Fast answer
The answer before the background
Diablo 4 Paladin is a Lord of Hatred class built around martial skills, holy power, sword-and-shield identity and Oaths that change how a setup functions. Start with a leveling route that can attack continuously and survive close range. Choose an Oath only after identifying what it adds to the damage engine: Judicator-related setups care about Judgement, while Zealot wording supports a different repeated-attack plan. Add a movement or engagement skill, a dependable defensive button and enough resource support before chasing a complete Talisman set. Paladin-specific Uniques and set Charms can finish a build, but they should not be listed as mandatory for the first fifty levels unless the guide provides a real substitute.
Access
The Paladin is expansion-owned, not a base-game unlock
Blizzard introduced the Paladin with Lord of Hatred. The class was offered through expansion access and is now part of the released expansion product. Owning only the base game or Vessel of Hatred does not turn a Paladin build link into a selectable class. Check the license on the same Battle.net account used by the platform.
Patch notes divide expansion, base-game and class fixes. That separation matters: a permanent system change may apply to every character, while an Oath, skill or Paladin Unique remains tied to Lord of Hatred.
Build plan
Pick one Oath and one damage rhythm
| Question | Healthy answer | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| How does the build deal damage? | Named skill or Judgement/Zeal interaction | Several unrelated high-rank skills. |
| How does it enter or leave danger? | A movement skill with a planned purpose | All mobility consumed for damage. |
| How does it survive? | Shield, armor/resistance, block or timed defense | Only conditional damage reduction. |
| What does the Oath change? | A documented interaction used by the build | Chosen because a tier list says S. |
| Which item is required? | One effect that enables the loop, plus a fallback | A full Mythic and Talisman package before leveling. |
Current notes
Read the live tooltip before copying launch-week numbers
The 3.1 line has adjusted Paladin skills and Oaths after the expansion launch. Official notes have changed damage, cooldowns, stack limits and wording. A Judicator, Zealot, Blessed Shield or Heaven's Fury recommendation must therefore name its patch instead of presenting a number as permanent.
For leveling, prioritize a smooth rotation and broad damage. For higher Torment or bosses, measure uptime and survival against the actual encounter. If the build fails, determine whether the Oath condition, resource, weapon setup, Talisman pieces or defensive layer is missing before swapping every skill.
FAQ
Common questions
Is Paladin free in Diablo IV?
No. It is a class included with Lord of Hatred.
Which Paladin Oath is best?
There is no universal answer; the Oath must reinforce the selected skill loop and target activity on the current patch.
Can I level with an endgame Paladin build?
Use its leveling variant only if it works without the final Unique, Mythic and Talisman requirements.
Why does my Judgement build differ from an old guide?
Paladin skills and Oaths received post-launch changes; compare the guide's patch with the installed tooltip.
