The answer before the background

Our recommendation

Diablo 4 is officially available on Windows PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. The PC edition is sold through Battle.net and Steam; the current Steam listing requires a Battle.net account, broadband internet and about 90 GB of available storage. Cross-play and cross-progression use the linked Battle.net account, while local couch co-op is a console feature. Diablo IV is always online and does not provide an official offline mode. We did not verify a native Android, iPhone, iPad, Nintendo Switch or macOS edition. A cloud, handheld-PC or compatibility-layer route should not be mislabeled as a native port, and buying the game on one platform should not be assumed to grant the commercial license on every other storefront.

Account progress can travel while product ownership may not

Blizzard describes cross-play and cross-progression through Battle.net. Link the intended console or PC identity to the correct Battle.net account before creating long-term characters. Account-link changes can have restrictions, so verify the support instructions instead of repeatedly unlinking platforms.

Cross-progression does not mean every storefront automatically recognizes a purchase made elsewhere. Confirm the base game, Vessel of Hatred and Lord of Hatred licenses on the platform being used. A class can appear unavailable because its expansion license is absent even when the same Battle.net profile owns it on another platform.

Plan for an online service even when playing alone

Diablo IV requires an internet connection and service authentication for solo play. There is no supported offline-save conversion or official LAN-only mode. During maintenance or a service incident, local troubleshooting cannot make the world service available.

Online co-op and cross-platform groups are different from couch co-op. Console couch co-op lets two players share a local screen under the console rules, while PC does not gain couch co-op merely by connecting two controllers. Check the current platform page for subscription requirements and player limits before purchasing for a household.
