The answer before the background

Our recommendation

If you want a campaign-focused castle game with scripted enemy attacks, improved presentation, new missions, and modern Steam features, Stronghold: Definitive Edition is the better version of the first game. If you specifically want to build an economy, recruit an army, and fight several computer-controlled lords on repeatable maps, do not buy it for that purpose. It has no traditional skirmish mode, and Firefly has stated that there are no plans to add one. Choose Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition for the closest Stronghold-style AI sandbox, or Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition for a broader competitive RTS with extensive AI, campaigns, multiplayer, and civilization variety.

There is no skirmish AI mode

The most important answer is simple: this edition does not let you start a standard skirmish match against AI lords. You cannot place several computer opponents on a map, watch them expand their castles, and attack them in the same way you can in Crusader or Age of Empires II.

The original Stronghold was designed around campaigns, castle sieges, economic missions, and defensive scenarios. The remaster preserves that structure rather than importing Crusader’s skirmish system. Firefly’s published FAQ explains that adding the mode would require backporting code and features from Crusader, and the developer later confirmed that there were no plans to add it.

AI is still present, but it is scenario-driven. Enemy forces may attack during a campaign mission, and castles can be defended or assaulted in dedicated scenarios. That is very different from an AI lord managing an independent economy and making its own strategic decisions throughout a sandbox match.

  • Best for: campaign missions, castle design, siege objectives, and historical scenarios.
  • Not best for: endless AI skirmishes, bot-filled multiplayer, or emergent lord-versus-lord battles.
  • Important distinction: scripted campaign attacks are not the same as skirmish AI.
If you want to...Choose...Why
Play the original story in a modern presentationStronghold: Definitive EditionIt keeps the campaign structure while adding new content and quality-of-life changes.
Fight computer-controlled castle lords repeatedlyStronghold Crusader: Definitive EditionIt is built around skirmish-style opponents, larger battles, and replayable AI encounters.
Play a large competitive historical RTSAge of Empires II: Definitive EditionIt offers many civilizations, campaigns, AI matches, editor tools, and cross-platform multiplayer.
Verified limitation

The Steam store page lists single-player and online PvP, but not skirmish or AI co-op. Firefly’s own FAQ and later developer replies explicitly state that the mode is not included and was not planned.

Definitive Edition versus HD and the original

Stronghold HD is essentially the original game presented with higher-resolution support and the older release structure. It remains a valid choice if you want the least expensive way to play the classic campaign and do not care about the remaster’s additional content or modern Steam features.

The Definitive Edition is a substantial upgrade rather than a completely different strategy game. It includes the two classic campaigns across 26 missions, a new 14-mission narrative campaign, and a 10-mission Castle Trail. It also adds remade artwork, improved animation, modernized controls, higher unit and building limits, extra zoom, rally points, updated audio, Workshop support, achievements, and Steam multiplayer for up to eight players.

The key point for AI-focused buyers is that the remaster improves the original’s presentation and mission package without changing its fundamental campaign-first identity. It does not turn the first Stronghold into Crusader.

  • Choose HD if price, nostalgia, and the original campaign are your main concerns.
  • Choose the Definitive Edition if you want new missions, Workshop maps, improved controls, updated visuals, and easier Steam multiplayer.
  • Do not choose either version expecting a full skirmish ladder against independent AI lords.

Save compatibility

The official manual states that save games from the original Stronghold and Stronghold HD can be loaded in the Definitive Edition, although you should still keep backups before migrating important saves.

Crusader and Age of Empires II are better for repeatable AI games

Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition is the natural alternative if the missing AI mode is a deal-breaker. Its design is centered on skirmish encounters against distinct lords, and the current edition adds new units, additional AI lords, new campaigns, larger maps, cooperative content, Workshop support, and expanded multiplayer options. It offers the sandbox loop many players expect when they ask for a Stronghold game against AI.

The trade-off is that Crusader is more combat-oriented and less guided than the first Stronghold. Its desert setting, aggressive lord matchups, and open-ended battles can be excellent for replayability, but newcomers may find the original game’s story campaigns easier to follow.

Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition is the stronger choice if you want a broad RTS rather than a focused castle simulator. It has many civilizations, extensive campaign content, online and LAN options, cooperative play, an editor, mods, cross-platform multiplayer, and regular ongoing support. Its economy and army systems are more expansive, but its castle-building is less central to the experience.

  • Pick Crusader: Definitive Edition for classic Stronghold-style AI lords and siege sandbox play.
  • Pick Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition for competitive depth, faction variety, and a larger multiplayer ecosystem.
  • Stay with the first game if atmosphere, campaign pacing, and castle defense matter more than replayable AI battles.

Recommendation

If you are buying only one game and the phrase “against AI” means sandbox skirmishes, choose Crusader: Definitive Edition rather than the first game’s remaster.

Use these checks before you choose

Use the following process to avoid buying the wrong version for your preferred play style.

  • Open the game mode list and ask whether you want authored missions or repeatable sandbox battles. The first game is strongest in authored missions.
  • If you want an AI lord to gather resources, expand, build a castle, and attack on its own timetable, remove the first game from your shortlist.
  • If you mainly want the original campaign with cleaner visuals, modern controls, and extra missions, the Definitive Edition is the recommended purchase.
  • If you want to play with friends, confirm whether you need cooperative AI, competitive PvP, or simple shared campaign play. The store listing confirms online PvP, but it does not advertise AI-filled multiplayer matches.
  • If you already own HD, upgrade only if the new campaigns, Workshop features, visuals, and multiplayer improvements justify the purchase for you.
  • Check that your copy is updated. Version 1.34 is the current release identified in Firefly’s March 17, 2026 update announcement.

Common questions

Does Stronghold: Definitive Edition have AI opponents?

It has scripted enemy forces and AI siege attacks in its missions, but it does not have traditional skirmish AI lords that build economies and castles independently.

Can you play against bots in multiplayer?

The official feature listings confirm online PvP, but they do not list bot-filled multiplayer. Firefly’s FAQ also confirms that the game does not include a skirmish mode, so you should not buy it expecting multiplayer matches with AI slots.

Is Stronghold HD better than the Definitive Edition?

HD is preferable only if you want the older, cheaper campaign experience. The Definitive Edition is the better all-round purchase because it adds new campaigns, Castle Trail missions, improved visuals, modern controls, Workshop support, and Steam multiplayer.

Is Crusader: Definitive Edition better for AI battles?

Yes. It is the better choice for repeatable battles against computer-controlled lords, larger maps, and a more combat-focused sandbox. The first game is better suited to structured campaigns and defensive castle scenarios.

Is Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition a better alternative?

It is better if you want a deeper general-purpose RTS with many civilizations, extensive campaigns, competitive multiplayer, cooperative play, an editor, and cross-platform support. It is less focused on the detailed castle economy that defines Stronghold.
