The answer before the background

Our recommendation

The four released campaign bosses are the Misty Forest’s Inferno Hydra, Bone Desert’s Steelrail Overlord, Frost Ruins’ Skeleton King and Sealed Citadel’s Grand Artificer. Each region ends in a dedicated boss level. Misty Forest tests your ability to rebuild while towers are threatened, Bone Desert uses a moving train and expanding carts, Frost Ruins adds a repeating trial choice, and Sealed Citadel revolves around Ancient Devices, enemy territory and powerful defensive structures. For all four, build a long route, keep a few towers near the Fire Source, set dedicated damage dealers to target the highest-health enemy, and do not spend every resource before the boss wave.

How regional boss levels work

Campaign progression is divided into regions, and every region has its own boss stage. The stage is a final test of the map mechanic you learned in that area, rather than a generic arena with a large enemy. The game also randomizes ordinary layouts, so the strongest preparation is a flexible defense instead of a single memorized maze.

Before entering the boss level, treat the preceding stage as a shopping and damage-planning opportunity. Keep enough gold for at least one important damage upgrade, retain a reliable answer to small enemies, and avoid filling your deck with towers that only work against one enemy type. Bosses are large targets, but the surrounding waves can still end a run if all your towers are set to attack the boss.

  • Build a long route with at least one late kill zone near the Fire Source.
  • Use the tower targeting controls: highest health is usually correct for boss damage, while most advanced is useful for enemies that threaten the flame first.
  • Keep some short-range or area damage for escorts and swarms.
  • Save Overcharge, Focus Fire or another character skill for the boss’s most dangerous movement window.
  • Expect difficulty to rise sharply on Heroic and with Infernal Shards; community clears are not a reliable measure of an ordinary run.

Verified versus uncertain

The boss names and core mechanics above are supported by official achievement text, patch notes and developer announcements. The game does not provide a public, authoritative boss loot table with fixed item drops or drop rates, so claims about guaranteed relics, exact gold or boss-specific equipment should be treated as unverified.

Counters for each boss

Inferno Hydra is the least complicated mechanically, but it punishes greedy construction. Reports describe the Misty Forest boss as a large fire elemental that burns down towers. The practical counter is redundancy: put your best long-range tower where it can keep firing, then use cheaper towers to maintain the path and replace anything lost. High attack speed fire towers can apply Burn, but Burn is less decisive against bosses than it once was because the effect was reduced in an earlier balance patch. Use it as extra damage, not as your entire plan.

Steelrail Overlord is a positioning fight. The boss travels on a train, and official patch notes confirm that pushing it back changes the layout of the new train rather than using one fixed combination. When a cannon or the encounter rule reveals another cart, treat that space as a new build phase. Place damage where the boss will spend the most time, then add coverage for the ordinary waves. Sniper, Laser and other long-range towers are especially practical because they remain useful as the train layout changes.

Skeleton King asks you to solve a decision problem every three turns. The official update replaced the old wind mechanic with the Trial of the Skeleton King, which presents five challenges and requires one choice. Do not commit every block to a visually perfect maze before the trial is known. Keep a few adaptable spaces and favor towers that remain useful when enemy routes or wave composition change. Area damage helps with supporting enemies, while one or two high-health-target towers should stay focused on the boss.

Grand Artificer is the most system-heavy encounter currently documented. The Sealed Citadel boss level contains Ancient Devices, and an achievement specifically asks you to link all of them before the end of round one. Another achievement challenges players to defeat the boss without activating Weather Simulators or allowing Ancient Towers to activate, proving that these systems are optional strategic elements rather than a single mandatory solution. For a normal clear, activate only the devices you can support. For a challenge clear, build an early maze on usable territory, keep long-range towers away from Ancient Defense Tower fire, and target the boss while dedicated crowd-control towers protect the route.

  • Use Burn, Chill, Fragile, Vulnerable or Charge when your build supports them, but confirm the tower tooltip because status effects and boss resistance can change.
  • Do not rely on global stun relics as a boss answer: official relic text states that some effects, including Antique Golden Bell’s stun, do not affect bosses.
  • If a boss is almost dead but the Fire Source is taking damage, retarget several towers to most advanced and finish the immediate threat instead of chasing theoretical maximum damage.
  • On Sealed Citadel, the Purification Potion Mixer helps on corruption-spreading levels, but the developer notes explicitly exclude the boss level from that machine’s appearance.

Enemy territory and the threats around the boss

Regional enemies are part of the boss test. Misty Forest introduces creatures such as spiders, wolves, bees and slimes, including enemies that can multiply or cause tower malfunctions. Bone Desert adds orcs, scorpions, sandworms and Magma Elementals. The latter can explode and disable towers on death, while sandworms can burrow after taking enough damage. These enemies make a pure boss-killing setup unsafe.

Bone Desert’s enemy territory forces you to build near the hostile area to expand your usable space. Lava tiles can make blocks unusable, healing totems can restore enemies, and bone structures restrict construction until removed or sold. In practice, expand deliberately: build the shortest safe bridge toward new territory, then use the new space for a kill zone rather than scattering towers across the map.

Sealed Citadel adds corruption, portals, Corrupt Elementals, Ancient Devices and Ancient Defense Towers. Recent patches reduced the corruption created by Corrupt Elementals and the Corrupted Altar, but the boss map remains a special case. The safest general counter is to separate jobs: let a few towers handle the boss, let area towers clear ordinary enemies, and use the maze to delay rather than directly fight every defensive structure.

  • Malfunction enemies: spread important towers apart and keep a replacement damage dealer available.
  • Burrowing enemies: add sustained damage and do not assume one opening volley will finish them.
  • Healing enemies: place burst damage or a kill zone outside the healing area when possible.
  • Exploding enemies: avoid clustering your whole damage package around one disposable tower.
  • Fast or rolling enemies: use slows, repeated passes and a late defense near the flame instead of one distant checkpoint.

What bosses unlock and what they drop

The game’s normal stage rewards are earned through the run, but no official public source lists a fixed boss-by-boss loot table or percentage chance for individual relics, towers or cards. Do not assume that every boss guarantees a named relic. The reliable rewards are progression-based: clearing regions records your completion, unlocks later content, and can unlock flames or characters tied to the region.

Official material confirms that clearing Sealed Citadel on Normal or higher unlocks Ancient Flame, while clearing it on Heroic unlocks Candle Flame. The train encounter also has a named reward: Arkflare Flame is obtained from the train engine after defeating Steelrail Overlord, although the current flame system and unlock wording have changed during development. The safest approach is to check the in-game unlock screen after a clear rather than relying on an old guide.

A separate mechanic matters for Sacred Flame runs. The developer states that corrupted levels provide both a relic and a block card, plus more Ember Stones in every corrupted level. That is a flame-related stage reward, not proof that the boss itself drops a guaranteed item.

  • Guaranteed or documented progression: region clear records, later region access and certain flame unlocks.
  • Documented conditional reward: Sacred Flame corrupted levels give a relic, a block card and additional Ember Stones.
  • Not publicly verified: exact boss gold, relic pools, drop rates, boss health scaling and whether every difficulty gives identical rewards.
  • After a clear, check the victory screen and Compendium because Early Access patches can change unlock presentation.

How long does a run take?

There is no reliable official average for how long it takes to beat the game or reach a boss. The developer has acknowledged that a full Roguelite or Endless run can take a long time because Emberward combines tower-defense waves with maze-building decisions. Your time will also vary with difficulty, pauses, route planning, retries and whether you continue after the final boss using the post-boss “More Levels!” option.

For a first clear, plan around learning rather than speed. A failed run still teaches which enemy reached the flame, which tower lost uptime, and whether the boss or the surrounding wave was the real problem. If you want faster attempts, use the game-speed controls, pause before construction decisions, and stop rebuilding a perfect maze once your late kill zone is already safe.

  • First attempts: expect the boss stage to take longer while you learn its special rule.
  • Repeat clears: speed improves mainly through quicker construction and fewer unnecessary upgrades.
  • Endless continuation: this is separate from simply defeating the regional boss and can extend a successful run substantially.

Common questions

How many regional bosses are currently in the game?

The current Early Access campaign has four released regions and one boss level for each: Misty Forest, Bone Desert, Frost Ruins and Sealed Citadel. The developer has discussed a fifth region for version 1.0, but it should not be treated as released campaign content until the game confirms it in the current build.

What is the best tower against bosses?

There is no universal best tower because the map rules and available cards change. Long-range single-target towers are the safest recommendation, especially when set to target the highest-health enemy. Add area damage for escorts, and keep at least one late tower near the Fire Source.

Can bosses be stunned?

Some boss-control effects are limited or ineffective. For example, the official text for Antique Golden Bell says its stun does not affect bosses. Treat slows, damage amplification and path control as more dependable than assuming every stun works.

What should I do against Bone Desert enemy territory?

Expand in short, deliberate steps. Build near the hostile territory to claim more space, remove or sell blocking bone structures when necessary, and avoid placing your entire defense where lava or a changing train layout can invalidate it. Once the boss is pushed back, immediately use the revealed cart for additional coverage.

Is there a fixed boss drop table?

No authoritative public table with exact boss drops or rates was found. Named progression rewards and flame unlocks are documented, but individual relic, tower, card and gold rewards can depend on the run, difficulty or current version. Check the victory screen and Compendium after each clear.
