The answer before the background

Our recommendation

Treat the campaign as a route through five regions: Misty Forest, Bone Desert, Frost Ruins, Sealed Citadel, and Void Depths. Each region contains multiple stages and ends in a boss stage. A stage is divided into enemy waves, with building, rewards, and map decisions between them. Clear Misty Forest to open Endless Mode, then clear later regions to unlock their associated maps and systems. After defeating the final boss, use More Levels! for escalating post-campaign stages, or use the extra-wave option after a normal stage when you want to stress-test your defense without advancing the run.

Regions act as the game’s practical chapters

The official materials describe Adventure Mode as a series of stages rather than a traditional chapter menu. In practice, the five named regions work like broad story chapters: Misty Forest comes first, followed by Bone Desert, Frost Ruins, Sealed Citadel, and Void Depths. Each area introduces its own maps, enemies, terrain concerns, and final encounter.

The most important campaign rule is that every region has a boss stage. Ordinary stages prepare your build and economy; the boss stage tests whether your maze, towers, relics, and upgrades can handle the region’s final threat. Clearing an area also contributes to completion records and unlock progress, so a first clear is more important than simply surviving one isolated map.

  • Misty Forest is the first major campaign region and the first gate for Endless Mode.
  • Bone Desert and Frost Ruins are subsequent regions with their own boss stages and regional mechanics.
  • Sealed Citadel adds corruption-focused complications and ancient machines on affected maps.
  • Void Depths is the final named region in the 1.0 campaign and uses void zones, portals, and support systems in its defenses.
TermWhat it means in play
RegionA group of campaign maps with a shared theme and a boss stage.
StageOne playable map on the campaign route.
WaveOne enemy attack inside a stage; surviving all required waves completes the map.
Boss stageThe region-ending stage with a boss encounter.
ChapterA useful player-facing description for a region, not a separately verified menu label.
Verified versus inferred

The five-region route and boss-per-region structure are verified by official launch information. Calling regions “chapters” is a practical comparison, because the reviewed sources do not present a separate numbered chapter system.

Build between waves, then protect the longest useful route

Waves are the moment-to-moment progression inside each stage. Before an attack begins, take time to place or adjust blocks, inspect the route, and decide where towers will get repeated opportunities to fire. A longer path is usually valuable, but only if your towers can cover it consistently and the maze does not create an unintended shortcut.

Do not treat the end of a wave as permission to spend everything immediately. Campaign stages can offer different rewards and service points, so preserve enough flexibility to respond to the next enemy group. The 1.0 notes specifically guarantee that the final group of stages before a boss includes either a Mini Shop or an Abandoned Forge as a clear reward. That gives you a reliable preparation opportunity before the region-ending fight.

  • Use early waves to establish a stable path before committing to expensive upgrades.
  • Check whether a new block placement changes enemy routing or leaves a tower outside effective coverage.
  • Prioritize reliable damage and crowd control before adding a tower that only helps in a narrow situation.
  • Treat the pre-boss Mini Shop or Abandoned Forge as a chance to repair weaknesses, not merely as extra loot.
  • On Heroic difficulty, watch for Darkness elite stages: concealed enemies cannot be attacked until your defenses extend vision into the dark.
Decision pointRecommended approach
Before wave 1Sketch a route and identify where the fire source is most vulnerable.
After an easy waveImprove path length, coverage, or economy instead of overspending on one tower.
Before a difficult modifierConfirm that your towers can see, reach, and damage the enemies the stage can produce.
Before a bossUse the guaranteed late-stage service reward when your build needs upgrades or card changes.
Difficulty matters

The exact wave count can vary by map and mode. The official sources confirm wave-based play and later scaling, but do not provide one universal wave total for every campaign stage.

Progression gates to plan around

The first major gate is Misty Forest. Clearing it on any difficulty unlocks Endless Mode, although the maps available there still depend on how far you have progressed through the campaign. This means Endless is not an immediate all-map selection screen: a daily or custom activity can reference a region you have not yet cleared, and that map remains unavailable until the relevant campaign progress is earned.

The 1.0 launch also adds Void Depths as the final named region. Clearing it on Normal difficulty or higher unlocks Void Flame. Special Event Characters and Infernal Shards are tied to completing the entire game, so an Early Access save may temporarily lose access to those systems until the new final region is cleared.

  • Clear Misty Forest on any difficulty to unlock Endless Mode.
  • Clear additional regions to expand the Endless map pool.
  • Clear Void Depths on Normal or higher to unlock Void Flame.
  • Complete the full campaign to regain or unlock Special Event Characters and Infernal Shards.
  • Use completion records to track characters, difficulties, and campaign-stage clears rather than assuming one clear finishes every challenge.

Do not confuse difficulty with a new chapter

Casual, Normal, and Heroic change the challenge of a stage. They are not separate campaign regions, although higher difficulties can expose additional elite-level rules and shard-based challenges.

Extra waves and More Levels! serve different purposes

After clearing a normal campaign stage, the extra-challenge option lets you continue fighting waves on that same map. Enemy health and speed rise over time while gold drops gradually decrease. If an enemy reaches the fire source, the challenge ends and you continue to the next level. These optional waves do not grant experience or additional rewards, so use them to test a build rather than to farm progression.

After defeating the final boss, More Levels! continues the adventure with additional stages. Each post-boss level increases overall difficulty by 15 percent. The scaling is applied through the waves of the stage rather than as an instant penalty at the opening, which gives you some time to establish a defense before the strongest pressure arrives.

  • Choose extra waves when you want to measure how long a completed defense can hold.
  • Skip optional waves when you need experience, rewards, or a safer route through the campaign.
  • Use More Levels! only after the final boss, because it is the post-campaign continuation rather than an ordinary regional unlock.
  • Expect limited starting resources to matter more as post-boss stages increase in difficulty.
OptionPurposeRewards
Extra challenge wavesStress-test the current stage defense. No experience or extra rewards.
More Levels!Continue beyond the final boss with escalating stages.Continues the adventure; scaling is the main progression pressure.
Endless ModePlay event and regional maps with leaderboard-oriented replay.Mode-specific rewards and records may apply.
Practical recommendation

For a first clear, stop once the stage is complete unless you specifically want to test your defense. Saving resources and reaching the next campaign reward is usually more useful than chasing unrewarded extra waves.

Common questions

How many campaign levels are in Emberward?

The reviewed official sources do not publish a definitive numbered total for the ordinary campaign stages. They confirm five named regions, multiple stages in each region, and a boss stage for every region. Endless Mode separately advertises more than 80 stages, so do not use that figure as the campaign total.

Are the regions the same as chapters?

They function similarly, but “chapter” is not the clearest verified in-game label from the available official information. Use the region names on the map: Misty Forest, Bone Desert, Frost Ruins, Sealed Citadel, and Void Depths.

When does Endless Mode unlock?

Endless Mode unlocks after you clear Misty Forest on any difficulty. Its available maps still follow your campaign progress, so clearing the first region does not immediately open every Endless map.

What happens after the final boss?

After defeating the final boss, select More Levels! to continue into post-campaign stages. Each level increases overall difficulty by 15 percent, with enemy strength scaling through the waves rather than appearing as a full penalty at the start.

Do extra waves give experience or rewards?

No. The optional extra waves after a completed campaign stage are intended as a defense test. Enemy health and speed rise, gold drops gradually decrease, and the challenge ends if an enemy reaches the fire source, but the extra waves do not grant experience points or additional rewards.
