The answer before the background

Our recommendation

Bosses spawn at 7:00, 14:00 and 20:00. The first act uses the Left and Right Hands of the Baron at 7:00, then the Necromancer at 14:00 and Dracula at 20:00. The second act uses The Cursed, Insect Queen and The Djinn. The third uses Frog King, Scarecrow and Lady of the Lake. A boss fight pauses the normal timed minion flow until the boss dies, so use each arena as a focused damage-and-survival check rather than trying to clear the entire screen first.

Boss timers and the complete order

The timer is the most reliable way to prepare. Expect the first boss wave at 7:00, the second at 14:00 and the act-ending boss at 20:00. These are boss times, not approximate windows: start moving toward a safe position before the clock reaches the mark and avoid spending your last dash on routine enemies. Each act contains three boss fights.

Act 1 is the exception to the simple one-boss-per-timer pattern. At 7:00, the Left Hand and Right Hand of the Baron arrive together. They count as the first encounter, and both must be defeated before normal timed enemy spawning resumes.

  • Act 1 — Outer Circle: 7:00 Left and Right Hands of the Baron; 14:00 Necromancer; 20:00 Dracula, Baron of the Outer Circle.
  • Act 2 — Endless Desert: 7:00 The Cursed; 14:00 Insect Queen; 20:00 The Djinn.
  • Act 3 — Darkmoor: 7:00 Frog King; 14:00 Scarecrow; 20:00 Lady of the Lake.

Final boss clarification

Dracula is the final boss of Act 1, The Djinn is the final boss of Act 2, and Lady of the Lake is the final boss of Act 3. Death has not been verified as a current fightable end boss. The developers’ roadmap still describes Act 4 as future work.

What each boss demands

The Baron’s Hands are mobile melee threats. Their large charges and claw-shaped attacks are telegraphed, so keep enough open ground around your character to sidestep rather than panic-dashing through both bosses. Ranged characters can kite them; melee characters should attack after a charge finishes instead of chasing during its wind-up.

The Necromancer combines ranged fireballs with skeleton and Reaper summons. Prioritize movement and avoid standing directly in the line of fire. If the summoned wave blocks your route, use area damage or crowd control briefly, then return to the boss. Dracula is a ranged end fight: maintain distance, keep an escape route, and do not let greed turn a safe attack window into contact damage. The older boss guide confirms the fireball, summoning and ranged-kiting patterns, though its boss list predates Acts 2 and 3.

The Cursed applies pressure through acid rain and a close-range grab or drain. Start moving as soon as the green hazard appears and do not let the boss pin you against the edge of the arena. Insect Queen is an add-management fight: her supporting insects can protect or heal her, so clear the helpers whenever they prevent meaningful damage to the queen. Community reports also describe out-of-bounds add problems in older builds; later official patches fixed several arena-boundary issues, so update before treating an unreachable enemy as intended behavior.

The Djinn’s fire attack and area hazards reward using pillars or other arena cover when available. Do not spend every dash offensively; save one for the next zone or beam pattern. In Act 3, Frog King is the most commonly reported early wall: respect the short preparation on its breath attack, avoid poison and slam zones, and use the arena’s obstacles without trapping yourself. The official 0.8.2 patch lengthened the breath preparation time and reduced several Act 3 attack speeds, but the fight still tests reaction time.

Scarecrow is a sustained projectile and arena-control check. Keep moving around the perimeter, watch for missiles and thorn hazards, and kill dangerous summons if they cut off your route. Lady of the Lake mixes close slashes, projectiles and summon charm. Ranged builds should keep distance; melee builds should attack after her slash pattern rather than repeatedly crossing behind her. The official hotfix reduced her charm chance from 20% to 7%, while later patches disabled ordinary summon charm and added a safer achievement route.

  • Verified recommendation: enter each boss with at least one unused dash and a visible retreat route.
  • Verified recommendation: prioritize reliable single-target damage for boss health bars, but keep enough area damage for summoned enemies.
  • Version-aware warning: old videos may show stronger charm, faster missiles or different arena behavior than current patches.

Drops, Essence and shop progression

Bosses are the important reward checkpoints. They drop equipment and Essence, and defeating them increases the quality ceiling of items offered in the shop. The documented Act 1 shop progression adds Rare items after the Necromancer, Epic items after the Baron’s Hands and Mythic items after Dracula. Act 2 follows the same pattern: The Cursed adds Rare items, Insect Queen adds Epic items and The Djinn adds Mythic items.

The available reference lists Act 1 Essence as 2 from the Necromancer, 2 from each Baron’s Hand and 4 from Dracula. Act 2 lists 2 from The Cursed, 4 from Insect Queen and 6 from The Djinn. The accessible Act 3 entry is incomplete, so do not rely on a fixed Frog King, Scarecrow or Lady Essence number without checking the in-game result.

The April 26, 2025 Act 3 hotfix doubled item drops to help the Tier 2-to-Tier 3 transition and stated that Tier 3 mythics have roughly 60% more affix value than Tier 2 mythics. That makes early Act 3 boss clears valuable even when a run does not reach Lady of the Lake.

  • Farm Act 1 bosses for dependable early Essence and shop upgrades.
  • Use Act 2 to build a Tier 2 base before expecting consistent Act 3 clears.
  • Treat exact Act 3 boss loot quantity and Essence as unverified here; difficulty, Darkness and later balance changes can affect the practical reward value.
Drops versus difficulty

Bosses do not appear to have a single guaranteed named unique tied to each fight in the verified sources. Item rarity and quantity are affected by act, Darkness, shop progression and current patch balance, so avoid guides that promise a specific unique from a specific boss unless the game itself shows that condition.

How to defeat your shadow self as Leaf

Face Yourself is not a hidden ninth boss. Play as Leaf in Act 3 and take Time’s Clone summon. You then need an Act 3 charm effect to turn the clone hostile. Once it attacks you, kill the clone yourself. Official patch 0.8.3 added optional charm encounters at the Shard of the Fallen and Necronomicon locations specifically to make this achievement possible after the original charm changes.

The practical route is to explore Act 3 locations rather than rushing directly to the 20:00 boss. Choose Clone from Time, visit the relevant optional locations, let the charm effect land on the clone, then finish it with Leaf’s own attack. If the clone dies to another summon or damage-over-time effect, the achievement may not register according to community testing, so stop attacking briefly and deliver the final hit yourself. That last-hit detail is community-reported rather than confirmed in official patch notes.

  • Use Leaf.
  • Select Time’s Clone.
  • Explore Act 3 locations for a charm encounter.
  • Wait until the clone becomes hostile.
  • Kill the clone with Leaf’s direct attack if possible.
  • Do not confuse this with the Cut The Traitors achievement, which requires defeating Treefolk as Leaf.

Common questions

When do bosses spawn in Death Must Die?

The standard boss timers are 7:00, 14:00 and 20:00 in every act. Act 1 has two bosses at the 7:00 mark because both Baron’s Hands spawn together.

What is the Act 3 boss order?

Frog King appears at 7:00, Scarecrow at 14:00 and Lady of the Lake at 20:00. Lady is the current Act 3 final boss.

What is the frog boss counter?

Preserve a dash for Frog King’s slam or breath sequence, keep moving before the hazard fully appears, and use obstacles only when they do not cut off your escape. The official patch made the breath wind-up longer, but poison and rapid movement still punish standing still.

Is Lady of the Lake the last boss?

She is the last boss of the currently playable Act 3. The developers have announced Act 4 work, but it was not verified as released in the sources checked for this guide.

How do I get the Leaf shadow-self achievement?

As Leaf, select Time’s Clone in Act 3, find an optional charm encounter, allow the clone to become hostile, and kill it. The official 0.8.3 patch added charm locations for this achievement.
