The answer before the background

Our recommendation

The main roster includes the Knight, Hornet, the Hollow Knight, the Radiance, the Pale King, the White Lady, the three Dreamers, Quirrel, Elderbug, Cornifer, Iselda, Sly, the Nailsmith, the Seer, Zote, Tiso, Cloth, Bretta, Grimm and many other named bugs. The original game has one playable character: the Knight. You do not unlock alternate heroes. Instead, named characters appear as merchants, quest-givers, allies, lore figures or bosses, while progression comes from defeating enemies, finding abilities and completing story objectives. Hornet is female and becomes the playable lead in Silksong.

The important names in Hallownest

Hallownest’s cast is best understood by role rather than by a single character-selection roster. The Knight is the player-controlled Vessel, armed with a Nail and able to acquire spells, movement abilities, charms and Nail upgrades. The Knight has no official personal name and is genderless; “the Knight” is the safest name to use.

Hornet is the most prominent recurring figure. She is a female protector of Hallownest, fights with a needle and thread, and appears first as an opponent before becoming an important ally in the story. Her two original-game boss encounters are commonly identified as Hornet Protector in Greenpath and Hornet Sentinel in Kingdom’s Edge.

The Hollow Knight is the Vessel chosen to contain the Radiance. The Radiance is the infection’s central source and the hidden force behind the kingdom’s collapse. The Pale King, the White Lady and the three Dreamers—Monomon the Teacher, Lurien the Watcher and Herrah the Beast—explain much of the kingdom’s history and determine the route to the Black Egg.

  • Helpful travelers and recurring NPCs include Quirrel, Elderbug, Cornifer, Iselda, Sly, Bretta, Cloth, Tiso, the Last Stag, the Nailsmith, the Seer and the Hunter.
  • Other named figures include the Mantis Lords, Dung Defender, Soul Master, Traitor Lord, Grimm, the Godseeker, the Nailmasters and the White Defender.
  • Not every named figure is a conventional NPC. Some are bosses, dream warriors, merchants, quest characters or lore-only figures.

Naming note

The game uses titles and descriptive names extensively. “The Knight” and “the Hollow Knight” are different characters, while “Hornet Protector” and “Hornet Sentinel” are labels for two fights involving the same character.

Which characters and encounters unlock something?

You do not unlock characters as party members. The original game is a single-hero adventure, so the practical question is usually what a character encounter unlocks. Several named figures are tied directly to exploration or completion milestones.

To reach the main ending routes, defeat the three Dreamers and open the Temple of the Black Egg. Each Dreamer is found in a different region: Monomon in Teacher’s Archives, Lurien in the Watcher’s Spire and Herrah in Beast’s Den. The Dream Nail, obtained in the Resting Grounds, is required to interact with their seals.

Hornet’s first defeat in Greenpath is a major early story checkpoint. Her second defeat in Kingdom’s Edge grants access to the King’s Brand, which opens the route into the Abyss. The Abyss then contains important late-game movement and story progression, including the Shade Cloak and Void Heart route.

Optional characters also have useful progression chains. Rescue Sly in the Forgotten Crossroads to bring him to Dirtmouth as a shopkeeper. Find Cornifer in each region for maps, return to Iselda for map tools, and help the Nailsmith to improve the Nail. The Grimm Troupe quest introduces Grimmchild and later offers a choice involving the troupe’s conclusion.

Bosses are not normally recruitable. Defeating them may grant access, an item, a charm, a journal entry, a quest step or a new challenge. Godmaster adds rematches and Pantheons rather than new playable heroes.

  • For the basic story route, prioritize the Dream Nail, the three Dreamers and Hornet’s Kingdom’s Edge battle.
  • For exploration, seek movement abilities and the King’s Brand before attempting to complete the Abyss.
  • For optional content, investigate Grimm, Zote, Bretta, Cloth, the Colosseum of Fools and Godhome after establishing a strong charm and Nail setup.

Recommendation

If you are following the main story, do not treat every boss as mandatory. Many fights are optional, dream versions or DLC challenges. The Dreamers, Hornet’s second battle and the Black Egg are the most important named-character milestones.

Are these characters human, female or playable?

Hollow Knight does not present its cast as human characters. Hallownest is populated by bugs, insects, spiders, vessels and other strange beings. Some characters stand upright or wear clothing, but that does not make them human in the game’s setting. Fan art may redraw them as humans, but those designs are interpretations rather than the game’s canonical forms.

Hornet is the clearest answer to the female-character question: she is female, and the game consistently presents her as a princess-protector. Other characters are not always described with human gender terms. The Knight and Hollow Knight are genderless Vessels, so using “he” or “she” for either is not supported by the game’s established lore.

The original game has no alternate playable characters, co-op roster or character unlock menu. You always control the Knight. Hornet is playable in Silksong, which is a separate sequel set in Pharloom. Silksong’s official store description identifies her as its protagonist and describes her use of a Needle, tools and Silk-based abilities.

  • For a canon drawing reference, use the in-game sprites, official manual and official promotional art rather than fan-made human redesigns.
  • Treat “Hornet,” “Hornet Protector” and “Hornet Sentinel” as one character unless you are specifically discussing boss forms.
  • Do not confuse the playable Knight with the boss called the Hollow Knight.

Uncertainty and terminology

Some community pages use “character” broadly and include every boss, enemy, dream warrior and minor NPC. This guide uses the narrower, practical meaning: named story figures, merchants, allies, quest characters and major bosses.

Named bosses worth knowing

The boss roster is much larger than the central story cast. Main-game fights include False Knight, Gruz Mother, Hornet, Mantis Lords, Soul Master, Dung Defender, Broken Vessel, Watcher Knights, Uumuu, Nosk, Traitor Lord and the Hollow Knight. Optional or late-game fights include the Collector, Hive Knight, God Tamer, Troupe Master Grimm and the Radiance.

Dream and Godhome content adds alternate versions such as Failed Champion, Lost Kin, Soul Tyrant, White Defender, Nightmare King Grimm and Pure Vessel. These are usually rematches, dream battles or advanced challenges rather than separate story characters.

If you are making a checklist, record the character name and the form separately. For example, Hornet has two normal-game encounters, while Grimm and the Hollow Knight also have distinct later forms or related challenge versions. The commonly cited full boss count includes variations and DLC content, so totals can differ when sources use different counting rules.

  • Story-critical: the three Dreamers, Hornet Sentinel and the Hollow Knight route.
  • Optional but notable: Mantis Lords, Grimm, Hive Knight, Nosk, the Collector and the Colosseum fights.
  • Endgame challenge: Godhome, Pantheons, Pure Vessel and Absolute Radiance.
Counting warning

Boss totals vary because some lists include dream warriors, Godhome forms, Zote’s challenge and alternate versions while others count only first-time fights. Use individual names and locations when checking completion.

Common questions

Who is the main character in Hollow Knight?

The main character is the Knight, a silent, genderless Vessel controlled by the player. The Knight explores Hallownest, collects abilities and chooses actions that determine which ending becomes available.

Is Hornet the sister of the Knight?

Yes. Hornet and the Knight share the Pale King as a parent, making them siblings in the game’s lore. Hornet is not another playable character in the original game, but she is the protagonist of Silksong.

What is the difference between the Knight and the Hollow Knight?

The Knight is the player character and a discarded Vessel. The Hollow Knight is a different, larger Vessel selected to contain the Radiance and encountered as a major late-game boss.

Which characters should I find first?

Meet Elderbug and Cornifer early, rescue Sly when convenient, and follow Hornet’s trail through Greenpath. Later, find the Dream Nail, locate the three Dreamers and defeat Hornet in Kingdom’s Edge to obtain the King’s Brand.

Does Hollow Knight have a character list like a fighting game?

No. It has a large named cast, but most figures are NPCs, merchants, lore characters or enemies. There is one playable hero in the original game, with no character-select screen or recruitable party.
