Unlock requirements and balance details can change while the game is in Early Access. Where the developer has not published an exact threshold, this guide labels the information as reported rather than definitive.

The answer before the background

Our recommendation

The current roster is Avoron, Merris, Nixi, Kront, Skadi, Lorien and Leaf. Avoron is unlocked from the start. Keep completing runs to unlock the remaining heroes; the exact thresholds are not clearly documented by the developer and can change between updates. After a hero appears at the hub, interact with the campfire to switch to that character. Each hero has a different weapon, armor profile, starting attack and talent tree, so character choice changes how a run develops. Character achievements no longer function as the old perk-unlock system in the current progression model; talents are developed through the Constellarium instead.

All playable heroes and their practical roles

The seven heroes are not simple cosmetic alternatives. Their weapons, armor restrictions, starting attacks and talent trees push them toward different builds. The role descriptions below are practical starting points, not rigid class rules: blessings, talents and equipment can move a hero into a very different build.

Avoron is the Knight and the default hero. His sword-and-shield style is a forgiving melee starting point, with better durability than the lighter heroes. He is a sensible choice while learning enemy patterns, boss timings and movement.

Merris is the Sorceress. She fights at range and naturally favors Cast blessings, summons and experience-collection tools. Her lower durability makes positioning and defensive gear more important than simply stacking damage.

Nixi is the Assassin. She is a mobile light-armored attacker who benefits from fast attacks, critical hits, Luck and evasive movement. She can be fragile when surrounded, but her speed helps her avoid contact.

Kront is the Barbarian. He is a heavy melee bruiser built to stay close to enemies and turn strong attacks into large bursts of damage. His durability makes him a useful alternative when ranged or evasive play is not working.

Skadi is the Warrior. She is a flexible, medium-armored hero who can be developed toward direct attacks, durability or summon-supported play. She is less specialized than some of the roster, which makes her useful for experimenting.

Lorien is the Ranger. The developer describes him as a light-armored bow user focused on mobility and speed, with rapid arrows and long-range shots that can seek enemies. He is a strong choice for players who want to keep distance while maintaining constant pressure.

Leaf is the Druid introduced with Act III. Her identity is shapeshifting: the Act III release describes a hero who can transform into different forms, while current achievements reference Bear and Panther forms. Treat her as a form-changing melee specialist rather than a conventional ranged character.

Why some older lists say six

The Steam store description still contains older Early Access wording that lists six characters. Act III officially added the Druid, and the current achievement list includes Leaf-specific achievements, so current guides should count seven released heroes.

How to unlock the roster

Avoron is available immediately. For the original progression, continue playing runs and the next hero will eventually appear at the hub. Older guides often describe the order as Merris after Avoron, Nixi after Merris, Kront after Nixi and Skadi after Kront. Later reports describe the system more generally as accumulated time spent in runs, so do not assume that every unlock requires winning with the immediately preceding hero.

The reliable method is simple: start another run, survive or fight for as long as you can, return to the hub and check whether a new hero has appeared. Time spent navigating menus or standing at camp does not reliably advance the run-time requirement. You do not need a special code, paid DLC or a character-specific item.

Lorien was added with Act II and follows the same general progression model in current player reports. Leaf arrived with Act III. A community reference lists Leaf at roughly 1 hour and 40 minutes spent in Death’s Realm across runs, but the developer has not published that number as a guaranteed threshold. Treat it as an estimate, not a promise.

If an unlock does not appear immediately, complete another short run rather than repeatedly restarting from the hub. Save changes, updates and progression states can also affect when the newly unlocked hero is placed at the campfire.

  • Verified starting point: Avoron is the default hero.
  • Reported progression order: Merris, Nixi, Kront, Skadi, then Lorien.
  • Act III addition: Leaf, the Druid.
  • Not verified as a fixed rule: exact run counts or exact universal minute thresholds for every hero.
Fastest practical route

Play normally, keep runs moving and use each newly available hero at least once. This lets you confirm the unlock, view the hero’s weapon and inspect the talent tree without relying on an old threshold that may no longer match the current build.

How to change or switch characters

You cannot swap heroes in the middle of an active run. Return to the hub, then interact with the campfire near the starting area. The character-selection screen shows the heroes you have unlocked; choose one and confirm before entering the next run.

The campfire is also the best place to compare starting attacks, equipment restrictions and talent progress. If a hero is missing from the selection screen, that character has not yet been added to your current progression state. Finish another run and check again.

Changing heroes does not erase the gear, achievements or talent progress associated with the previous hero. It only changes which character begins the next attempt. Shared and character-limited equipment rules can still affect what appears as usable.

  • Finish or abandon the current run and return to the hub.
  • Interact with the campfire.
  • Select an unlocked hero.
  • Check the loadout and talent tree before starting.
Controller players

The exact button prompt depends on your control scheme. If the campfire does not respond, move close to it and use the interact prompt rather than the general character-movement controls.

Character achievements, perks, talents and slots

Older guides may call character-specific bonuses Signs or perks. In the current system, the old achievement-based perk structure was reworked into personalized talent trees. The developer’s Act II update added a talent tree for each hero, and the current hub uses the Constellarium to spend character progression resources.

Character achievements still matter for completion goals and for checking how a hero is intended to be played. The current achievement list includes examples such as Merris wins with specific talents, Lorien wins using bow-focused talents and Leaf wins using different forms. They should not be read as the main way to unlock a hero’s modern talent tree.

Character slots usually refers to the limited blessing categories available during a run, not the number of heroes you can own. Those categories can shape whether another Strike, Cast, Power, Summon or Dash blessing is offered. Talents, equipment and special effects can modify available slots, so inspect the hero’s current run panel instead of relying on a universal slot count.

The developers have announced a future overhaul that removes the existing god-blessing slot separation, but that announcement concerns work in progress. Do not apply that planned system to the current Act III character guide until the overhaul is released.

  • Achievements are useful goals and references for playstyle.
  • Talent trees are the current character-perk system.
  • Character slots and inventory or stash slots are separate systems.
  • Future Act IV changes may alter blessing slots and active skills.
Recommendation

Spend early talent resources on survivability or the part of the hero you actually use. A talent that supports your chosen attack, Cast, summon or form is usually more valuable than copying an achievement build before you understand its requirements.

Which hero should you use first?

Choose Avoron if you are learning the game and want a sturdy melee baseline. Choose Merris if you prefer distance, Casts or summons. Choose Nixi if you enjoy speed and high-risk critical attacks. Choose Kront when you want to stand your ground and trade hits. Skadi is a good experimental platform because her kit can support several directions.

Lorien is the clearest ranged bow specialist, while Leaf is the most mechanically distinct because her forms change how she approaches combat. Neither is required for basic progression, and there is no single best hero for every act, difficulty or build. Your gear quality, talent investment and familiarity with the hero often matter more than a simple tier ranking.

  • Best learning pick: Avoron.
  • Best ranged learning pick: Merris.
  • Best dedicated bow pick: Lorien.
  • Most unusual kit: Leaf.
  • Best general advice: choose the hero whose attack pattern you can position safely.

Common questions

How many playable characters are in Death Must Die?

The current Act III roster has seven playable heroes: Avoron, Merris, Nixi, Kront, Skadi, Lorien and Leaf. Older store text and guides may say six because they predate Leaf’s release.

How do I unlock characters?

Start with Avoron and keep completing runs. The remaining heroes unlock through progression in Death’s Realm, generally through accumulated run time. Exact thresholds are not officially documented as fixed values, so treat published minute counts as estimates.

How do I switch characters?

Return to the hub and interact with the campfire. Select any hero you have unlocked, then begin a new run. Character switching is not available during an active attempt.

Do character achievements unlock perks?

Not in the old sense. Character achievements remain completion objectives and playstyle challenges, while the current system uses a separate talent tree for each hero. Spend character progression resources through the Constellarium.

What are character slots?

They are usually blessing-category limits during a run, such as slots for Strikes, Casts, Summons or Dashes. They are separate from hero slots, inventory space and stash tabs, and their effects can be changed by talents, gear or future updates.
