The answer before the background

Our recommendation

For most players, start with Merris and build toward Telekinesis, cast damage, pull area, experience gain and a small amount of defensive sustain. This is the best all-round setup for clearing stages safely, farming gear and learning high Darkness. Choose Leaf if you want the best mobile melee option, especially for players who enjoy form switching and lifesteal. Choose Kront for the easiest durable melee progression, or Skadi for a simple attack-and-status build. These are recommendations rather than an official ranking: the game is still in Early Access, community results vary with gear, talents and Darkness modifiers, and a large balance overhaul is planned.

The four builds worth starting with

There is no single setup that dominates every stage and goal. Death Must Die combines hero talents, god blessings, item affixes, Darkness modifiers and random offers, so a theoretically perfect build can still fail when its key blessing does not appear. The practical approach is to choose an archetype with several acceptable substitutes, then prioritize the damage type your gear already supports.

Merris is the safest first recommendation because her staff attacks are ranged and her talent tree supports cast damage, pull area, experience gain, summons and dash-cast interactions. The Telekinesis talent specifically links pull area to cast damage, making it a natural centerpiece for a screen-control caster.

  • Best all-purpose: Merris Telekinesis caster.
  • Best farming build: ranged Merris with pull range, experience gain and wide-area casts.
  • Best Leaf build: mobile form-based attack build with lifesteal or other sustain.
  • Best beginner melee: Kront attack build with area, knockback and defensive support.
  • Best simple attack build: Skadi with wide strikes, attack damage, attack speed and status support.

Verified versus recommended

Verified facts include hero weapon identities, Merris talent names and the game’s Early Access status. The rankings above are editorial recommendations based on those mechanics and current community patterns, not measured win-rate data.

Merris Telekinesis caster

Use this when you want the strongest combination of safety, map control and repeatable farming. Start by taking any reliable cast that clears a lane, then look for cast damage, cast projectiles, cooldown reduction, pull area and experience gain. Telekinesis is the capstone direction: increasing pull area both gathers experience and improves the talent’s damage scaling. Channel is another attractive route if you are comfortable reducing or stopping normal attacks, because it rewards a spell-and-summon playstyle.

For blessings, favor broad attacks that cover space rather than stacking several narrow skills. Add one dependable boss tool, such as a high-damage cast or repeated projectile option, because crowd clear alone does not always finish guardians quickly. Time-style experience or cooldown support is useful, while defensive healing, evasion or a shield effect prevents a good run from ending to one missed dodge.

The leveling order is simple: take one clear tool early, then improve its damage and coverage before adding secondary damage. Do not spend every offer chasing a named god combination. If the exact blessing does not appear, preserve the run with general cast damage, area, cooldown and survivability instead.

  • Talents: Arcane Breeze or other cast damage nodes, Astral Warp or pull-area support, then Telekinesis.
  • Gear: cast damage, pull area, cast projectiles, cooldown and experience gain.
  • Gameplay: keep distance, circle the edge of the experience field and use dashes to reposition rather than dive into crowds.
  • High Darkness adjustment: replace greedier experience stats with life, evasion, armor or healing when hits become lethal.

Leaf mobile attack and sustain

Leaf is the better recommendation for players who dislike stationary casting. Community build discussions commonly describe Leaf around form-based melee attacks, including Panther or Bear-style approaches, with attack scaling and lifesteal doing much of the defensive work. Treat this as a flexible archetype rather than a fixed shopping list: the best form and exact blessing can depend heavily on the item affixes you have available.

Build around one attack blessing and amplify it with attack damage, attack speed, attack area and strike-related projectiles or effects. Add sustain early if your form places you in melee range. A status attack can also be worthwhile when it provides control or a multiplier, but avoid splitting your gear between attack, cast and summon damage unless a unique item clearly rewards the hybrid.

Leaf performs especially well when you actively weave through enemies, collect experience during movement and use forms to answer different threats. It is not the easiest farming pick for a new player, but it can become the most comfortable option once you understand enemy patterns and want a more involved run.

  • Use one main form and build around its damage pattern instead of equal investment in every form.
  • Prioritize attack damage and area before luxury stats; add sustain before pushing high Darkness.
  • Take defensive blessings that let you remain in contact range without relying on perfect dodges.
  • For bosses, save movement space and avoid being trapped against map obstacles.

Kront and Skadi for melee progression

Kront is the most forgiving melee starting point. His base weapon is a three-part axe combo, and his associated options include attack blessings, knockback and Ruptured-focused effects. That combination gives new players a clear plan: increase attack area, improve attack damage, add enough attack speed to smooth the combo and use knockback or crowd control to avoid being surrounded.

Skadi is the cleaner alternative if you want wide greatsword swings without building around a complicated form system. Her two-part attack is naturally suited to attack damage, attack speed, area and status effects. She is a good bridge between beginner play and higher Darkness, but melee heroes still need more attention to positioning than Merris.

For either hero, use at least one source of sustain or damage mitigation. Melee damage looks impressive during a strong wave, but a build that cannot survive a boss arena is not a successful progression build. Prioritize reliable clear first, then add single-target damage and defensive layers.

  • Kront: attack area, attack damage, knockback, Ruptured support and survivability.
  • Skadi: attack speed, area, status application, critical or strike support and sustain.
  • Both: keep a dash available for boss attacks; do not spend every dash only for damage.
  • If offers are poor, take general attack damage or defensive blessings rather than forcing a dead synergy.

How to adapt the recommendation

For early stages and low Darkness, prioritize experience gain, movement speed and broad screen clear. A ranged Merris setup is usually the most efficient way to learn maps because it lets you see enemy patterns without constantly trading hits. Kront and Skadi are better if you want to learn melee spacing from the start.

For Act III or high Darkness, damage alone is not enough. Patch 0.8.5 adjusted several Act III systems, including enemy behavior, summon scaling, item affixes and unique items, while earlier Act III patches changed monster damage, darkness scaling and summon durability. That makes old guides especially risky to follow without checking their patch date.

For farming, select a build that clears ordinary waves without consuming every resource. Merris gets the strongest recommendation because range, pull area and experience gain reduce downtime. Keep enough boss damage to finish the run; a build that farms brilliantly but stalls at the guardian is less efficient than a slightly slower setup that completes consistently.

For pushing a personal high score, use the hero whose controls you can execute reliably. A lower-rated build with good gear, correct talents and clean movement will outperform a supposedly stronger build that depends on rare offers or unfamiliar mechanics.

  • Check the patch date of any guide before copying its item list.
  • Build around one main damage family and one backup boss answer.
  • Use Armory presets to keep farming and pushing gear separate; Patch 0.8.5 added item filtering and improved preset sorting.
  • Expect future rankings to change when the announced god and blessing overhaul is released.
Uncertainty to keep in mind

No authoritative public win-rate database was available for these builds. Community reports are useful for identifying recurring archetypes, but they are not controlled comparisons and often reflect different item quality or Darkness settings.

Common questions

What is the best farming build?

Merris with a ranged Telekinesis-oriented caster setup is the safest recommendation. Stack pull area, cast damage, experience gain and wide coverage, then add one strong boss tool and enough defense to finish the run.

What is the best Leaf build?

Use one form as the main damage engine, then stack attack damage, attack speed, area and sustain. Panther- or Bear-style melee approaches are common community recommendations, but the exact choice should follow your available talents and gear.

What is the best Merris build?

Telekinesis caster is the best general-purpose direction. It combines ranged safety with pull-area scaling, experience collection and strong screen control. Summon and dash-cast variants are valid alternatives when your items support them.

Is there an official class.tier list?

No official tier list was identified. Treat rankings as goal-based recommendations, not permanent class grades. The developer has announced a broad rebuild of the god and blessing systems, which may substantially change current comparisons.

Should I copy an old build guide exactly?

No. Use old guides for archetype ideas, then verify talent names, blessing behavior, item effects and Act III balance against the current game. Patch 0.8.5 and the preceding Act III patches changed enough systems that exact old item lists may no longer be optimal.
