Fast answer
The answer before the background
The best general route is a hybrid build: improve the Nail regularly, collect every major movement skill, and use Charms that increase SOUL generation, spell damage or attack speed. For a straightforward first run, use Longnail or Mark of Pride with Fragile or Unbreakable Strength, then add Quick Slash. For spell-heavy play, prioritize Shaman Stone, Spell Twister, Soul Catcher or Soul Eater, and upgraded spells. There are no formal classes or allocated stats; Masks, SOUL capacity, Nail strength and Charm Notches are the practical progression systems.
How builds work
Classes are player-made archetypes, not character selections
Hollow Knight does not ask you to choose a class such as warrior, mage or rogue. Every Knight can use the Nail, spells, Nail Arts, movement abilities and Charms. You can also change equipped Charms whenever you sit at a Bench, so most builds are flexible rather than permanent.
The most useful way to think about classes is as combat roles. A Nail build stays close to enemies and wins through repeated strikes. A spell build spends SOUL for powerful ranged or area attacks. A defensive build creates more healing opportunities or extra survivability. A mobility or utility build improves movement, exploration and resource gathering rather than maximizing boss damage.
- Nail class: sustained melee damage, easy SOUL generation and dependable performance against most enemies.
- Spell class: high burst damage, strong ranged attacks and excellent results when you can keep attacking safely.
- Defensive class: more health, faster healing or improved recovery for learning difficult encounters.
- Utility class: faster movement, longer reach, better map exploration or support effects from summoned allies.
| Build role | Primary strengths | Main weakness |
|---|---|---|
| Nail | Consistent damage and simple resource use | Requires close positioning |
| Spell | Burst damage, range and strong area coverage | Needs SOUL and good timing |
| Defensive | More room for mistakes and safer healing | Usually gives up damage |
| Hybrid | Works in exploration and boss fights | Rarely maximizes one specialty |
Use a hybrid setup until you know which attacks you naturally use. Specializing too early can leave you with Charms that are powerful in theory but uncomfortable for your movement and timing.
Progression systems
The stats that actually matter
The game has no strength, dexterity, intelligence or level-up screen. Instead, progression comes from a small group of permanent upgrades. Masks increase health, Vessel Fragments increase the amount of SOUL you can store, and Nail upgrades increase melee damage. Charm Notches determine how many passive effects you can equip.
SOUL is both a combat resource and a healing resource. Striking enemies with the Nail normally restores it, which is why Nail-focused players can still use spells regularly. Spells consume SOUL, while Focus spends SOUL to heal. This creates the central build decision: convert SOUL into immediate damage, or save it for recovery.
The Knight begins with five Masks and can reach nine through Mask Shards. Three Vessel Fragments increase maximum SOUL capacity by one additional unit of storage. Charm loadouts begin with three Notches and can reach eleven. These are verified progression limits, not attributes that can be redistributed.
- Prioritize movement abilities when a new route or boss arena is blocked by terrain.
- Upgrade the Nail consistently instead of waiting for a perfect build.
- Collect Mask Shards and Vessel Fragments if survivability or spell uptime is your problem.
- Treat Charm Notches as major power upgrades because they let a build combine effects.
- Do not overcharm casually: an overcharmed Knight takes double damage.
| Progression | What it improves | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Masks | Maximum health | Learning bosses and surviving mistakes |
| Vessel Fragments | Maximum SOUL storage | More spells or more healing between attacks |
| Nail upgrades | Damage per strike and Nail Arts | Reliable all-purpose combat |
| Charm Notches | Number of equipped Charms | Turning a basic kit into a focused build |
| Spell upgrades | Spell damage and effectiveness | Burst damage and difficult boss openings |
Movement abilities are not stats and do not occupy Charm Notches. They are permanent tools found during exploration, so they should be treated as route unlocks rather than loadout choices.
Build routes
Three practical routes from early game to endgame
A good route is more useful than a single fixed loadout because available Charms depend on exploration. The following paths describe priorities rather than mandatory orders. Substitute an equivalent Charm whenever you have not reached its location.
- First-playthrough hybrid: begin with Wayward Compass for exploration, then use Soul Catcher, Grubsong, Longnail or Gathering Swarm as needed. As more Notches become available, add Shaman Stone or Fragile Strength. Finish with a balanced combination such as Fragile or Unbreakable Strength, Shaman Stone, Quick Slash and a flexible one- or two-Notch Charm.
- Nail-focused route: improve the Nail whenever possible, then build around Fragile or Unbreakable Strength, Quick Slash, Mark of Pride or Longnail, and Steady Body if you dislike recoil. Nailmaster's Glory is a strong addition after learning all three Nail Arts. This route is best for players who prefer deliberate spacing and repeated strikes.
- Spell-focused route: obtain Vengeful Spirit early, then prioritize Shaman Stone and Spell Twister. Soul Catcher or Soul Eater helps maintain SOUL, while Quick Focus is useful when a boss gives short healing windows. Upgrade the projectile, downward and upward spells as they become available. This route is especially effective when enemies are vulnerable during predictable attack patterns.
- Defensive route: use Fragile or Unbreakable Heart, Quick Focus, Deep Focus or Hiveblood according to the encounter. Add Grubsong when taking occasional damage is unavoidable. This does not make the Knight invulnerable, but it gives you more time to learn patterns and recover from errors.
- Mobility and exploration route: use Sprintmaster, Dashmaster, Sharp Shadow or movement-friendly Charms when travelling through dangerous areas. This is less efficient for raw boss damage, but it can make platforming, backtracking and shadow-dash positioning much easier.
| Route | Core Charms to aim for | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Hybrid | Strength, Shaman Stone, Quick Slash, flexible utility | First run and mixed combat |
| Nail | Strength, Quick Slash, Mark of Pride, Nailmaster's Glory | Close-range damage |
| Spell | Shaman Stone, Spell Twister, Soul Catcher, Quick Focus | Burst damage and ranged attacks |
| Defensive | Heart, Quick Focus, Deep Focus, Hiveblood | Learning bosses |
| Mobility | Sharp Shadow, Sprintmaster, Dashmaster | Exploration and movement practice |
Charms can be swapped at Benches. Change the loadout before a boss, a platforming section or a resource-gathering trip instead of forcing one setup through every situation.
Skills and combat
Which abilities should you learn to use well?
Movement abilities are the foundation of every build. Mothwing Cloak provides the first dash, Mantis Claw enables wall-jumping, Crystal Heart enables long horizontal launches, Monarch Wings grants a second jump, and Shade Cloak allows a dash through enemies and attacks. Isma's Tear protects against acid and opens additional exploration routes.
Spells are equally important even for Nail specialists. Vengeful Spirit and its upgrade provide a reliable ranged option. Desolate Dive and Descending Dark add downward attacks and useful invulnerability. Howling Wraiths and Abyss Shriek punish enemies above the Knight and can produce exceptional burst damage when all hits connect.
Nail Arts are charged attacks taught by the Nailmasters. Great Slash, Dash Slash and Cyclone Slash reward players who can create distance or predict an opening. They are not required for a normal completion, but Nailmaster's Glory makes them much easier to integrate into a combat route.
The most important skill is SOUL discipline. Strike when safe, use spells when an opening is large enough to justify the cost, and heal only when the boss pattern gives you time. A build that matches your habits will outperform a theoretically stronger setup that leaves you unable to attack or recover.
- Learn to pogo by striking downward; it is useful for both combat and platforming.
- Use Shade Cloak defensively, not only as a damage tool.
- Practice casting downward spells during safe openings because they can protect the Knight while dealing damage.
- Keep one flexible Charm slot for the encounter rather than filling every Notch automatically.
FAQ
Common questions
What is the best build for a first playthrough?
A hybrid build is the safest choice. Combine one Nail damage Charm, one SOUL or spell Charm, and one defensive or utility Charm. This keeps melee reliable while preserving access to healing and ranged damage.
Is there a true mage or warrior class?
No. The Knight has one shared progression system, and any player can use every weapon, spell and movement ability. The terms mage, warrior and tank describe Charm loadouts rather than character classes.
Should I prioritize Nail upgrades or spells?
Prioritize both, but do not neglect the Nail. Nail strikes generate SOUL, so stronger melee attacks improve damage and help sustain spell casting and healing. Spell upgrades become especially valuable when bosses create safe ranged openings.
Which Charms are best overall?
There is no universal best set. Fragile or Unbreakable Strength, Quick Slash, Shaman Stone, Spell Twister, Mark of Pride, Quick Focus and Grubsong are consistently useful, but the best combination depends on whether you need damage, range, healing or movement.
Can I change a build after choosing it?
Yes. Charms can be equipped and removed at Benches, and permanent upgrades are shared by the Knight. You can switch from a spell loadout to a Nail loadout before a boss without starting a new save.
