directions. A base that protects resources but creates four separate defensive fronts usually costs more than a smaller base built around one or two natural chokes.

The official terrain list names Highlands, Wetlands and Depths, although the current mode page also contains wording that calls them two selectable terrains. Because the list itself includes three, this guide treats Highlands, Wetlands and Depths as the intended selectable terrains and flags the wording as a documentation inconsistency.

  • Use Highlands to practice ordinary resource-to-wall connections and elevation planning.
  • Use Wetlands with sheltered firing positions in mind; exposed ranged units can lose reliability in rain.
  • Use Depths with short scouting trips, overlapping vision and safer fallback positions.
  • When testing a seed, play several nights before judging it. A strong opening can still become difficult when attack directions multiply.
Seed questionReliable answer
Does a seed apply to the campaign? No verified evidence indicates that fixed campaign missions use the same procedural seed system as Survival.
Does a seed guarantee an easy map?No. It reproduces a layout; difficulty still depends on terrain, settings, objectives and execution.
Where should seeds be shared?Community discussions and custom-level spaces are the practical places, but label them with terrain and version details.
Seed checklist

Write down the seed, terrain, map-generation settings, difficulty and game version. Without those details, another player may not reproduce the same layout.

Build walls that control movement

The strongest early defense is usually a short wall at a natural choke rather than a huge perimeter. A shorter line needs fewer pieces, concentrates ranged fire and gives workers less distance to travel. Leave enough room behind it for units to reposition and for damaged sections to be repaired or replaced.

Height matters because Cataclismo is a vertical fortress builder. Use elevated firing positions when the terrain supports them, but do not create a tower that depends on a single fragile support column. A collapse can kill units instantly if they fall into the mist, so inspect support before adding more levels.

Do not assume the red attack indicator describes every horror on the map. Night waves show their intended direction, but roaming or ambient horrors can become active from another side. Keep a small reserve force near the citadel and avoid sending every combat unit beyond the last safe wall.

Resource routes deserve the same attention as enemy routes. If a sawmill, quarry or other production building is disconnected from the citadel, its value is reduced even if it is placed beside the resource. Build roads and connectors early enough that workers are not forced through the same narrow passage used by your defenders.

  • Prefer one strong choke to several weak walls when the terrain permits it.
  • Create a fallback position behind the first wall before expanding toward distant resources.
  • Place ranged units where they can fire over or around the wall without blocking worker movement.
  • Keep repair access and a troop route behind each critical defensive section.
  • Recheck every exposed flank after the first night because ambient horrors may reveal a second route.
Map featureRecommended response
Narrow passUse a compact wall, concentrated ranged fire and a retreat lane.
Open plainBuild a smaller inner perimeter first and add delay pieces outside it.
High groundUse it for firing positions, but verify support and access.
Broodnest areaAvoid building too close until you are ready to clear or contain it.
Multiple strongholdsPlan separate defense zones and a troop-transfer route between them.
Do not overbuild early

A wall that consumes the wood or minerals needed for workers, shelters and units may make the map harder. Expand defense in response to a real route, not to the entire visible map.

Frequently asked questions

Are campaign maps random?

The campaign missions listed by the official wiki are fixed scenarios with named missions, terrains and objectives. Their layouts should not be treated like Survival’s procedural maps. You can replay a campaign mission, but there is no verified reason to expect a new map seed to change its core structure.

Common questions

How many campaign maps are there?

The current official campaign listing contains 17 chapters, from A Herald’s Message through The Alta Perl. The chapters use different mission types and terrains, so the campaign is not one continuous freely explorable map.

What are the named campaign areas?

The official listing names Outskirts, Hogar, Highlands, Wetlands, Depths and Abyss. These are terrain or story areas used by specific missions, not a confirmed connected overworld that can be freely traversed between chapters.

What are the Cataclismo skirmish maps?

The current official mode page lists two Skirmish missions: Forgotten Glade and The Torrents. Both last four nights. The page also lists Highlands, Wetlands and Depths as selectable terrain names, although its wording about the number of terrains is inconsistent.

How do map seeds work?

Seeds are relevant to procedural Survival maps. They reproduce a generated layout when the terrain and relevant settings match, but they do not guarantee an easy opening and should be shared with version and settings information.

What should I scout first?

Find the nearest wood and minerals, the objective route, high ground, narrow crossings, visible horror groups and any Broodnest. Then place the first defense where it protects both the citadel and the shortest useful resource connection.

Why did horrors reach my base from an unexpected side?

The night indicator shows the direction of the announced attack, but roaming or ambient horrors can become active separately. Open terrain can also split a wave into different paths. Keep a reserve near the citadel and use fallback defenses instead of guarding only the marked lane.
