The answer before the background

Our recommendation

The playable roster is built around avatars for Rog. The main choices are Knight Rog, Shopkeeper, Rogue, Duelist, Gunslinger, and Summoner. Later unlocks include Wide Rog, RogNGesus, Dog Rog, and Corrupted Rog; some players may also see Lag Rog or other cosmetic variants depending on their build and version. For a dependable first clear, use Knight Rog. Unlock Duelist by dying once, Summoner by defeating the C-rank Necromancer, Gunslinger by reaching eight weapons in one run, and Shopkeeper through its investment event. Secret avatars require special challenges, event outcomes, performance conditions, or an extreme Survival milestone.

Avatars are the game’s character classes

Rog is the persistent protagonist, while each selectable form is an avatar that changes starting bonuses, penalties, talents, weapon access, or other run rules. That means the roster is better understood as a set of build identities than as a party of separate story characters.

The same weapon pool can behave very differently depending on the avatar. A flexible character can use almost any coherent build, while specialists reward a narrower plan. Avatar-specific talents and cards are also part of the long-term progression, so an initially awkward character can become much stronger after more Soul Shop and card unlocks.

  • Use Knight Rog when learning maps, weapons, and bosses.
  • Use specialists after you understand their restrictions.
  • Check the avatar description before choosing equipment, because some items or cards are avatar-limited.

Verified versus recommended

The avatar effects and several unlock conditions are documented in developer patch notes. The role labels and suggested use cases are practical recommendations, not an official tier list.

What each avatar is good at

Knight Rog is the least demanding option. It does not force a narrow weapon route, so it is the best choice for a first clear, a blind challenge, or any run where the map and card offers are unpredictable.

Shopkeeper sacrifices experience gain for a much stronger economy and replaces normal level-up selection with a shop. It is powerful when you understand prices, rerolls, banishes, and route planning, but it is not the easiest beginner pick.

Rogue leans into speed. Treat it as a mobility specialist rather than a pure damage upgrade: movement helps with positioning, pickup routes, and escaping dense waves, but it does not remove the need for a complete damage plan.

Duelist is the glass-cannon option. Developer notes describe increased damage, very low health, negative or reduced defense, and Death’s Door, which can prevent a fatal hit when the required health condition is met. The 1.1.0 update adjusted her health, defense, and Death’s Door scaling, so older guides may overstate her fragility.

Gunslinger is the ranged specialist. It benefits from maintaining distance and building around gun access, but the eight-weapon unlock condition means you should use weapon-cap settings carefully. Summoner is the clearest crowd-control specialist: defeating the C-rank Necromancer unlocks unique weapons that summon enemies to fight for you.

  • First clear: Knight Rog.
  • Gold, shops, or card manipulation: Shopkeeper.
  • Movement and evasive play: Rogue.
  • Aggressive melee or high-risk damage: Duelist.
  • Boss damage from range: Gunslinger.
  • Safer screen control through minions: Summoner.

Patch caution

Balance is not static. The 1.1.0 patch specifically reworked Duelist, so use the current in-game stat panel over older tier lists.

How to unlock the main avatars

Most unlocks are tied to achievements or milestones rather than a separate character shop. After meeting a condition, return to the avatar selection screen and confirm that the new form has been added to the profile. If it is missing, check whether the achievement was completed on the intended profile and whether the run mode matched the requirement.

The following conditions are the clearest documented route for the core roster:

  • Duelist: Die once. The developer’s 0.9 patch notes list this as the unlock condition.
  • Summoner: Defeat the C-rank Necromancer.
  • Gunslinger: Possess eight weapons in one run. Community reports recommend checking the weapon-cap setting if the game stops offering weapons.
  • Shopkeeper: Complete the investment-related event route. Community documentation reports investing a cumulative 50,000 gold through the relevant event, but this condition is less clearly documented in official patch notes.
  • Rogue: Reach the required attack-speed achievement threshold. Community reports identify 999% attack speed as the target.
  • Wide Rog: Complete Plexus’s Sadism challenge, reported as an E-rank hard-mode challenge.
  • RogNGesus: Lose three gambling events in a row during the same visit or event chain, according to community documentation.

Why some guides disagree

Older guides were written before equipment, challenge, and achievement systems changed. If a condition fails, open the achievement or avatar tooltip in your current build instead of repeating an old numeric requirement blindly.

Secret avatars and unusual unlocks

Dog Rog and Corrupted Rog are the best-known secret avatars. Dog Rog is found during an E-rank Survival route by following a hidden skull-and-bone path near the starting area. Community testing suggests the timing and route are more reliable with the basic avatar, while the exact spawn behavior has not been maintained in an official guide.

Corrupted Rog is an endgame secret. The classic community route describes surviving until enemy health reaches infinity in Survival mode, followed by a secret ending sequence. Later patches changed numerical scaling and expanded the game’s precision, so treat the old multi-hour timing as an approximate description rather than a guaranteed stopwatch requirement.

Lag Rog is also reported by players as an avatar unlocked through an extreme performance condition, usually dropping below three frames per second. Because this is hardware-dependent and unpleasant to force, it is better treated as a novelty unlock than a normal progression target.

Gold Rog is a skin or variant rather than a separate gameplay class in the usual sense. The 0.9 notes tie the Gold Rog skin to completing True Snuffhead’s favourite. Wide Rog is likewise commonly described as a skin or avatar variant in older community discussions, so the menu label in your build is the final authority.

  • Attempt Dog Rog only after unlocking E-rank Survival and improving movement speed.
  • Leave Corrupted Rog for late progression, when you have the cards, equipment, and performance settings to survive long runs.
  • Do not confuse skins with full gameplay avatars; compare the stat panel and card restrictions.

What is not fully verified

The game’s official patch notes confirm several avatars and major systems, but they do not provide one complete, current secret-character checklist. Names and conditions marked as community-supported should be checked against the in-game encyclopedia and achievements.

Choosing an avatar for Rog’s Mode and Survivors Mode

Rog’s Mode rewards route planning, shops, chests, blacksmiths, and adapting across several stages. Knight Rog is the safest all-purpose choice because it can use whatever weapon path appears. Shopkeeper becomes more attractive when your route supplies enough gold and you are comfortable converting money into controlled upgrades.

Survivors Mode is more about arena control and sustained scaling. Summoner is a practical learning pick because summoned units can help occupy the screen, while Knight Rog remains the most forgiving when enemy patterns or card offers go badly. Gunslinger can excel in open space, but it is less comfortable when enemies close in quickly.

For challenges, choose the avatar that supports the rule rather than the one with the highest general reputation. Duelist can be excellent for damage checks, Rogue for movement objectives, and Shopkeeper for economy or shop requirements. These are recommendations, not guarantees; your Soul Shop, equipment, card pool, and challenge level matter just as much.

  • For a first Rog’s Mode clear, start with Knight Rog.
  • For learning Survivors Mode, try Knight Rog or Summoner.
  • For a gold objective, use Shopkeeper after learning its economy loop.
  • For a challenge with strict weapon or movement rules, read the avatar’s restrictions first.

Practical rule

A coherent build on a flexible avatar is usually better than forcing a specialist into a build that does not match its starting rules.

Common questions

What is the best character for beginners?

Knight Rog is the safest recommendation. It has the fewest build restrictions and can use almost any sensible weapon combination. Summoner is another good learning option once unlocked, especially when crowded arenas are the main problem.

How do I unlock Duelist?

Die once. The developer’s 0.9 patch notes list the first death as Duelist’s unlock condition. The avatar was rebalanced in the 1.1.0 update, so use the current stat panel rather than an older guide.

How do I unlock Summoner?

Defeat the C-rank Necromancer. The developer notes state that Summoner then gains access to unique weapons that summon enemies to fight for you.

Is there a hero mode in this game?

Players sometimes use “hero mode” to refer to avatar-based play, but the game’s own terminology is avatar, Rog’s Mode, and Survivors Mode. Choose the mode first, then select an avatar whose restrictions fit the run.

Are Dog Rog and Corrupted Rog real secret characters?

Yes, they are widely documented secret avatars. Dog Rog is associated with a hidden E-rank Survival bone route, while Corrupted Rog is tied to an extreme Survival milestone and secret ending. Both conditions come mainly from community testing and may be affected by later patches.
