Fast answer
The answer before the background
Diablo 4 aspects and stats matter only when their conditions align with the active damage and defense loop. Start by reading the current tooltip: identify whether an effect is additive or multiplicative, which skill tag or damage type it modifies, what state must be active and whether bosses can satisfy that condition. Fortify, Barrier, Armor, Resistances and Damage Reduction are different layers; Overpower, Critical Strike and damage-over-time scaling are different offensive routes. Do not add every attractive mechanic. Choose the few states the build can maintain, then test one changed Aspect or affix against the same activity.

Translate the tooltip into trigger, effect, uptime and target
| Field | Question | Example of a hidden failure |
|---|---|---|
| Trigger | What action or state turns it on? | The build rarely applies the required control effect. |
| Effect | Which damage, defense or resource changes? | The number affects another skill tag. |
| Uptime | How often and how long is it active? | A short boss window is treated as permanent. |
| Target | Does it apply to bosses or Unstoppable enemies? | Taunt or control assumptions fail on bosses. |
| Stacking | Is the bonus additive, multiplicative or capped? | Several large-looking bonuses share one bucket. |
| Version | Did the wording change? | A 2.x guide describes a removed passive or old Aspect. |
Defense
Survival is a stack of different answers
Armor and Resistances reduce different incoming damage. Maximum Life increases the size of several other effects. Barrier absorbs damage while present. Fortify is a state used by class and item interactions; it is not a substitute word for every defensive bonus. Control removal or Unstoppable can be decisive even when the character sheet looks strong.
When a character dies, classify the event: one hit, sustained damage, missing resistance, crowd control, resource starvation or poor position. Improve the layer connected to the cause. Adding generic damage reduction without checking its condition may leave the same failure untouched.
Offense
Build around one repeatable relationship
Overpower builds need the events, health or Fortify relationships that make Overpower occur and scale. Critical builds need reliable chance and a skill that benefits. Damage-over-time setups care about duration, application and compatible multipliers. Class-specific terms such as Ferocity, Resolve, Dominance or Vampiric Curse must be read in the class or item context that created them.
The 3.0 redesign moved or changed many passive, Aspect and skill-tree relationships. When two guides conflict, prefer the live skill tree and current patch notes. Use a training target or repeatable encounter, keep the same difficulty and change one Aspect, affix or variant at a time.
FAQ
Common questions
What is the difference between an Aspect and an affix?
An Aspect is a Legendary power relationship; affixes are item stats. Both must match the build and current patch.
Is Fortify the same as Barrier?
No. They are separate states with different rules and interactions.
Does crowd control work on bosses?
Bosses use stagger and special immunity rules; do not assume every control-triggered effect works identically.
Why did an old Aspect guide stop working?
The 3.0 redesign and later patches changed skill, passive, Aspect and item relationships.
